As LA becomes more «musical theater friendly», and more and more productions are born here in the city, ANMT is a remarkable resource and an incredibly nurturing facility for creating new works from the ground up.
The dramaturgical staff are talented beyond belief and whether you’re a veteran writer or a beginner, the level of constructive, informed critique is priceless. I sat in on a session with a writing partner/​member a few years ago — and I never left!

ANMT, the Academy for New Musical Theatre, is an academy dedicated to creating new musicals. Taken from their website, ANMT is «a community of professional writers, composers, producers, and actors working together to create new musicals for tomorrow’s audiences.» They offer one of only three professional programs in the country for writers, lyricists, and composers in the musical theatre genre.
I have worked with the staff as an actor at ANMT on many different musical projects for several years now. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and they always aim at producing exceptional, professional pieces using constructive criticism to enhance the quality of the work.
In addition to offering year-​long professional classes, ANMT has a very extensive workshop curriculum open to anyone looking to hone skills in book-​writing, acting, singing, lyric-​writing, and composing. They also have a repertory company called ARC that does readings of new musicals at the Colony Theatre in Burbank every couple of months. Getting involved with ANMT opens you up to a wonderful writing and acting community. I’ve had writers and composers contact me to sing pieces. I’ve seen actors contact writers to compose pieces for them to sing. The doors are always open and the opportunities are endless for creating fantastic work.
