Purcell Pavilion, Purschmell Pavilion – it will always be the JACC to me. And yes, I realize that Purcell Pavilion and the Joyce Athletic & Convocation Center are not technically the same thing; Purcell is merely the south dome of the JACC. But people love to kiss the butts of rich donors when they really should continue to honor the decidedly non-rich people who made Notre Dame great in so many ways. I’ve spent a ton of time here, and I can honestly say that most of it hasn’t been for sporting events – although that will probably change, eventually. They’ve moved a lot of the memorabilia out, which I have mixed feelings about, but I will always remember moving around behind the curtain, intramural broomball, and Masses that lasted exactly one hour despite the fact that there were about 8,000 communicants in attendance. I don’t know why the exterior of the domes is no longer white. I don’t like the fact that Juniper Road no longer exists as a dividing line between the JACC and Notre Dame Stadium. Shamrocks are OK, and I’m not against all change – not automatically. But you need to teach first-year students respect, and that means honoring the people who came before you. And yes, this is about No. 11. Isn’t everything ultimately about No. 11?
