Boy… how do these people come up with some of these these reviews? This is a HOTDOGJOINT!!! Jimmy has been feeding me and my family since the 1970’s, when he worked his way up to owner of Plainfield’s original Red Tower. Jimmy is an American success story and his Texas Weiners and Fat Boy’s with cheese are perfect. Get off your iPhone and enjoy Red Tower while it’s still there. An acquired taste, butYou will not be disappointed. A+++++ Note to grumpy yuppie naysayers– go to Mcdonalds.

I would not recommend this place to anyone. Do yourself a favor and stay clear. I should have turnaround immediately after entering and encountering a horrible«dingy» smell. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve ventured into a number of grease spoons over the past 30 yrs, and to my surprise, I’ve experienced great food and customer service. This place offers neither. We stood at the counter waiting for service without any acknowledgement from the cashier. The quality of the food wasn’t fit to consume. Like I said, stay clear and spend your $$ elsewhere.

Only accept cash, rude employees and owner, food isn’t fresh but sits for a while until they serve it. Nothing home made.

This place used to be better. I would have given it a 3 star(3.5 actually if we want to get technical) in the 90’s or 80’s, but after going last night not so. Hot dogs and Texas Weiners are still good. The sign on the wall says Schickhaus and you can taste a difference in the dogs. I think it’s what they use. Grilled nicely. The chili sauce is pretty good, but not as good as J&G in Dunellen. Regardless of what brand hot dog they use I think it’s a good brand and one befitting of a Texas Weiner. The hamburgers are where this place falls flat. They used to be freshly prepared hamburgers that were thick and juicy, but now you can tell they use frozen patties. They were horrible and look nothing like the picture on the wall any more. While the Spanish guys got my order correct, my friend asked for a burger with lettuce and cheese, but he got pickles and ketchup also which he didn’t ask for. If the burger was good I’d give them 3 stars The other negative I’ve always had about this place is their sketchy bathroom. The restaurant is right on a busy highway, and the bathroom you have to go outside around the building. It’s always left unlocked, so you never know what you might find.

Good hot dogs here. The chili is hotter than average and it will repeat on you throughout the day. This is a good thing unless you’re a salesman and meeting people all day. I’d go back without hesitation. A pretty clean establishment from what I saw.

Breakfast is better than the lunch menu. Eggs and hash brown are standard fare but consistent in flavor. Drink sizes are a bit skewed in my opinion. The medium is more like a small. The Orange Juice is always good to go. Prices could be cheaper. It’s quiet, so that’s a plus. However it is a bit disheartening to eat there when there are no other customers or only 1 or 2. I’ve had better but worth a shot if you want to try something on a Saturday/Sunday morning. My rating: 3 Stars.

I stopped by after 30 years of passing by there. I got 2 hotdogs with everything on top. Place was empty, it was around 6:30pm. I asked a worker how long this establishment been opened for and he said his grandfather started in 1983. Food was okay. Onion was cunch and chili looked ground beef and grayish color. Hotdog was crunch hard skin kind. I saw some flies flying around, kinda dirty seem very greasy. 2 hotdogs with everything on top with small root beer was $ 7 and change.

These other clowns are ridiculous! RT2 is a culinary institution. This place is partially responsible for putting chili dogs on the map. I can still taste the delicious chili with perfectly diced onions… Life changing! Ask for Jimmy and get the royal treatment delivered by the chili dog king himself.

I stopped here for 2 chili dogs last night. These were the most tasteless dry dogs I have ever had. They were simply awful. The chili tasted like paste and entire ordeal would best be forgotten.

Standard old-school Texas Weiner place. Hot dog was so-so, fries were fresh but nothing special, side of chili was bad. Prices are a little high for this kind of place, $ 6 for the above, drink not included. Won’t be coming back here.

My son and I enjoyed the Texas Weiner hot dogs. Chili onion mustard. There are a ton of other food items on the menu. Hot dogs were not as tasty as a windmill from down the shore or hot dog johnny’s but then again if you are in the area of red tower than those other places are too far to drive. Order a red tower Texas weiner and enjoy

Menu includes«Fatboy» 1⁄3 lb. hamburgers, Texas wieners, sandwiches, and daily specials, like homemade soups, meatloaf, etc. One Greek-looking guy was in the back banging out all the food, and another guy handled the counter. The«Texas wiener» is indigenous to New Jersey, invented in Paterson, NJ, and has spread as far west as eastern Pennsylvania. It is a grilled hot dog topped with chili, chopped raw onions, and yellow mustard. According to Wikipedia, the«Texas» reference is to the chili sauce, which actually has a stronger Greek cuisine influence due to the ethnicity of the cooks who invented it. I grew up in New Jersey around the Plainfield area, and I can vouch for this fact, as the multitude of Texas wiener stands in the vicinity all seemed to be run by Greeks. The Texas wiener at Red Tower II was very good($ 2.95). It’s a Schickhaus foot-long, topped with homemade beef chili. I forewent the mustard in order to better taste the dog and the chili. The casing had a nice snap to it, and was juicy, with lots of garlic flavor. The chili was mild, but satisfying. It complimented the hot dog without overpowering it. This place is about as no-frills as you can get, but I will be back to try the burgers, soups, and some of the other homecooked items. It is a good alternative to the ubiquitous fast-food chains that line the highway.
