Yum Yum’s Heavenly Bakery

OK, folks. This is it.
Since moving to Norfolk from VB abt 8 – 9 months ago, I’ve been scouring Unilocal,Google and any other online place that will give me consumer ratings on everything from Chinese Food to cupcakes. I’d seen stellar reviews for a few other places, tried them and was literally angry that I went out of my way, spent my hard earned money on a place and found it to be lacking in the most basic of ways. Being the eternal optimist and knowing there could be a diamond in the rough anywhere, I decided not to give up my quest and took a chance on Yum Yum’s.
Um… it doesn’t get much better than this.
Here are the 3 things about this place that bowled me over:
1) I went late, they had day old cupcakes and not a lot of other stuff (they are a small establishment and truly bake in small batches). I was disappointed, but understood fully that I would have to get there early next time. I bought the day old cupcakes and the nice lady, who is the co-​owner, gave me a discount. When I got home and sunk my teeth into day old cupcakes that tasted like they were just baked 15 mins ago, I nearly fell down. That’s unheard of… unless you’re baking at home! When I bake brownies or cupcakes or anything, have left overs, package them up properly, eat them the next day and they still taste good — – well, you know you’ve done something right. That’s my impression of their day old cupcakes!
2) Their cream puffs. I have never tasted a cream puff in my life anywhere that I have liked until now. Because they were out of so much stuff and because it was my first time at their establishment, the nice lady (wish I could remember her name because she was super nice), offered me a complimentary cream puff. I knew deep in my heart that I wasn’t going to like it, but being gracious I accepted it politely and thanked her. I had every intention of throwing it in the trash when I got home (again, I’ve never tasted a cream puff that I liked and since I didn’t pay for it I did not care). After tasting the day old cupcakes and being wowed, I just took a bite out of the cream puff. Soft, fresh, creamy, not too sweet, quality ingredients… another jackpot! I literally kept saying over and over out loud to my 3.5 year old «is this place for real?» while she looked at me smiling with cream all over her lips and chin and her mouth stuffed with cupcake.
3) Customer Service. I’ve been in some form of service oriented industry for most of my adult working life. I’ve worked for some well-​known corporations, though never in the food services industry. I know how hard it is to service the public… especially a public as demanding and aggressive as those in South Eastern VA (military folk — lol). I’ve been trained and pushed to give quality service to whoever is in front of me at any given time regardless of one’s age, gender, weight, race, how expensive their clothes are, etc., therefore I know quality service when I’m exposed to it. The only other establishment in South Hampton Roads that I’ve frequented that rivals Yum Yum’s customer service is Shockley’s Sweete Shop in Virginia Beach. Between these two establishments, the owners are gems!
I know this is a long review, so forgive me. I just felt like giving the proper kudos to a small business owner who clearly has a passion for what she does versus just wanting to open up shop and brag to all her friends that she owns something. LOL
Yum Yum’s is the real deal, folks. The real deal. I can’t wait til their new place opens! ;-)

WOW! No… I mean WOWWY WOW WOW! This place is the real deal! Yum Yum’s Heavenly Bakery is located in a small unassuming building (the owner informed me that they will soon move to a new, «yet to be decided» location). By the look of the place I would have probably never noticed it, but luckily Unilocal led me to this little gem of a bakery. The super nice brother and sister owners/​bakers only offer a small amount of goodies daily because everything is fresh, made with nothing fake or funky so you can feel good about savouring these amazing delights. If they have them, you MUST try the donut holes, truly the best ever. I also bought a coconut cupcake (my fav!) and a German chocolate cake cookie. If I lived in Norfolk, this would be my «go to» bakery. Go on, support this local little bakery, believe me, your taste buds will not be sorry!

The birthday cake we ordered was great. Everyone that had some loved it. Service was friendly and helpful. I would give more stars but they don’t except credit cards yet.

After reading all the great reviews for Yum Yum’s, I decided to stop there one afternoon while chauffeuring my daughter back and forth from a friend’s. It’s a pretty small place and easy to drive by if you’re not looking for it. I’ve been in several local bakeries that don’t have great ambience – this place doesn’t either – so I don’t really consider that as an important factor. I guess my biggest disappointment was that the bakery only had a couple of items available for purchase. Like, literally. I think there were maybe two or three types of cookies and possibly a pastry. The staff did apologize and say they had had a busy day with some catering business, but I was disappointed. My daughter and I picked out a couple cookies. They were fine and I don’t remember them being especially expensive or anything. I also don’t remember them being particularly fabulous. Maybe we just hit them on an off day.

Most adorable shop! The owners are such sweeties and the desserts are amazing. Do yourself a favor and stop by. This is my fav bakery and the prices are really affordable.

Anyone who gives this place less than 4 stars is obviously missing tastebuds. This place is A-​MAY-​ZING. We were doing a Norfolk bake off (my sister and I) and we stopped here after another bakery. When we told them our plan for the day, they apologized for not having cupcakes, but offered us a free sample of their donut holes. HOLY CRAP. Moist, cream-​filled, chocolate holes, made my whole afternoon. (Until I tried the rest of their stuff)
We chatted with them about bakeries around Hampton Roads, and had a lovely time. Finally we got to our order. We ended up getting two whoopie pie like treats and two mini bunt cakes.
After getting home and cutting them up to share, I would have to say these are by far one of the best bunt cakes and whoopie pies I’ve ever had. Not too sugary, very moist and not overpowering. The flavors were fantastic. The whoopie pie was chocolate and cream and the other was chocolate and peanut butter. Both amazeballs. Now onto the chocolate chip bunt cake. OMG, my fav, by far. Not to say the coffee one wasn’t great, but I dunno what they put in that chocolate chip one, but it’s out of this world. After I ate, I wanted more, even though I was stuffed. It was that good.
I can’t wait to try the cupcakes. Now I know GET THERE EARLY! Or you won’t get any. They will sell out.
The company and the treats were such a joy. I’m really glad I found this place, even though it’s a little off the beaten path.

yum yum… guys and dolls the name says it all… please go ready to buy… you cannot go into this scrumptious smelling establishment without buying something… and please go early, it’s worth doing, i’m even going to try, ‘gasp’, to actually catch them when they open… :-)

Yum Yum Bakery doesn’t look like a typical bakery. They have a small selection of that doesn’t look very appealing. But looks can be deceiving.
One of the owners let us taste test their pink lemonade crème filled donut holes. I have NEVER tasted a crème filled donut that I liked, until now! That was great, so we ended up leaving with two vanilla donuts (which had blue frosting coloring). That was a great donut! The owners were very friendly and advised us to «Have a Yummy Day» on the way out.
The Pros: Excellent staff and excellent tasting pastries
The Cons: Small place, lacking selection, and does not accept credit cards (yet).
I can see this place really taking off very soon with a bigger location and larger selections. Don’t sleep on Yum Yum Bakery!

I dont know if having this gem of a place so close to home is a blessing or a curse… Its so good that I liked their banana pecan muffin and I dont even like bananas… It is also so close that I want to go there almost every day which isnt the best for my expanding waitline.

Order «The King Arthur» sammich (sandwich) and tell them Asia sent you. You’re welcome.

OK. So after having had Yum Yums on 3 separate occasions, I had to give them that extra star. I also heard they do the swiss meringue buttercream (which I just missed out on today) but with all the other items I’ve had from the shop being so darn stellar they definitely earned that 5^th star.
Donut holes filled with buttercream, cream puffs that are super tasty with wonderfully fluffy and eggy pastry cream. I got a raspberry cookie today and it was soft and buttery.
Really. Everything they do here is just amazing. I still haven’t had a sandwich but I can’t help but gorge myself on sweets because. well. I just can’t. Everything is impossibly good here.

I had the privilege of stumbling upon this little shop while in my search for tasty treats on the west side of Norfolk. The staff is very friendly and informative. I had key lime cake donut holes that were very moist and poignantly flavored. The caramel and pecan topped brownie was slightly tougher than what I am used to but oh man was that flavor wonderful and complex. I am looking forward to trying the sandwiches and other tasty desserts they have to offer.

This place is a hidden gem. I love sweets and this place can satisfy any sweet tooth. I went in a little early and they will still baking. All they had available were a few cookies and a tray of apple pie doughnut holes. The owner offered me one of the doughnut holes and, after one bite, I was soled. It was delicious.
The owner is also the head baker. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. Everything is made from scratch. You’re not gonna find anything processed there.
I have been searching for something to bring back from Norfolk and I think I found it. I will definitely be stopping in again before I go home.

I came here for a UYE yesterday. The place was small but they make up for that with INCREDIBLE goodies. I tried a lemon cream puff and it was so tasty, I wanted to dive behind the counter and eat them all. Also their plain brownies were sinfully good. If they would just accept credit cards, this place would be golden!

I’m not big on sweets, but OH My… I just jizzed my pants over their Turkey sammich. Its so effing good! I cant even… It reminds me of Taste sandwiches except it doesnt cost me an arm and a leg. I can only imagine what the other sandwiches taste like.
So as far the sweet goodies goes, my favorite by far was their cream puffs! Of course they would bring those out minutes before we departed. I am glad I took one home because they were sooo amazing! Melted in my mouth.
The star fruit on their peach custard tart was pretty impressive. You cant get those around here so it was a nice touch. I also liked the texture of the crust. It was a little hard, but once you bit into them, they crumbled softly.
The cupcakes were my least fave. I think a few other Unilocalers will hate me for this, but the original cupcake that I had sampled was good, just not the best I’ve ever had. To be fair however, I dont think I’ve yet to come across my perfect cupcake. The ones with a perfect balance of icing and moist cake. Don’t get me wrong, their cupcakes are moist, but it was the icing that didn’t sit well with me. I think they were lacking the creamy taste in their icing.
Their brownie with all the caramel and nuts on top was phenomenal! By far the best brownie I’ve ever had. All the extra stuff on top just tipped it up there for me.
With all that being said, def. try them out. At least grab a sandwich for lunch! You will not be disappointed. I think for the tart, the cupcake, the sandwich, the brownie and the cream puffs, I only paid $ 17! Yes, affordable indeed!
Location is kinda hard to find, its small and not easily viewable from the road. Might just be me, since I’m partially blind and oblivious to my surroundings. Super small store, with one table and a couple of chairs. I do remember thinking how funny it was that they used vinyl wood flooring for their ceiling tile.
Also, they only take cash. Kind of a bummer since I hardly ever take cash out. *Comment to the owner: get Paypal card reader or even Square Ups. They offer low fees per transaction, but at least you will be able to do credit card transactions.

I’ve been there every day that they’re open and they are fantastic every time. The best sandwiches in Virginia. They make their own bread. Their ingredients are fresh. The spices are spot on and evenly balanced. I’ve had their Jive Turkey, and it’s sweet, cool, and fresh. The Homewrecker packs some heat that’s settled easilly settled with the roast beef and onions. The Greezy Cheezy has got to be the best grilled cheese sandwich I’ve had in a long time. I also really appreciate the simplicity of their menu. There’s no complicated descriptions with adjectives and nutrition facts. There’s only the ingredients. And that’s all you need.
The desserts are better than any other desserts I’ve ever tasted. I’ve been to Disney World’s Epcot and went on a dessert spree in every fine dinning restaurant around and nothing compares to Yum Yum’s. Today I had one of their pumpkin cookies and the pumpkin flavor was on par with the cinnamon spread all throughout it. There was a simple swirl of icing on the top and it was just enough, not too much or too little.
I’ve had their cake balls with filling before and I’m always surprised at the burst of flavor inside the moist cake. The cupcakes are what got me addicted to them; they’re moist, flavorful, and the icing is like ice cream. Their desserts can have anything from chocolate, to fruit, to jasmine.
I know it’s a cliché, but if you want some food that’s really cooked with love, go to Yum Yum’s. The owners are the kindest people around and they are truly hospitable. Their amazing service, delicious sandwiches, and heavenly pastries will always make you happy.

Beat places in the Norfolk are for a good home made sandwich to heavenly desserts to warm your tummy! They are beyond amazing here, the dessert are so sweet and moist just like grandma’s cooking on a holiday! Their sandwiches which I have two of the five are beyond amazing the bread home made and they are made fresh right in front of you! What more could y’all ask for? NOTHING this place has it all, great food, great desserts and amazing owners!!! Can’t wait for my next visit to them for more delicious heavenly food!!!

It’s good. Really good. Like slap your mama good. The cookies, the cupcakes, the sandwiches, the bread, the scones, the cakes… I cannot describe it to you…
It really isn’t fair that this place would open up within walking distance from my house. I’m really a little mad about that fact. I have been waiting for a good cupcake place in HR and this spot is so much more that I really need to stop myself from going there more often.
