If ever there was a reason to ignore the police barricades and entourage blocking any obvious route to 80 anything and E14, this would be it. I will literally leave the comfort of home and chance my life with the flats for their catfish nuggets. The only complaint I have is that I can’t always finish which means I have to either share or waste my food. The homies(homeless) and the hoes make it an authentic hood spot, and the red and blue lights and symphonic sirens basically certify you… The bullet proof glass almost makes me wana make sure I come strapped! Over the top? Maybe :) lol I’m bay all the way and I was raised in Oakland. I wouldn’t dare call this a fish and chips, that annoys my existence. If you want some fried fish this is the spot, and if you’re lucky you might get a cheap date and a bootleg DVD to show her a good time. That’s a win all day.

They could do no wrong. Our order were taken politely and correctly. We dined in and the catfish was very good. The snapper was a close second. To avoid the«steamed fries» we ate in.

Fried Fish, and chicken wings. Yes. Please. Thanks mister man for frying everything perfectly. Thank you for not over seasoning and being light handed with the salt. Thanks for allowing me endless combo options for under $ 20 and providing beverage options that pair so well with my catfish and fries.(I.e. Grape soda, root beer and flavored lemonade) No alcohol here.(There is a corner store nearby) This is a chicken spot so don’t expect fancy seating, and try not to let the bullet proof glass in between you and the guys that work there. Do keep in mind having cash here is recommended but they do accept debit, no credit cards. There is ample seating so it’s definitely a spot for a group of fried foodies. Catfish Red snapper Alaskan Cod Calamari Tilapia Oysters Prawns Seafood gumbo Jambalaya French fries Red velvet cake Banana pudding Sweet potato cake(yes cake not pie) The list is almost endless Mostly I just want you to get your fried fish and chicken fix here!

I’ve been to other locations when out of the area(Stockton and Vallejo) and the food has always been good. I’ve only been to this location on 3 occasions and I have to say it’s the best one. I get AMAZING customer service here. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is the container makes my fries soggy(but they are so good, I still eat them!) My food is hot, there’s always something on the Telly to keep me occupied while I wait and there’s cake . I’m not big on fried foods until I’m in the area and I will stop here for the shrimp and chicken every time.

I am a bit perplexed as to how to start this review considering the mixed feelings I still have about this place. Upon finding the place, I was a little scared to get out of the car considering the surrounding conditions. While we were waiting for our order my sister informed me that a few prostitutes were ordering with us. Don’t get me wrong, I can get down with my hole-in-the-wall gems, but this is not one of them. The food was alright. Too much salt on some sides, and then not enough flavor on others. It is not somewhere you want to sit down and stay in. It is a place you want to get food to go. It was a little pricy considering the quality. I don’t think I will return because of the location and the fact that there is nothing exceptional about it.

Just ordered $ 50 in food for two people. The sides, macaroni and cheese/red beans and rice were not good at all. No flavor and just not worth a dime. I figured I could get a spaghetti instead since I’ve had that before. When I politely asked that my disgusting red beans and rice and macaroni and cheese be replaced with a spaghetti. I was treated like a hobo. The heavy set, middle eastern guy behind the counter had a pretty bad attitude about it. As if I were trying to con or get something for free. I have spent hundreds of dollars in this place and never asked for a handout. Any other place in Oakland would have replaced their disgusting food. Just goes to show that people get jaded and don’t think. A lifetime of my money thrown away for a two dollar spaghetti. Dumb… dumb…dumb. I will never spend another dollar in this establishment ever again! Smh. I could have gone ANYWHERE in Oakland and got a four star lunch with supreme customer service for $ 50.00. Next time, I will lunch at a place with more class.

My friend and I were walking on international towards the 50’s when we got hungry and looked for a place that sold soul food type of food. We stumbled across this place and decided to try it out. Long story short, the food is way overpriced, flavorless, and looks nothing like it does in the pictures on the menu. The lemonade was alright I guess. We should’ve just went to Fish King on 64th& International since we were walking that way anyway. Definitely don’t recommend this place.

I got the fried chicken and catfish combo with fries, I added the mac and cheese. The friend chicken was cooked to perfection, the catfish wasn’t lacking in flavor but I felt the breaded outside could have been a little more crispy.

Jj’s has been and will be one of my favorite fish and chicken places. I get the jumbo shrimp. They are huge and flavorful. Also got to get the hush puppies and frozen lemonade

Down home fried chicken, fish and shrimp as close to mom’s kitchen as you can get. The mac an cheese isn’t really worth it but the fries, and potatoe salad made up for it. You have to try ATLEAST one of the deserts as they have a HUGE selection. I usually go for the chocolate silk pie. yes!

The food is fresh and made to order. The menu has slightly changed from the first time I’ve visited but the food quality is still the same. The place is known for both it’s Fish and Chicken, thus the namesake. They have great desserts and icys as well. Not to mention other menu items, cray people in the surrounding area but doesn’t take from the service and quality meal you’ll get from JJ’s.

I have eaten here on several occasions and I ordered the same meal: Large jumbo prawns, 4 wings and red beans/rice The prawns and chicken are always cooked to perfection. The red beans and rice are so flavorful(with some hot sauce) and well cooked — without being soft and smashed up. My only issue is that the wheat bread should be placed in a separate zip bag in lieu of UNDER the fried foods, whereby the bread slices become hard and greasy This is just not the way to treat wheat But nonetheless, I love me some this — YUMMI… except for the fries(I HATE fries!!!)

Pretty disturbing(and I am an around they way girl) to enter a place for dinner and everyone is turned up! yelling obscenities at the employees. Just out of control. I have never seen so many security cameras in a soul food place before ! Dont go there after 5pm on a Friday night I’m just saying. Bring a crash helmet !

If you ask my child what she wants to eat, and tell her to pick this is what she’ll choose most of the time. She loves the fried chicken meal that comes with fries and bread and we always get the frozen lemonade. I always get the prawns.

I first had J J Fish and Chicken back in Chicago. It’s really nice to see a small business expand to semi-national(none on the East coast to my knowledge). The neighborhood is hella sketchy. Trust me, I live a block a way. However, the food is delicious. That is, when they actually have what you want. I ordered 4 thighs, a side of mac n cheese and a side of mushrooms. Originally I asked for their jambalaya but they were out. The wait can be long if you don’t call ahead. Luckily I had a book and«The Losers» was playing in the background. I came prepared to kill time. About 10 mins later the guy that took my order came out to inform me they were completely out of thighs so I had to settle for wings instead. I was too exhausted and hungry to ask for a refund. Regardless, THEMEALWASDELICIOUS. Along with the chicken I got 2 slices of bread and some tasty fries. Dinner, 4th meal, AND potentially breakfast! The mac n cheese was alright. The cheese to noodle ratio was off, with there being too much of the former. The wings were fried but not spicy and kinda bland. Luckily I have bomb ass hot sauce to splash on there so no complaints. Now on to the breakout star of the meal: the mushrooms. I have never had mushrooms fried in batter before. Think of popcorn shrimp, so the mushroom itself is steamed with a crispy outer layer. Now for the foolishness: someone’s ratchet rude ass grandma was definitely off her rocker. When you pay you’r.e given a thank you slip that has your number on it. I forgot to take mine with me when I sat down to wait. When they called out a number I began to get up to ask what was inside. This old lady, in a stank ass voice, repeated the number as she got up to get her meal. It wasn’t that deep. Pro tip: THEYONLYACCEPTCASH. They have a janky ATM in the lobby that I don’t trust. Random observation: This Southern soul food joint is run by Latinos. MULTICULTURALISMFORTHEWIN!

I got the jumbo shrimp/whole wings with fries and mac salad. the food was delish! I will definitely go back to try other items. I’m sad I didn’t get to try the dessert since I was full. They had sweat potatoe pie, red velvet, coconu cake, chocolate and more.

I happened to be in the area and stumbled upon this place. The neighborhood around it is a little sketchy and was eerily quiet for 8:30pm on a Thursday night. JJs has an off street parking lot, but with the exception of the closest 3 – 4 parking spots it is very dark. The inside of the place more or less resembles a fast food joint, though a bit nicer(and with bulletproof glass for the employees). Their menu is simple but big. For«individual» portions, there are about 12 types of fish and seafood that you can get in a small or large size. They also have chicken, wings, etc. I ordered a small red snapper and the guy at the counter was on top of his game and very nice. I got takeout and only had time to text my girlfriend a couple times and check the latest NCAA tourney scores(Stanford finally lost yay!) before I was summoned to retrieve my food. When I got home, my bag included: — three good sized fried snappers: tasty and flaky. the fish was moist and the breading not too heavy. — a lot of french fries: nicely seasoned, but as someone else said, the styrofoam container traps all the moisture which makes the fries a little soggy. nothing a few minutes in the toaster oven can’t fix though — a 2 oz container of coleslaw: I didn’t even see this at first because it was buried under the fries, but it is really good! Why don’t they give more?! — two slices of wheat bread: umm. what do I do with these? I’ll probably just use them for a homemade sandwich or something — 2 oz each of hot sauce, ketchup, and tartar sauce I was able to eat two of the snappers and about half the fries, before feeling full. Everything was good(solid 4-star food) and I’d definitely go back to try other things on the menu. I just wish they had some type of combo so I could try more than one type of fish at a time!
