This park was built to commemorate the section of the freeway that collapesed in the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989. On the retaining wall to the west side of the park there’s a seismic fingerprint of the earthquake. The ground that was buckled under the force of the earthquake has aslo not been tilled, but is left in its natural state covered in grass. It’s a neat park, but it’s not perfect: It could use some covered areas. Because of the location and the absence of trees the whole place gets baking hot. It could use a restroom too, and some places to sit– maybe a few tables. It’s been taken over by a homeless population with mental and chemical dependency issues. While I feel for these individuals, their presence here makes me worry for my own safety, brings hygiene issues to the forefront, and pretty much makes the park an unpleasant place for the rest of the population.

This park is about the 1989 earthquake that brought down a section of the Cypress Freeway, making disarray of the vehicles on both levels of the structure and immediately ending over 40 lives. It’s also about the neighboring people and communities. This simple and somewhat barren park mainly features grass and trees navigated by a few walkways. Since it’s in memory of something that collapsed, I’m in a sense thankful for its lack of man-made structures.
