Steer clear of Dr. Cheung!
Dr. Cheung is the worst dentist I have ever visited, and I’ve seen a lot. I was assigned Dr. Cheung through my insurance provider. My first experience was the cleaning, which was the most painful cleaning I have experienced. He was very rough and cut my gums by scraping too hard and too far above the tooth, leaving my mouth bleeding, and my teeth didn’t even feel that clean afterwards.
I told Dr. Cheung I’d had pain in a molar for over a year, to the point that I was chewing on the other side of my mouth to avoid the pain. He told me the tooth had a very deep cavity, and that I might need a root canal. When he removed the previous filling, he said that he got all the decay out, filled it, and told me I «90%» wouldn’t need a root canal. The pain subsided for a while and I had no more appointments with Dr. Cheung so I thought nothing of it. Not long after, the pain came back, but I decided to suffer through it rather than return to him.
When I found a new dentist, he immediately recognized that I needed a root canal. While performing the root canal, he said that the root was badly infected, and that it was a good thing I came to him when I did. Had I listened to Dr. Cheung when he said I was fine, the infection would have spread and caused further damage.
Before that, Dr. Cheung took X-​rays and told me that I would need six fillings completed, a few were replacements for older fillings. Not six months earlier I had had a series of old fillings replaced by my previous dentist, so this came as a shock to me, but I believed him. I wonder now if they needed to be replaced at all.
During the fillings, he scolded me for damaging one of his tools because I was squirming so much (because he was not gentle). Rather than continuing, he should have asked if there was anything he could do to make me more comfortable. I have had fillings in at least half of my teeth, but Dr. Cheung took so long and made me open my mouth so wide that my jaw was sore for one month afterwards. I had never experienced that, not after getting my wisdom teeth removed while I was awake, or after a root canal.
He grazed my tongue more than once with a needle and never apologized, and he left cuts and debris in my mouth.
He performed another filling but left a jagged piece of filling between the teeth that tears floss. When I complained to him about it, he put floss between the teeth and told me it was supposed to be that difficult to floss. My new dentist said it should not be like that and has offered to redo the filling entirely.
Seriously, save your time, money, and health and avoid this man!

I’ve been going to Dr. Cheung for over 10 years now. He’s my family’s dentists. All of my siblings and I have gotten our braces done here too. I’ve never experienced a problem with Dr. Cheung or his staff. His staff is very bubbly, outgoing, and makes you feel comfortable being in the office. I even got my boyfriend to go here and he loves it too.

I will keep this review short, but stay away from his office Jump to the end for my recommendation.
I went to Dr. Cheung for 15 years and he did a lot of dental work for me. Despite my hesitation about how he worked on me, I continued to go because I thought the final work was good. Like others here, he argued with his staff in front of me many times, going from English to Chinese when the arguments really heated up. He left debris in my mouth after he finished working on me. He cut my lip and he refused to send me to an endodontist for my 5^th root canal telling me that I didn’t know what I has talking about, and that it was «no big fat deal» and that I should just go home and let it settle down. What he had missed was 4 absesses at the tips of my roots on the tooth in question. He had not taken an x-​ray of the top of the tooth where the problem was.
I had a new crown crack on me after 10 days, which he promptly replaced, but it was always mis-​shapen until my new and better dentist replaced it.
If you go to the 8^th Floor of this same building, you will find a much better and more sensitive dentist at Oakland City Dental. The dentist on the 8^th floor is a real find!

Very friendly and professional. Real comfortable and satisfied with the services provided by Dr. Cheung and Linda.

First time and last time — basically the staff determined I was not eligible for a teeth cleaning and x-​rays (it had not been six months so it was not covered) but instead of telling me that and rescheduling when it would be covered they lied and pretended they didn’t know my coverage details but were very clear that I would be charged directly for all services if it hadn’t been six months. Prior to entering the exam room I overheard the staffer on the phone with Anthem and she said «so there is nothing I can do?» and then she called someone else at Anthem to confirm my coverage. Even though she knew this information (it had not been six months) she withheld it and kept asking me if I knew the date and tried her best to make sure their backside was covered when they billed me directly for services that would have been fully covered in a few days. Very scummy business practice.

Damn, I wish I had read these reviews before I went to see Dr. Cheung. I wasn’t in pain before I went to see him — just a routine checkup — but since then I have been in intense pain for 6 weeks, not able to drink water without flinching. He charged me an exorbitant amount of money for work that may or may not have been necessary, and did a shoddy job that left me in continuous pain. I need to find another dentist to fix the problem now. Dr. Cheung is a nice person, but steer clear.

This one star really equates to negative 10 stars. I signed up for Unilocal specifically to warn others NEVER to go to Dr. Cheung. Save yourself! Don’t do it! You’d be better off never seeing a dentist ever again than to go see this TERRIBLE dentist. I can’t believe my dental insurance could list him as a dentist! Going to see him is like visiting a back alley shop. Every one of their staff is rude. They are completely incompetent.
I finally get into the procedure room after an hour of insurance confusion and it is filthy! There are smudges on the walls. All of the equipment is old (from the early 80’s). There are spider webs in the corners of the tiny room and they have a boom box sitting right next to the chair with loud music. The dental hygienist comes in still chewing her lunch and talks to me with her mouth full. Even without her mouth full of food, I cannot understand what the heck she is saying. In a terrible attempt to make small talk she looks at my chart and sees that I am on birth control and decides that’s an appropriate thing to discuss with me. Uh… no!
Then the cleaning begins (oh no!). She was terrible. She was so rough and made my (well-​cared-​for) gums bleed like never before. She didn’t even think to use the suction as I was choking on my own spit and blood! (Sorry to be so graphic). Then when I finally got her to use the suction, she left it in my mouth for the entire cleaning! It was getting stuck to my tongue and cheek and really hurt! I was trying to show her the discomfort in my face but she was not picking up on it. Also the air/​water spray tasted really gross like old pipes or something. I usually don’t mind going to the dentist, but I was scared the whole time through my cleaning that she was going to pull out a tooth or a filling or give me a infection with unsanitary water. Then it was time for her to clean my teeth with the automated machine. She used this disgusting cocoanut tasting paste she said was toothpaste. It made me gag and she got it all over my face. When that was finally over, I was so relieved. Dr. Cheung then came in and I was trying very hard to stay optimistic. I couldn’t understand a word he was saying either. He sat down and asked if I had any pain anywhere or if there was anything I wanted to change about my smile (my teeth are as perfect as they can get. I’ve had braces, take very good care of them, and have a very healthy mouth.) I told him there wasn’t anything I wanted to change, just looking for a check-​up.
He had me open my mouth and held my jaw as I did. My jaw popped as it sometimes does and he said that was a very bad sign. He then felt around my glands in my throat and asked if there was any pain in a very concerned tone. No– no pain. I was a little worried at this point. Then he poked around in my mouth. He was calling back to the hygienist as he touched every tooth. He kept saying, «cavity… embedded cavity, something-​something cavity…» on almost every tooth. I figured he was talking about old fillings but to my horror, he wasn’t!!! He then leaned up the chair and said that I had a few cavities. He had me hold a mirror and pointed to every discoloration on each of my back teeth and some tiny spots on my front teeth. 18! 18 cavities he said!!! I hadn’t been to the dentist in almost a year, this is true, but 18 cavities?! How could this possibly be?! I asked him with tears welling up in my eyes, «why do I have so many cavities?!» He said, «because of your mom… haha…I’m joking» !!! What the hell! He seriously just said that?! He then continued to say to me, «has anyone every talked to you about your gum problem?» He then showed me very graphic pictures of decaying gums and explained that my gums were in a terrible state and that they had to do a deep medicated cleaning on them and give me medicine because otherwise, «all of your teeth will fall out.» OMG!!! He said, «You’ll be like those old people who take their teeth out.» I can’t believe this! He then showed me this form that was about metal fillings versus the white fillings and made me sign a form and I asked, «but which fillings do you do?» He wouldn’t say but said that he had to inform all of his patients about the harms of the metal fillings… But I’m pretty sure those are the ones he uses! At this point I was furious and wanted to get the hell out of this scam of a shop. I said, «are we done because I want to leave.» He asked why and I told him he was making me very uncomfortable and upset and that I wanted a second opinion on everything. He fought with me saying he already showed me all of the cavities! I ran out of there and called to say they should not file the claim.
AVOID THIS TERRIBLE TERRIBLE PERSON! HE IS A SCAM ARTIST! I don’t know how he can live with himself.

I was assigned Dr. Cheung by my insurance company so decided to try him out. First impression was that the office was grimey — dust in the corners and on countertops, crud caked on the joint of the light that swings over the chair, and a funky smell. The technician was nice enough and did a quick cleaning of my teeth and x-​rays. Dr. Cheung then came in, looked at my x-​rays and examined my mouth in about 5 minutes, and told me I 1) need a «deep cleaning» under my gums, 2) I have irreversible gum disease, 3) my one (and only) filling is corroded and needs to be replaced, and 4) I have FOURTEEN cavities. All of this would add up to about $ 2000 worth of dental work, *after* my insurance paid their portion. I was shocked, not only because of the extent of the dental work, but also because I have always had a very healthy mouth — above average healthy, and, again, only one cavity ever, and I have zero pain or sensitivity to hot or cold. I sought a second opinion, and the extremely thorough and careful dentist I saw today (in an immaculately clean office) confirmed that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my teeth (NO cavities), my gums, or my current filling, and that a deep cleaning is not necessary since I have no gum recession or irritation that is typically due to deep plaque. I am extremely concerned that Dr. Cheung is taking advantage of his patients and the insurance companies by prescribing unnecessary, painful, and possibly harmful dental work. I am filing a formal complaint with my insurance company. I suggest that anyone else who has had a similar experience does the same.

I wouldnt even give him one star if it was an option. I had braces there when i was a teenager, worst experience EVER! Dentist is VERY RUDE to his patients, sloppy, and no attention to patient care. Expect to be waiting in the waiting room for at least an hour before they even bother to call you in.
I had four teeth removed for braces it was the most painful experience ever! He did not properly numb my mouth and took over 45 minutes to pull out a tooth! Seriously the worst dentist ever! Years later I had my wisdom teeth pulled out by a good dentist, the entire process was painless and took less than 10 minutes per tooth. This guys is a real scam artist and terrible dentist. Avoid him at all costs if you value your money and your oral health.

I went to Dr. Cheung for about two years. I had some experiences over that time that began to cause me to wonder about his honesty. In December 2010 he did a full dental exam and told me that I had a bunch of cavities that needed work and that I also needed to replace a couple of my crowns. I told him that he had done those crowns himself in the last two years. He insisted that he hadn’t done them. I decided to get an exam from another dentist for a second opinion. That dentist said I had no cavities at all and that my crowns were fine. So, as others have stated in their reviews, Dr. Cheung is a very dishonest man who seems to be taking advantage of his patients and scamming them for false dental work.

He has screwed up my teeth! Upon coming to him, I suddenly have numerous cavities per year/​visit? I might have had one cavity in my whole life. I’m really wondering whether I had any cavities at all, or if he just decided to make up some cavities so he could get paid more for my visits. Oh yeah, one filling fell out and upon replacing it, they tried to charge me until I reminded them that I wasn’t supposed to be charged for a replacement. Jeez.
Here’s the big problem… Upon going in to get ONE filling adjusted, he decided that he would adjust my entire bite on the left side of my mouth. He never consulted me about this, never even mentioned it… MALPRACTICE ANYONE???
As a teenager I had braces which perfected my teeth and bite, and I’ve never had the slightest issue with my teeth or bite… ever!
Well, thanks to «Dr.» Cheung, my bite is completely messed up. After over 5 weeks, it has not «adjuststed» and is not «perfected» as he promised it would. He also tried to tell me that my bite was always messed up and had nothing to do with all the work that he did. Oh, it gets even better. He then said that the solution was an expensive dental procedure that he could perform to make my bite perfect. Ha! What a god damned f’n scam!
This is now a problem that I have to live with every day, I suppose until I find a new dentist to fix what he screwed up… and hopefully I can afford it in the end!
And to top it all off, the cleanings seem really bad. I think they take all of 10 minutes to clean my teeth. They feel cleaner when I brush at home with my Sonic Care toothbrush. So what am I paying for?
If I had my way, he’d be stripped of his license (assuming he has one) so that he can never screw up someone’s teeth again!
Whatever you do, DO NOT go to this dentist.

Thanks to Dr Cheung, I had to replace 2– porcelin crowns which he previously did for me, and I also owe my second would be root canal thanks to his terrible teethworks done on me years ago.
I am NEVER going back there again!

My daughter has been going to Dr Cheung for over 3 years. We love him and the staff.
So much that my husband also began going and he loves him to.
I have just added him as my dentist as well.
He is very friendly and he has no problem answering questions. Im not sure why you all have giving him such bad reviews but I think he is wonderful for orthodontic care and for a dentist

If I had a choice I would give this clinic zero stars, Dr Cheung is a crap its very difficult to communicate with him at times when he speaks, this place is very unsanitary if you pay close attention to detail the equipment is very dirty.
I had three teeth removed by this doctor. dam it was very painful I never had so much pain getting my teeth pulled in my whole life. I dont believe he was numbing up the right spots, and he needs to go back to school to learn the proper techniques, I was also overloaded on injections, my gums were also bleeding for hours.
I got my last tooth removed for braces at my original family dentist. It was very quick and precise my extraction spot only bled for a few minutes. Im warning you guys to stay away, I wouldnt recommend uncertified dental assistants ruining your mouth at this place. Dr Cheung have his lil worker bees do all the work.

Months later after braces removal I still have gaps between my teeth, this is such a scam, and given a cheap plastic retainer which eventually broke.
I should of never listened to my friend who referred me to him for braces.

Well I hate to be the lone wolf around here! Sorry to hear that my fellow Unilocalers have had such a terrible time there. I have no complaints with this place, but I must tell you:
1) I’ve never seen Dr. Cheung in my 5 years of going to this dentist… always saw the dental hygienist.
2) Never had any major complications with my teeth…
So having said that I’m thanking God for good genes cuz it sounds like a I narrowly escaped a potentially rotten experience.
Yikes!

Terrible dentist. Here’s my list of things awry with this guy:
1) This guy talks about inappropriate stuff with his assistants while working on me.
2) While poking at my root canal, remarked at how difficult this digging was on his hand, sighed loudly, and continued digging at my root canal, oblivious to my pain.
3) Very rough. Pulls at your lips aggressively and rests tools on your face and chest. I ended up with a minor cut on the inside of my mouth.
4) Shoddy work. My whole family came here 4 years ago and crowns have already fallen off.
I will never return.

Don’t bother ever seeing this dentist unless you want to see terrible service in action. I only went because the insurance assigned me to his practice. He kept me waiting an hour, then his hygenist gave me xrays badly, and left me with cuts in the back of my mouth. Ow!
When he finally came in, he mumbled at his papers, then looked in my mouth for no more than 3 minutes. He told me I had 17 cavities, and when I expressed surprise he pointed to the discoloration on my teeth. Well, my teeth have been discolored for over 10 years, and it’s only been 2 since I’ve seen a dentist — this is utter bullshit, and he obviously is just trying to screw patients over for as much money as possible.
But that wasn’t the extent of his scammery – he then put some blue stain on my teeth, saying that would show me where the cavities were. Then he said if he could scrape the blue stain off, it was only plaque that needed cleaning, not a cavity. He started scraping, and it all started to come off. When he noticed that, he stopped and started pointing instead of scraping, saying it was all cavities. Then he raised my chair as if my appointment was over. I said, «Wait a minute, I came in for a cleaning.»
«Oh you have to make another appointment for that.»
I wish I’d read all the other terrible reviews before going to waste my time in cheung’s chair.

I had a horrible experience with my orthodontia services. I had my braces on for 3.5 yrs and got them off 6 mths ago. Now, my mouth can’t close properly because he made the top and bottom row of teeth too close together. They bang against each other. So when I have to close my mouth, I have to make an effort to adjust my lower jaw inward so that my mouth can completely close. His suggested solution which we implemented several but with unsuccessful results was to continually shave down the lower front teeth (make them smaller). We did several iterations of this and my bottom front teeth are friggin too small now, AND I have the same issue of not being able to close my mouth properly. He made things worse! He could’ve just readjusted the braces so that my mouth had more space. Instead, he chose the quick, short-​term, cheaper solution for him. Now, I have to go in to see another orthondist to fix what he messed up.
Dr. Cheung also gave me a laminated sheet and said I needed to replace my mercury filling. He also said that my tooth was already cracked because of the mercury filling. Then I got a second opinion from another doctor. This other doctor had a completely different assessment. The other doctor said my tooth was NOT cracked, and he recommended that I NOT replace the mercury filling. There has been no conclusive evidence that mercury fillings are bad for your health, the filling I already had was in fine shape, and I did not need to replace. I’m happy I got a second opinion. I never replaced the filling, and to this point, it’s fine. Dr. Cheung just tries to screw you over and get your money. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DOCTOR!

That star don’t mean shit: Cheung is the worst dentist I have ever met. First reviewer, you got off light. This dude screwed me for at least a grand, and I was in pain for weeks while he said I had to adjust to a filling he gave me. I NEEDED A ROOT CANAL. All the ‘work’ he did had to be redone. I was in no condition then to run through the hoops to fight to get my money back and yeah, I’m still sore. I second the whole notion that «you suck.» I hope this review and hers saves someone from what I went through.

During my appointment with Dr. Cheung I was given a laminated sheet (that apparently is given to everyone) warning of mercury in fillings and how fillings decompose and pose a health threat. Of course, I was told I should schedule an appointment with Dr. Cheung to have these replaced.
My bullshit meter hit «dangerously high» since no other dentist had recommended this in the past. As a result I spoke with the father of one of my closest friends who happens to be a dentist. He agreed that the mercury risk is nonexistent and that it was complete bullshit and I should see another dentist.
During my visit with Dr. Cheung he had told me that it looked like one of my teeth had a cavity and I would need to have it filled. My friend’s dad had me bring him the x-​ray. (I made an extra unnecessary trip to Dr. Cheung’s office to get it because they closed early even though I was assured they’d be open). My friend’s dad looked at the x-​ray and told me it was completely inconclusive and I probably didn’t have a cavity. No other dentist has mentioned this tooth in the last four years so it looks like no cavity, Dr. Cheung. And, might I add, you suck.
