Really bad indian food. Very cheap watery sauces and chutney for popadum. Didn’t like the vibe of the guy that seated us he was short with us and rude. I wish there was a decent indian restaurant in the area it’s my favorite type of food.

I have been here for dinner a bunch of times now, and they always have something interesting. I always wanted to try bittermelon, because it it so healthy. I found it here and now I am a fan. I love the goat, and everything else on the special menu has always been good. Plus they are so friendly and always take time to answer the many questions I have about the specials. It is definitely my favorite indian food in Oakland.

got there late. chai tasted off, and the chicken also tasted off. Plus one for the nice service though.

Good prices, endless rice refills. Decent food. This place is definitely 4 stars. Everyone that is all like, «eek! rats!» needs to calm down. I didn’t see any rats when I was here, only well-priced indian food with a strange but nice outdoor eating area.

I love this place. I come here multiple times a week, for multiple reasons. Price, excellent, doesn’t break the bank. Fresh food, healthy. They have a vegatarian and vegan menu which is great, I will occasionally eat meats but prefere vegatarian or vegan. When I have eaten the chicken and lamb here they were excellent. While you are waiting for you food, to go, you may drink some of their Chai tea, complementary. I tell you it is fresh made and excellent. At times there is a soup present which you can also try complimentary, and it too is excellent. The owner is a very friendly, kind man. He is also the main chef, and does a beautiful job with the food and spices. If I were Siskel and Egbert I would give this place a two thumbs up. I will return with no hesitance.

Dislike! We ordered delivery from this place the day we moved into our Piedmont Ave area apartment and were sorely disappointed! We ordered lamb curry, palak paneer, naan, and vegetable somosas. The lamb was gross and its curry was both flavorless and very greasy. The palak paneer tasted bland. The naan was really crispy and thin. The vegetable somosas were decent, though. While eating this highly underwhelming meal, I had a flashback to the time when I tried their chicken tikka masala at their College Ave location. That was bad too – thin and bland curry. Delivery took 1 hr 20 min. No thank you, House of Curries!

This has become my favorite inexpensive Indian restaurant in Oakland. The food is fresh, cheap and delicious. The palak paneer is so tasty. I loved the curry chicken too. It’s creamy and yummy. The atmosphere inside is only so so, but the patio out back is charming and they have heaters so you can sit there any day or night. The guys who run the place are so friendly and generous. They almost pay YOU to eat there. If you ask, they might just pull out the tabla drums and entertain you while you eat. Soup and chai are on the house.

I walked in around 4:30 in the afternoon craving for some authentic Indian food. Looks like a legit hole in the wall place from the outside… Glanced in there, no one in sight because the restaurant’s layout is a bit weird. The workers are hidden behind a wall until you reach the back. Decided to take my chances. Looked at the menu… My favorite Indian dish is chicken tikka masala, so course that! Naan, an order of vegetarian Samosa and mango lassi! They also had a bunch of delicious looking items… lamb briyani… mmM. After ordering my to-go items from the cashier he told me that there were complimentary corn soup and Chai tea! I was like wha??? Score! So I scooped me some hot corn soup while I waited for my food. Taste similar to hot and sour soup but a hint of sweet from the corn, it was delicious! The cashier(which I believe may have been the owner) came by with my mango lassi and asked me how my soup was. It was yummy of course! He even told me to get more! I would have if I wasn’t trying to save room & super anxious to try my chicken tikka masala. When I finished my soup my food was ready! He gave me chutney, tamarind and mint… and along I went. I tried the mango lassi, delicious! Creamy! Sour sweet. It was like dessert with my meal. The samosa with the tamarind and mint really hit the spot! Chicken tikka masala was so yummy! Wasn’t overly salty like some other places I had it, creamy, plenty of chicken chunks and they gave me tons of naan. I am definitely coming back for more whenever I’m in Oakland! Customer service: awesome! Did I mention free wifi? Food: delicious so far and not pricey…

Dinner on a Sat night and this place was not busy at all around 7:30 pm. The chicken tikka masala and naan were delish. Chicken tandoori took the longest and was so dry and overcooked that the knife couldn’t cut the edges. It was cooked to order as we were told it would take 20 min. The restaurant only had one table with four customers sitting down to eat that we could see so being busy couldn’t have been a reason to forget about chicken cooking. Aloo Palak — plain boiled potatoes and spinach mixed together. No flavor. Wouldn’t come back. Rather try another Indian restaurant. A party was walking in as we ordered and they joked about bringing Indian food to an Indian restaurant. That should’ve been our sign.

I ordered delivery via foodler today. it took them over 3 hours to deliver. upon delivery, the driver claimed that it never took him this long to deliver before and that my address wasn’t on the map. i know full well that my address is, in fact, on several maps. when i got down to eating. i ordered 3 curries: daal, aloo ghobi, and mixed vegetables, as well as 2 appetizers: veg pakora and veg samosa. Not only was all the food luke warm at its hottest but most of it was incredibly bland. the curries were surprisingly flavorless and the pakora was like eating cardboard. however the samosas were actually pretty good. ultimately, combined with their abysmal service and lousy food, house of curries gets a gold star! …only one.

Haven’t had a chance to draft a review but two weeks ago, while waiting for our food, I spotted a dark figure from the corner of my eye. I thought it was a crumpled piece of trash but found it attached to a tail. It was a dead mouse under a table. We promptly requested our money back and was refunded. I hate posting such a negative review but since his place is self-service, I feel that the restaurant should do a better job of maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the dining area. Yes. Eek, a mouse.

The boyfriend and I woke up late on a sunny Sunday and felt like something other than the usual pancakes, eggs and bacon brunch options. We had noticed the week before that an Indian Restaurant had moved into the old Caribbean food location and knew that they would have a nice patio. So off on our bikes we went up to Piedmont Avenue! I was halfway through reading the menu when the owner popped his head out of the kitchen to greet us warmly and point out his specials. We narrowed it down to a spicy chicken curry and an eggplant dish. I wish we could have ordered the Lahore-style fish, but I figured we would explode from too much food, especially since House of Curries offers complimentary soup and chai. Here is the food breakdown: — The chicken was incredibly flavorful with really vivid cumin seed flavor. — The eggplant was cooked perfectly. Tender, juicy but with its structure still intact. Not a trace of bitterness. — OMG. The naan. Seriously? Fluffy, sweet, crispy on the edges. Um. It was the best naan I have ever eaten. Honestly, I don’t know what made the inner soft bits taste so creamy, but if naan ALWAYS tasted like this, I would weight 600 lbs. Be prepared to go and sip some chai and enjoy the patio. Food will arrive only after it has been prepared from scratch from whole ingredients. The extra time is so SO worth it. I really want to see this place packed the next time I visit. The better their business does, the sooner they can redecorate the patio to match the delicious food.

Average food, bordering on bland. We walked in and were told that the heating element that keeps the buffet table food hot, was broken, so we could eat the luke warm food or have to order off the menu. When I mentioned that they ought to be careful because food that is improperly warmed can cause foodborne illness, I was laughed off. Take ur money to PakWan in Hayward or Favorite Indian Restaurant.

This place looks like a little hole in the wall but they actually have a lot of room — including a nice covered back patio area. The atmosphere is very friendly, specials are posted up on the wall, and rice, soup, and Chai tea to go with whatever you order are free and self serve. The owner/head Chef made it very clear the first time I came in that if I didn’t like my food he wouldn’t let me pay. With a garauntee like that, it should come as no suprise that the food is delicious. The Naan is light, hot out of the oven, and just slightly yeasty. As for entrees, the first time I was here I had a chicken curry and this time i got the chicken tikka masala, both were excellent, some of the best Indian/Pakistani food I’ve had in recent memory. This is officially my favorite spot for Indian food as of now, totally worth the detour through Oakland on the way home from work.

I completely regret eating here. I can’t speak on behalf of the entrees, but the lunch buffet was so bad I had to stop eating entirely and leave. I’m especially disappointed because I knew what I wanted, but the guy in charge indicated that I would have to pay for the rice(a la carte). So I got suckered into the buffet which was horrendous, especially for a vegetarian. Even my friend who ate with me who eats meat didn’t like their buffet offerings. I would avoid this place, especially if you’re used to great Indian food at low budget, fair prices. Do yourself a favor — try the other restaurants in the area. If you have a taste for Indian, this place would probably ruin it.

As of late, I have become obsessed with Indian food. I stumbled upon this place and it is my new favorite spot. I can’t even tell you what I ordered here. Chicken, shrimp, veggies… it was all so good. I inhaled it as soon as it came. I am pretty sure everything here is amazing. The one thing I have to say is that the samosas didn’t come with any sauce/chutney. I was sort of disappointed by that. But the food was excellent. This place is probably best for take out, as the interior leaves a lot to be desired. Don’t take a date here. If the décor doesn’t throw you off, the awkward layout and bad music will. But you will probably be too busy stuffing your face to care. I cannot wait for the one to open on Grand because I can walk to that one. They said it should be open in a month. I might throw a party.

Holy spicy palak paneer, Batman! Still tasty though, and both the paneer & naan were really fresh. Just wish I’d known how spicy the food was ahead of time. I feel like my taste buds were far too singed to enjoy the paneer & flavor of the curry. Bonus points for having free wireless!

Terrific Indian food. Large portions. I had palak paneer and naan. Both were really good. The Cardamon tea is free and kept full. Although décor is minimal the place has great atmosphere — good music, cheerful owner and staff.

Let me first say that I love food from southeast Asia and make it a point to sample as many of the highly rated spots on Unilocal as I can. I live in the East Bay and always assumed good Indian/Pakistani food would require a short drive to Berkeley that was until I saw the first review for House of Curries and decided to make a visit to the location on Piedmont avenue in Oakland. I’m so glad I did as I absolutely love this place and it has quickly become my favorite Indian restaurant in the entire Bay Area. The Chef(Abbasi) is from Pakistan and takes immense pride in his new restaurant(open 2 months) and is personally involved in all facets of preparation including grinding his own spices, shopping for fresh ingredients and cooking all the dishes with great care. As this is my new guilty pleasure, I have already been to House of Curries three times over the last two weeks and have made it a point to try several new dishes on each visit. My favorite dish thus far is the Chicken Karahi which is a unique recipe from Pakistan that is essentially a chicken stirfry fry with fresh tomatoes, ginger, chili and amazing spices all cooked in a Pakistani Wok called a Karahi. In cooking circles, Karahi is considered a very difficult dish to prepare but Abbasi nails it and has created a signature dish for his restaurant. As the names implies, all the curries are exceptional and I also loved his Beef Nahiri which was an amazingly tender beef dish that requires nine hours of cooking to get t it just right and they do. My wife enjoys vegetarian dishes and makes sure we always get the Okra(Sada Bhindi) and the cauliflower and potato combination(Aloo Ghobi). We always order their Biriyani rice which is cooked perfectly and add some garlic nan to soak up all the sauces from the various dishes. Yum! I cannot recommend this new restaurant enough… I love it!

OMG! Or should I say OMGosht? Just found this place has set up shop near my Piedmont pad, and I am thrilled. I ordered Lamb Achar and asked for it spicy. Extra spicy please. Not«white people spicy, Indian spicy» And it was!!! Some of the hottest food I have had in years. And soooooo delicious – lamb flavorful and tender, beautifully balanced. Great naan(take a lesson, Breads of India, heretofore referred to as Dread of India) Fantastic raita. Wonderful.
