I need to come here more often! This place is wonderful! Fun atmosphere with amazing food(I had food envy of the chili), great/helpful staff, drinks for days. Did I mention an awesome atmosphere?

Nice implementation of the fancy open-faced toast concept. Great for sharing.

I really wasn’t impressed at all by anything in Toast. The food looked like something I whip up when I’m basically out of groceries, and the drinks were mediocre. I won’t be going back, unless everyone else is(and then I will follow them off the cliff we’re all jumping from). It is really teeny, so if there are a lot of people, expect to be squished. The only thing I liked was the bathroom– disco ball, and classical music. I wanted to stay there the whole time I was at Toast!

Got three toasts for three people after hitting up the handsome biscuit. Really full great toast and a great idea

What a cute concept! The toast slices are relatively small, yet about an inch thick! I had the SMK Salmon, which came with smoked salmon, a minimal amount of cream cheese and«everything» spice — the type you’d find on an «everythjng» bagel. It was delicious but would have been better topped with red onion. Others at the table ordered the Hot Chix, Eggy Weggy, Tres Leches and pizza toast, the latter two of which I sampled. The pizza toast was cheesy and delicious, and the Tres Leches made for a wonderfully sweet end to the meal. I’d recommend ordering two to three varieties to try. I’d definitely come back!

Toast is an awesome place for any meal. There are some with soft poached eggs, for a more breakfast feel. or you can go for a hearty lunch/dinner with a Hot Chix or the Curry byrd. The hot Chix is a combination between sweet and spicy. The spice is not over whelming, it starts out with a sweet touch and then a tiny kick at the end(more like a buffalo sauce kick) They give you a steak knife to eat your toast. The first time I went i was very confused. Why would i need this steak knife? but when the toast came. i understood. youll need it to cut through that thick piece of toast and to get around all of the chicken! The curry byrd is also a favorite of mine. Chicken curry and they add a sweetness to it with some jam. It is so savory, be sure to prepare yourself for a nap after eating at TOAST. For dessert I tried the Tres leches toast. it is so good. Condensed milk and brown sugar! And as a dessert it’s very affordable. It’s about $ 4? I recommend that this be shared between 2 – 4 people especially if you just ate an entire toast beforehand. I think the prices are very reasonable at TOAST and I take my friends from out of town here and they love it. You can add a poached egg or bacon if you would like to any toast, although i dont think you need to add any as most of their food is hearty is it is. They have their own parking lot which is very convenient and lots of places to sit. indoor and outdoor The only downside is that I wake up super early on the weekends, and Toast doesn’t open until 10 am, which I understand because on Fri/Sat they stay open very late.

I am so impressed with toast Resturant! After waiting for months to go. It was so worth the wait. We ordered the taco pig and the hot chix. 1.) taco pig 4.0÷5 could’ve used sauce on the carnitas(but then again I like my food saucy) so it was ok but nothing to take it over the top 2.) the hot chix 5÷5− AMAZING! I read the ingredients but I honestly couldn’t tell you what was in it just that it was perfectly spicy and sweet! Goodness on a plate Most of the items on the menu are 6.00 or less. So it’s worth a try just because of the price.

I honestly do not know if it’s the food, the drinks or the atmosphere that keeps me coming back to this place. Oh what am I saying! It’s all of that! And then some! So the concept of a restaurant primarily serving up just plain toasts seemed a little ridiculous at first. But trust me when I say that this place is worth the hype. Plus theres a party in the bathroom. What other place has that? Tell me. The toasts are made in house, so they’re not your regular skinny bread from the store thats just toasted and then tossed a bunch of stuff on top. The toasts are plentiful! The mountain of toppings also helps with the fullness of the entrée portions. We usually just come here for a few drinks. They are a little on the smaller side of things and the price point doesn’t really justify the tiny glass, but they do taste great! Honestly, that’s my only qualm with this place. The price of those darn tiny drinks. Patio up front with awesome string lights and an even more awesome space at the back! Complete with a fire pit. Getting back there is a little awkward though. You’d literally have to walk across their kitchen to reach the back door. Hipster, chill place. You’ll find lots of trendy people conversing over drinks and toasts.

Oh man. I am so sad to write a 3 star review for this place, I had such high hopes!!! What a letdown. First of all, nothing was«wrong» per se, but it was not enjoyable for me. So, I realize this place is called«toast,» yes, so I expect my bread to be toasted. But the bread was so thickly sliced and so HARD that I literally cut my mouth in a couple spots just by eating! I didn’t understand why it had to be toasted for so long, it was a painful experience(in more than one way). Also, I got the avocado/lettuce/bacon/egg toast… The bacon was sparse, and I still am wondering where the avocado was? What was good was the egg yolk, they had cooked it perfectly to where it wasn’t hard but not runny at all, I appreciated that. But it was not what I expected that’s for sure. The flavor was simply«okay,» and definitely not worth 6 or 7 bucks. The 3 stars are there because the service was great, the location and atmosphere of the place was way cool, and they have a very specific and well-themed menu. Unfortunately, my mouth has a couple raw spots from the food, so I won’t be coming back. So much for my high hopes :(

You haven’t had toast until you’ve had it at TOAST! I love this place; it gets a 4.75 rating from me! :) They bake their bread in-house; and each slice is thick and toasted to perfection! The first time we dined here, we didn’t know what to expect, so we each ordered two pieces of toast! One savory and one dessert each. We definitely could have just shared one of the dessert pieces. The selections vary — there is the«Taco Pig» — think«fancy» pulled pork, the«Curry Byrd» — Chicken, Yellow Curry butter & warm berry jam(I think I will try this next time,) «Hot Chix» — Confit Chicken with honey butter & buttermilk Lupo, an «Egg Salad» one, Tuna Melt, SMK Salmon(a must for Lox lovers — Nova Lox, Caper Butter, Krem Fresh & everything spice, and those are just to name some of the savory toasts. The ones I’ve tried are the SMK Salmon — delicious, just delicious. I’ve also tried the Eggy Weg and added bacon. The description: «Soft boiled egg with smoked cheddar & chili lime oil.» The bacon in addition to the soft boiled egg? Uhhh-maze-ing. When my knife hit the yolk and oozed all over the bread and touched my bacon? I took a bite & I can’t even. lol.(I hope this makes you come to Toast right away.) For dessert, there are 3 choices — Tres Leches, Simple Toast — you choose white, wheat, or Brioche, choose a spread(i.e.: honey, vanilla, etc.) & choose a topping such as cinnamon sugar, chocolate chips, and a few others. I’ve had the Tres Leches & it was ok, but our favorite — the Churro toast! We also added the«Malt Chocolate ice cream» & that just made the whole experience divine. You can also add-on to the toast. Bacon, soft boiled egg, caviar, malt chocolate ice cream(for dessert toasts, or not, if you’re into that kinda thing.) As you can tell, it there are lots of ways to customize your order. They also offer small plates, chili, and Pizza Toast, which I’ve yet to try because it’s only available after 5pm for now. There is a bar in the middle, and there is also a good(and different) drink menu — they serve Nitro coffee, bulletproof coffee, a Frappé(I ordered this today thinking it would be a Frappuccino type of drink, but it is actually an iced Latte. Very good though.) My bf had a…***drumroll*** Nutella Cream Soda! What?! I don’t know how they made it, but it was good! You can’t get that anywhere else. The eclectic décor is awesome — there are a few booths inside with funky and cool patterns on the table; they make for great Instagram pics ;) and there is a table with chairs that are actual tree trunks turned into seats!(not the comfiest, but they look cool.) You can also sit at the bar, and when it’s warmer, there are some tables outside as well! You can see some of the kitchen action as well, through the big arch. There is no door. I also love how there are some books stacked up with a shelf to create more eating space. My biggest surprise came today, as I needed to use the facilities; it’s party in there, literally! I opened the door, and BAM– a working disco ball & there was music playing! Lol. BF said there wasn’t one in the men’s room. Anyway, how many places have THAT going on in their bathroom?! Heehee. Service is always great; I don’t know his name, but he’s helped us twice. Very cool, laid back guy. Omg, long review. I hope you enjoyed it if you’ve made it this far! I’m a fan of this place; it’s definitely one of the places that will keep me returning to Norfolk! Check it out!

I am conflicted with this review. I most definitely do not dislike Toast… I almost cannot honestly say that I’m a huge fan. They are a solid three star spot. The staff is friendly, the restaurant is clean, and they try hard. All that being said I was underwhelmed on this visit. Starting off the menu is a little confusing. All of the main courses are open-faced sandwiches on one piece of toast with the toppings described on the menu. For this visit, I had the Taco Pig. Shredded carnitas served with micro greens and crema. The coffee is served in paper cups and the cream/sugar are brought around as needed. My pork was sweet with no other levels of flavor. I expected carnitas to have some sweet with citrus and some spice. Unfortunately there were no levels to the profile. I also asked for a soft-boiled egg. The egg was perfectly soft boiled but it was served watery so putting on the Taco pig without soaking it was a challenge. Overall I thought, Meh. I would be willing to try them again but I recommend they cut down on the hipster and focus on the food.

Finally, the overdue wanting to try this place has come to reality. I heard about this place and I’ve never had chance to visit. I’m normally in the area because the salon I go to is not really far from here. I was in the mood to try a new place and this place was in my list of bookmarked. I thought this is the right time to pay a visit and so I did. I came here with a friend to do our usual Sunday brunch. To make story short, we both agreed to try this place. I feel like the Toast concept is pretty cool and authentic. Coming in, the restaurant was quite busy however the staff acknowledge us. He pointed out to sit anywhere we like. My first impression the place was kinda unique. Nothing too extravagant but the vibes is cool and hip. I like the idea of the open bar at the middle of the restaurant, thought its a great feature so the staff can easily see the customer. For today’s visit, I ordered the Tuna melt with a side of boiled egg. I honestly thought it was just fine. The flavor profile was one note. Don’t get me wrong, I like it but not my cup of tea. The customer service was average and so was the food. This is definitely not my ideal place for brunch. I don’t think I will come back here anytime soon. Maybe for drinks!

Came here for brunch on a Sunday. Love trying innovative things and Toast has it going on. We had the Taco Pig and Chicken Confit. The Taco Pig was the better of the two! I must confess it was so good I really didn’t want to share with my significant other… lol. Next time I want to try the Curry Byrd… can’t wait!

Not to repeat what everyone else has already said here, but I don’t know how to put it any other way. I have never thought I could like toast as much as I could until I tried it here. Toast has a unique and brilliant concept that they carry out so well. The bread itself is fantastic. It’s thick and doesn’t get too soggy. Their unique toppings are done well and the flavors mesh well together. My friend and I came here right when they opened on a Saturday morning. We initially came here for Waffletina, but decided to also try some toast as well. I ordered the Hot Chix and my friend got the chicken salad. I was completely speechless when I took that first bite. The flavors are really incredible, and presentation was beautiful. They really care about the food and their customers, because I don’t think I have ever liked anything more than that bite of toast. The hot sauce and the honey drizzled on top worked so well together. I loved the little flowers that was sprinkled on top. I definitely ate all of those too… It was that good. The chicken salad was no ordinary chicken salad. It was like a super hero chicken salad with that special power. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t like this chicken salad. I need to try to recreate some of these recipes on my own, so I won’t be spending all my money on gas to get here and their food. I love that they are open late night as well. They have some parking out front as well as street parking. They have outdoor seating with cool lights hung up everywhere. I love the ambiance of this place. Hipster yet trendy. Service is good as well. The guy who waited on us was super mellow and friendly. He wasn’t overbearing either and was around just enough to check up on us from time to time(let’s us have some good old fashion girl talk). Try the Hot Chix, you won’t be disappointed. It honestly blew Waffletina out of the water that morning. And anyone who knows me knows I LOVE waffles. I wish I lived closer, but I will most def. be back to try their other toasts.

As a VB native, I used to be so anti-Norfolk just because of the lack of parking and bad roads, but places like these are so worth the drive! First of all, they have their own lot! No metered parking, no walking from a garage, no worries! They have outdoor seating in the front and the back. Our waitress told me that they have a fire pit out back for nicer days. Love it! What I love more, though, than the décor, was their bathroom. There’s a spinning disco ball light and they have a soothing talking soundtrack. When I went in, it was a birthing tape ??? with a woman talking to you to be calm and focus on your body. It made me laugh! :-) Anyways, my friend and I both got the Hot Chix which was a chicken confit with honey butter plus a buttermilk lupo! It was also topped with a chicken skin garnish and some flower petals. We opted to get it with a soft boiled egg on top for a $ 1 extra. It was so messy, but delicious! Before coming in, I did a little research on Unilocal and thought that I wouldn’t get full off one piece of toast and some toppings, but don’t be fooled! Their slices are THICK and will get you full quick! I found myself eating the chicken off the top and not finished the bread. For dessert, we shared the churro toast with ice cream($ 3 extra) which was really good as well. it came with a chocolate«sauce» which we poured all over the ice cream and toast. I put quotations around sauce because it too thin to really be a sauce. It reminded me of chocolate milk! Overall, I had a good first experience and can’t wait to come back!

So here I am again with my 2nd review and a couple dozen visits in here. This is only about the taco pig. It topped my list of things that intimidate me that only my grandma can perfect… pulled pork. Then I saw what appeared to be raw bell peppers on top of rustic bread and I thought… how will it soften, i dont see juice. Well let me tell you what my fellow crusty companions. The taco pig doesnt need kermit in her life, she has me. The pork was a perfect consistency, the tiniest bit of bite and soooo tender. There was oodles of steam coming from it at my first cut. The peppers are pickled, so they are soft and sweet, but slightly crunchy to add some bite with the onions. Then top it with sour cream that is seasoned, was a great surprise. I got extra because Im greedy. Wow, im legit doing my first in restaraunt review as I sit here devouring my pig because its just that good. So what are you waiting for. Drive down 21st street make a right on colonial and go across the best side of the train tracks and as soon as you contemplate your decision to come to norfolk, you’ve arrived to toast. You’re welcome.

So this was fun. I was actually surprised to enjoy this. The atmosphere was relaxed, service was great, food was tasty. All the food was fresh, meats were moist, and it was all well seasoned. I ordered 4 options for me and a friend, two drinks, tax and tip came to over $ 40, just to give you an idea on price point. But I was able to leave here full and with plenty to go, so all in all I’d say the price point is not as obscene as I’d first believed when I first heard about the concept of this new restaurant.

What did I just step into and where did my friend bring me? Arriving later in the evening, I had no idea what to expect. There was a DJ playing various old school songs! I would have been dancing had I not been so tired! My friend ordered me a Lionshead which I enjoyed. Then, he put a menu in front of me «order something order something! You’ll like it!» The first thing I noticed was the variety & price! Wow! We went with the Caviar and Eggy Weg! Both dishes were excellent! I try not to eat bread but, definitely worth the calories! The bread tasted homemade & was cut thick. With all of the pics I’m seeing, I’d like to try the confit chicken next! My friend was giving me a tour of the spot and introducing me to folks. The people were so nice & welcoming! It seemed like every fixture has a story & the establishment certainly has character. The best part for me was walking through the kitchen to get to the back patio to find a quiet place for me to sit in a train car! Loved it! Then, folks started up the fire pit… Talk about feeling at home in my own backyard(and yes, I can vouch for trains too).

This has become one of my favorite new places to stop in for an affordable and delicious meal for lunch. I am giving them a four-star rating for now, which will be followed up by a five-star rating by the end of the year if they keep up the great work. It is my sense that they are still peaking to higher levels of culinary magic. With the ambiance and décor already well covered in other reviews, let me begin with a few comments on the directions. Toast has been described as being across from Handsome Biscuit. Well it is, sort of, but not directly. I drove right past it the first time, under the impression that it was. If you are coming from the Ghent side of Colonial Avenue, take a right on 24th Street, and then take the immediate left into their parking lot, which is in an enclosed fenced in area. If you are coming from the Park Place side of Colonial Avenue, take a left on 24th Street and proceed as above. It’s that simple. To echo what others have said, I also had a hard time imagining how much I would enjoy food poured onto a piece of toast. I’ve never been much of a toast person and have never even owned a toaster at home. After eating here four times, they have made a believer out of me. This is truly an ingenious concept. So far I have tried the following menu items. These items are quoted verbatim from their menu, with any apparent misspellings being chic and intentional. CHICKENCONFITWITHHONEYBUTTER + HOTSAUCE: This one is my favorite so far. The flavors cascaded upon my tonngue and taste buds with crashing waves of deliciousness. The heat level of the hot sauce was very subtle and subdued without being overpowering. By some freak printing accident, this item was left off a copy of their newly updated menu during my visit today. If this happens to you, DONOTPANIC! It is still available. My very knowledgeable and professional server proved it by showing me a corrected copy of their new menu. SMKSALMON(NOVALOX) + CAPERBUTTR + KREMFRESH + EVERYTHINGSPICE: I love salmon, and the other ingredients combined together beautifully to create a composition with a medley of flavors that was profoundly delicious. CURRYBYRDCHICKEN + YELLOWCURRYBUTTER&WARMBERRYJAM: This was another winner. The yellow curry butter and warm berry jam combined together beautifully for a most delicious composition. This was the sweetest of their offerings tried so far, with its level of sweetness nicely restrained without being overpowering. TACOPORKCARNITAS + PKLREDPEPPERANDONIONS + SOURCREAM + HERBS: This one still needs a little bit of tweaking, in my opinion. The pork carnitas were a bit on the dry side for my tastes, and I would have preferred a stronger presence of the red pepper. I think this one can also be improved with a little bit of hot sauce, just enough to reach the subtle heat level of their CHICKENCONFIT. Each of the above items comes with a steak knife and a fork, both of which come in very handy for cutting into the thick piece of toast provided for each of their main offerings. For the ADD-ONS section of their menu, I tried their NICEBACON, which includes two very large strips of delicious smoked bacon. They will make it extra crispy if you ask them to, which is how I like it. For a non-alcoholic beverage, I tried their BLACKBERRYTHYMECHILLEDTEA, which was refreshing and delicious. This one has been tweaked a bit on their new menu, with the addition of coffee and ginger beer, which was still delicious. Today’s lunch meal, which consisted of their CURRYBYRDCHICKEN, NICEBACON, and BLACKBERRYICEDTEA, came to a total of only $ 11.81. One beautiful thing about their menu concept is that they use the same menu, and with the same outstanding prices, for lunch, brunch, and dinner. The majesty of simplicity! I haven’t tried any of their cocktails yet. Their cocktail program appears to still be a work in progress and very minimalist. The most expensive cocktails listed on their menu are currently only $ 7. I will be sure to stop in during a future evening visit to try one, as I am not a daytime drinker. I am eagerly looking foward to my next visit. In the meantime, I will be sure to STAYCRUSTY, as it says right on their menu.

An entrée, on toast. At first I wondered how I would enjoy such a concept, but the Chicken Confit turned out to be one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Loads of flavor. Don’t shy away because it says hot sauce. The heat is extremely subtle.(And I don’t like spicy at all; so trust me.) I also have to mention that not one piece of chicken was dry. And the toast — the perfect ratio of crunch and bread for the dish. For dessert I enjoyed the Tres Leches. The flavors are like bread pudding but it had a brûlée topping. They give you a steak knife(and fork, of course) and you’ll need it. The edges of the toast are tougher than I’d like. It’s a very casual dining experience. I don’t feel like I’m in a restaurant. It’s more like if Urban Outfitters had a café inside. With booths. Covered in your grandmother’s favorite vinyl floral tablecloths. There are Polaroids on the ceiling and pillars of books on each sides of the door. The music is light and everything you want to shimmy to. Toast is like something you’ve never seen. And that’s a good thing.
