Great little boutique. Definitely worth a stop in just to browse all the different merchandise. From jewelry to bags to home décor, cards, and kid toys, there was a lot to take in. Would be a great spot if you’re looking to buy a friend or friend’s baby a unique gift. They have an eco-friendly twist to them so there were quite a few items where something beautiful was made from a recycled product such as bags made out of old bike tubes or soda can tops. They have products for sale at all different price points but it’s a boutique so prices err on the higher side. It would be very easy to splurge here but they are definitely selling stuff you can’t find just anywhere. I had my eyes on some pretty earrings from Sobral that were sourced from Brazil. The lady working the boutique kind of leaves you to your own devices but was friendly enough when I asked where the earrings were from.

Such a GREAT gift shop!!! For a twenty spot you can buy a one-of-a-kind, hand made(many by local artisans), up cycled gift and an artsy/funny original card. Ok, bring an extra 10 for something deliciously smelling for yourself(lotion, room fragrance etc.) The BEST part, you don’t get an arrogant vibe from the salespeople. So many times I get turned off by the people who work in gift shops, you know?

I visited the new store in Rockridge. This store has some cute upcycled items, like wallets made out of tires and a key chain made out of bicycle chain. But largely stuff that no one actually needs. I guess it is better to make useless items out of garbage than to make them out of new material, but why bother? The worst part of the store is the stench when you walk in. They have bath salts and lotions with an overwhelming and obnoxious odor. I think it was all upcycled from chemical toilets. It was very difficult being in the store because of the smell. There is a very similar store on College Ave in Berkeley with similar items. It has little odor and a much larger variety of things to choose from. It is called Treehouse Green Gifts. I recommend that one.

Love Hatch! Every time I shop here I consistently get the most incredible echo gifts(even ones for me). This is my absolute go-to place for gifts.

Absolutely adore this place! Purchased one of their eco-handbags almost 2 years ago and it’s still in excellent quality condition. Hatch is a gem of Montclair Village.

Hatch is a beautiful little store that I’m happy I discovered. Compared to all the other boutiques in Montclair Village, this is the only one really worth visiting as it’s merchandising mix is as unique as the designers and products it carries. I work in fashion, I know a good store when I see one. Price, originality and quality of goods is top notch and I’ll definitely be back next time I visit. Lovely sales staff and great location next to a tea shop called Sophia’s Cuppa Tea(stop in, get gluten-free bread).

Hatch has been a consistent go-to for me for years. I’m particularly fond of their purse/messenger bag/wallet offerings from all kinds of recycled/upcycled materials. But there’s never a shortage of home items to ponder either. I’ve even bought a birthday gift for a tween here… I mean come on, this IS the bay area after all, and our young’uns love them some eco-gifting. Customer service is excellent — hubby bought me a belt and it wasn’t the right size, so they worked hard to get the belt for me since it wasn’t in stock. And for the littlest ones they have a bunch of lunch box options, some simple toys(reminds me of Back to Basics Toys before they were bought by Amazon. Ah, the good ol’ days… wait…what you mean that was just the 90’s? Sigh), and other stuff I don’t pay attention to because my kids aren’t that age anymore LOL. Anyway, my rambling point is that I shop for myself and for a huge range of ages for gifts.

Absolutely love this store. Had never been in it before up until a couple of months ago. It’s pricey, but I’m happy to see so much of what they’re selling is local. It’s wonderful for finding interesting things to put around your house, strange but quirky jewelry, or gifts that nobody could be disappointed with. Regarding the one reviewer who gave it one star? Your review is based on a bag that costs ten cents. Whether or not this is something they’re required to do, you’re really going to put down a single star and yet call it a «great store»? Contrary to what people voted your opinion as, that’s far from«useful» or «cool», it’s just ridiculous. Ten cents, either get over it, don’t shop there, or ask why it costs money. Maybe they’re not required to, but are trying to perpetuate the notion of not letting bags go to waste. Regarding the eco-friendly and local atmosphere, I’ve actually talked a few times to someone who hangs out at the coffee shops in right near the store, and found out that his work is regularly displayed in store. I think it’s awesome that Hatch puts such an emphasis on trying to put local artists forward. They produce some really interesting products, and it’s great for the community. So, like I said. Hatch is a little(or so) on the expensive side, but if you’re looking for gifts or fun things to wear or put in your house, give them a look through. They’re pretty good about changing up their inventory fairly often, so it’s always fun to pop in and see what’s new.

The review below must be from out of town and not know what she is talking about! ALL stores must charge 10 cents for bags, and it’s the law. Every store does that in here! If you don’t want to pay the 10 cents then you need to bring your own reusable shopping bag. This store has so many unique items especially eco friendly items. It’s one of my most favorite shops in Oakland!

Great store, recycled goods often used in product line. BUT, they kindly offer to give you a nice cardboard gift box and then charge 10 cents for a small paper bag. They say they are in compliance with the new Alameda County law banning plastic bags, however that law applies to stores that sell groceries and other food items. This is not a food related store. Also given the recycle nature of this store I would not think it would take a County wide regulation to encourage them to avoid plastic bags. Finally, they are not required to charge the customer personally for the bag, they can absorb the 10 cents and at the price point of this store I think it would be manageable for them.

I’m willing to change my mind about Hatch because the offerings in the store are so great. Eco-minded, unique and made with care. I walked into Hatch today ready to drop some serious cash on a wedding gift for some close friends. I wasn’t anticipating on shopping at this store because I was just stopping by the bike shop close by, but the window display lured me in and thought I’d skip the trip to Urban Indigo and check this place out instead. As I walked in, I was expecting the usual friendly store clerk greeting but was only met with blaring Matchbox 20. The clerk had her head down and seemed to not notice me. I browsed around a bit seeing so many potential unique gifts. I made my way to the front to check out some of the jewelry, again, expecting the clerk to acknowledge me this time since I was mere inches away from her, but still! Nothing! I felt almost like I was Julia Roberts being ignored in the bougey clothing store. For me, customer service is the most important experience when I’m choosing where to spend my money. I could be at some dime store looking at cheap chatskis and will feel more inclined to patronize the business if the clerk is friendly. While Hatch had some great stuff, I’d much rather try my luck on a different day than give this cold girl my hard earned cash. Or just drive over to Urban Indigo where people are friendly and helpful. I quickly finished my tour of the store, then walked to the exit waving bye and saying«thanks!». The woman finally raised her head and gave me a look that indicated that while she was acknowledging my presence, she couldn’t care if I was the Queen of England.

Like the first reviewer I am totally in love with that store. All their items are super unique along the lines of eco-friendly products. They have all kinds of stuff there from home décor to personal beauty to kid toys. The best part is that they sell a lot of eco-friendly items.
