Needed to satisfy a major sushi fix and Geta was the perfect solution. The place is tiny, but I like how cozy and authentic it felt. If you don’t feel like waiting in line, get there before peak time or order food to go, which a lot of people seemed to be doing. The prices at Geta are definitely hard to beat, especially for its quality. Because of this, my boyfriend and I went all out with ordering: california roll(with real crab meat), spicy tuna roll, ikura, baked scallop roll, 49ers roll, and a side order of katsu. As the waitress was walking away I whispered«don’t judge us!» Okay, maybe we ordered one roll too much… but we finished everything on the table with very happy bellies. I wish I lived closer to the area so I could come back more often but thankfully it’s not too far of a drive. Piedmont folks, please take advantage of this gem of a place!

Geta is a a place where you can get affordable prices sushi, AND still have good quality fish. I’ve been here a couple of times. It’s a small little place, and there is always always a line. In fact, they can get so busy that they stop taking names down and have non guaranteed waiting. This time around, I got seated fast(mainly because folks before me got tired of waiting). Took a long time to look and decide what to get, there are many options, and they also have daily specials which differs from the menu. I ordered the spicy tuna roll, white tuna nigiri and hamachi nigiri. They had a special that day for hamachi belly, but they ran out! Also for an appetizer ordered the grilled octopus. The sushi was good, the octopus was fantastic. You’ll just have to try it for yourself. As an extra bonus, the alcohol is hella cheap. So drink up, take your time!

The price is right, but the quality did not live up to the hype for me. I’d give 3.5 stars if I could. Maybe it’s because I got take out, but the fish on the rolls were not as high quality as I was expecting. Here’s what I got: Spicy Tuna Roll(with added crispy) — this was the one I liked most because I liked that the tuna was kept intact rather than smashed and the spicy sauce was just drizzled on top Rainbow roll — size was great, but the fish quality was decent Dragon roll — again, size was great, this was better than rainbow in my opinion Lion King Roll — saw this on one Unilocal and ordered it because it seemed popular. Didn’t like the cooked fish too much(salmon, I think it was?) Overall, I say if you’re looking for a cheaper takeout option go here, but can’t speak to the quality of the nigiri or sit down experience yet!

Definitely check this place out if you happen to be in the area. The seating area is kind of small, so be early or you’ll be waiting. The rolls here are extremely cheap, around $ 5 a roll and taste the same and are as big as places that charge $ 10-$ 15 a roll. On top of that the service is very friendly. Lastly, they gave us free strawberry Pocky after which was a nice touch.

FOOD: Geta has gotten more and more expensive over the years. It used to be extremely cheap for mediocre sushi. But now it’s average sushi for average price. I feel that the sushi rolls are really plain unless you dip soy sauce. The restaurant is also really really small! People who usually come here mostly take their food out and eat elsewhere. As far as freshness goes, I do believe that their ingredients are all fresh! The place does get packed really fast because it’s so small, so come early to snatch a table! SERVICE: Service isn’t the best. Because this is such a small restaurant, the workers there get frustrated trying to walk through the restaurant. Fast paced workers, but sometimes are too fast and don’t want to interact other than to order and pick up. PARKING: Meter parking & there is a meter parking lot right next to Geta. Can be difficult during lunch and dinner time! So do come early.

Decent quality sushi for budget friendly prices. I almost always do take-out for lunch, but recently dined in for dinner. We got there around 5:45 and waited about 15 minutes for a table for 2. We didn’t get constant attention from the staff, but they work their butts off because that place is so damn busy, and it’s not hard to get their attention if you want to order more or get the check. I would definitely suggest calling in your order if you don’t want to wait for a table or wait for your to-go food. I will absolutely get sushi from Geta again!

The best, most authentic, and cheapest sushi restaurant in the area by far. Be prepared for long waits because the place is tiny but trust me, it’s worth it. Once you get seated, the service is super fast. This isn’t the place where you can have a romantic dinner and take your sweet sweet time. Skip the rolls, get the sashimi and nigiri. This is where the mouthfeel is capitalized. If you’ve never tried raw fish, this is your chance! The sashimi combo is my go to here. The owner is an absolutely adorable ojisan who is so smiley and kind! TIP: If you don’t want to wait, call ahead for take out. They are lightning fast(the bottleneck is the seating!)

Geta has been on my to-eat list for a minute. It was a lot more casual than I expected. The name«geta» means wooden slipper in Japanese, so I imagined that the food and décor would be delicate and fine like a woman’s shoe. The ambiance was more like a rubber flip-flop – easy, come-as-you-are. Price: Very affordable! Service: Fast and no frills! Food: California roll was adequate. I’d skip the crunchy CA roll and just get the regular kind next time. Tempura udon: Broth was light and savory; noodles, chubby and filling. Tempura: 2 shrimps and some veggies. A bit oily so just pat down with a napkin. Parking: Large metered lot and street.

not sure what happened to my frist review so here it is again. Geta is delish and cheap. It’s worth the wait which for the past few times that I have been here has been about 25 – 30 mins or so. The menu isn’t that extensive but it has nigiri, rolls, huge bowls of don and Udons. I went here today in fact and waited about 20 mins which we signed our name up at 5:55. I’m also not sure if its the holidays, but around 6:45 the crowd died down and they had no wait and actually had empty seats. For the price you pay, the portions are huge. Sashimi Combo — For $ 15, you get 4 types of fish — sake, tuna, hamachi, shrinmp — all cuts were a good size and very fresh Sashimi salad — totally bang for your buck and less than $ 10 — you get avocado and seaweed salad with greens. Nigiri — I have gotten unagi, sake, and sake nirigi — all great portions and fresh they also do to go if you don’ot want to wait for a table.

I talk a lot in my ratings about the ‘tiering’ of restaurants. There are intuitively different standards by which you have to judge places. It’s not apples-to-apples. Geta is awesome because it’s such a dingy hole in the wall literally smaller than my bedroom. The food is super affordable and tastes pretty good — not amazing, not the best Japanese I’ve had(grew up with a Japanese mother, that bar was way high) and not a good place for a romantic date. I ordered it take-out and 3 peoples’ orders were ready in 15 minutes and it ran us $ 16 for a teriyaki chicken entrée with all the extras(salad, yakisoba, miso) and a special roll order(8 piece rolls running like $ 5 or $ 6). It was a ton of pretty solid food for the price — that’s where 5 stars comes from. Value is hard to beat.

Geta is a really small restaurant that only fits about 15 people at a time, so if you don’t get there as soon as it opens, expect to be waiting a long time before being seated. The good news though is that service is incredibly quick, and we were able to finish our meal in less than 45 minutes, and we each ordered multiple items. Spider Roll: This roll has shrimp tempura and lettuce inside the roll and nothing on the top of the roll. I personally found the lettuce to be a little odd and the roll wasn’t super tasty, so I wouldn’t recommend this roll. Lion King Roll: This roll has crab meat inside the roll and salmon outside the roll with a flavorful sauce on top, and the whole roll is baked. The lion king roll is my favorite sushi roll to order, because I am a fan of baked rolls that are packed with flavor. This roll met my high expectations for what a great lion king roll tastes like because the salmon was fresh and the sauce was incredibly flavorful, having a Parmesan taste to it. I definitely want to come back to Geta to try out their other sushi rolls, but there are some aspects to the restaurant that need to be improved on. The place is incredibly small and cramped, and unless they think about expanding, this doesn’t like look something that can be improved easily. However, the restaurant does not have a comprehensive menu, with many menu items taped on the walls or on the blackboard that has specials, and it makes you wonder if you may have missed something. I almost missed out on the Lion King roll because it was listed on one of the papers posted on the wall and not on the laminated menus — consolidating the menu is an easy fix and one that would greatly benefit the restaurant.

Overall, I think Geta is a great value sushi restaurant. It satisfies my raw fish craving without breaking the bank. While the fish is no where near tsukiji level, I thought everything tasted very fresh. I like that two pieces of uni nigiri only costs $ 7 dollars(other nigiris run around $ 3 – 4 for two pieces). Their assortment is not that extensive but they have the basics — salmon, tuna, ikura, tomago… The hot foods are also delicious! The portions are a bit small but you seriously can’t beat the price. Try the katsu curry if you want something more filling. I prefer ordering to-go since the restaurant is cramped and can get very busy. The service is not as attentive as I’d like but they do try their best.

If you want to eat here, make sure you get there as soon as the door opens. With only a few tables and a handful of counter seats, it can get really packed. We were the 2nd party and decided on counter seats. Glad we did because it’s always pretty cool to talk to the sushi guys and get some insight on what they recommend for the day. We ordered assorted nigiri items ranging from amaebi to toro to amberjack. I really liked how our sushi chef placed our nigiri on a plate in a specific order. He asked us to start with the first row and work our way back. The fish was pretty fresh although not the best quality I have ever had. The rice needed a little more vinegar but cooked well, nonetheless. I did think that the fish was cut way too small and thin. We asked for a couple of recommendations on a roll and he made us negihama. I appreciated the simple maki but was expecting something a little more complex. Still good anyhoo. The waitresses were a little slow with tea and water refills. With 3 of them in a small restaurant, I was hoping they’d be a little more on top of things. It was easy to get their attention though when we did need something. Our tab was around $ 70 but we left a little hungry still. Street parking. Really nice sushi chefs. 3 stars.

Had dinner last night. For a Saturday night they closed very early(8:30pm). We were the last people to be seated. We ordered a lot of stuff. Shrimp and veggie tempura, hamachi nigiri, uni nigiri, unagi nigiri, dragon roll and lion king roll. The dragon roll was my favorite– it melted in my mouth. I actually absolutely loved everything. The staff was friendly and efficient. But I got severe stomach pain, cramping, nausea and vomiting. I am giving them the benefit of doubt though as I have been eating out a lot this week/weekend. So I will cut only one star. I really hope the gastrointestinal infection isn’t due to geta, as I really want to become a regular here!

Delicious sushi for a delicious price! There was a slight wait because we got there near the beginning of dinner rush, around 5:30pm, but we were seated within half an hour. This is a small, hole-in-the-wall-esque place, so seating is very limited and it may feel stuffy at times. We ordered the spicy tuna, salmon skin, and spider rolls, as well as the katsu curry rice. I wasn’t a huge fan of the curry because it was pretty generic and served lukewarm. But the sushi was amazing! Plenty of filling, not too much rice, just the way I like it. The spider roll was definitely my favorite by far — crispy on the inside, didn’t fall apart after just one bite. Service was also really good. They kept checking on us regularly and refilling our drinks. The food also came out fairly quickly, given that it was dinner rush. The price makes this one a no-brainer. I’ll definitely be back after another long day at work.

If someone asks me to get sushi, I can never say no to that. I’m a huge fan of rolls with raw fish and I could eat it a couple times a week and never get sick of it. If I don’t have sushi at least once a week, I will begin to crave it badly. Since Geta was nearby, I decided to go and wait for a table and there’s usually a line outside so if you come with more than two people it’s a lot longer since the establishment is quite small. The menu is quite limited and they have so many pieces of paper posted all over the walls about their«new» items which I’ve seen for so long. They really should update their menu so I don’t have to look all over to try and pick. I don’t see why people find this sushi restaurant so great besides the cheap prices. The fish on top of most rolls are small so you get what you pay for. I’d rather pay more to have huge slabs of fish on top of the rolls so I don’t have to fill up on carbs from all the rice. I’ve tried almost all the rolls here and none of them really blew my mind. Due to the location, I’ll probably be back.

I’ve had a hankering for sushi for the last few weeks now, so when I planned to have dinner with a girl friend, I asked her to recommend her go-to sushi joint, and that’s when I was introduced to Geta. Cute little spot, that has an incredible following. Even before the small restaurant opened, there was already a half dozen or so people waiting in line. As soon as everyone was seated, there was another wave of people who walked in to place take out orders So although Geta is a sushi joint, they have many non-sushi items on their menu. I feel like I’ve had a hard time finding great sushi around the Bay Area, and this is now a top choice for me. The fish is incredibly fresh, their rice is well made, and there’s a great selection on their menu! Looking forward to going back!

Too many reviews, how do I stand out? What do I talk about, the fish? It’s fresh! The price? It’s stupid cheap! The service? Meh, the place is tiny and they’re popular, you know what that means. I used to come here when I was younger because my parents knew the owner. My dad would rave about how this place was a hole-in-the-wall, but I didn’t care, I just wanted food. By the time I grew up and started using Unilocal, everyone kept asking me if I’ve been to Geta. I’d always reply, «What the heck is Geta?», «Ah, it’s sushi, I don’t think I’ve tried it before but I’ll let you know when I do». Funny how things turn out huh? If this is your first time, I highly recommend coming there before they open. It’s hard to be seated immediately if you don’t. The fish is amazing so if you’re a fan of sashimi, definitely take a look at the post-its they have stuck to the walls, those are your golden tickets to food heaven. If sashimi isn’t your style, I definitely recommend the bento boxes, they’re yummy and will fill you up. I’m happy that this place is still alive and kicking and I’m happy that Unilocal has made this place super popular. Too bad I have to wait in a line now :[

My two favorite combinations. Sushi + Cheap It’s small but service goes by fast. And with their pricing… You can’t beat it. Makes me feel like all sushi places should follow their pricing. As for the food — Lunch *Teriyaki chicken combo — teriyaki chicken over rice, also had to get the Shrimp Tempura along with the Miso soup. All together for a great price. $ 9.50. The teriyaki was alright. I didn’t think ill be ordering this again, but the tempura came with 2 pieces of shrimp and tempura veggies. That alone was $ 7, and with the combo it also came with a miso soup and a salad. So for an extra 2.50 to make it a combination for all that food, it’s a no brainer. *Rainbow Roll — the fish is fresh, so if I were to order just sashimi, it wouldn’t disappoint. And the ca roll was as good as it gets. I can just be happy with ca rolls from here. The inside is really small, so don’t try and bring a big party with you and dine in. Luckily the share a parking lot with CVS, so you don’t have to resort to just street parking. However you will have to pay for parking in the lot, they have someone constantly checking your dashboards. If I’m ever in the area, lunch here is always going to be a strong consideration. They have a simple formula here and they’ve been running with it successfully for years. Overall this small sushi spot has exactly everything you and your wallet want in a sushi restaurant. #GottaGetaRoll
