Jason Fung, MD

My primary care doctor referred me to Jason Fung because I have a history of skin cancer. I called his office and left a message. No return call for 3 days. I called back and was told that he is no longer seeing new patients except if I am referred by my primary care doctor to see him, even though I have a PPO plan. I had the referral faxed to his office yesterday. Today I called to make an appointment and was told he is no longer taking new patients even with a referral. I explained that 3 days ago I was told to get the referral, which I did. She just kept repeating herself. I called my primary care doctor back and told her not to refer anyone to him again.

To echo the other posters, Dr. Fung is the bomb! Friendly, knowledgeable, thorough and respectful are only a few adjectives to describe him as an exemplary healer. Personal calls with results of tests and treatment suggestions are one example of his special touch– without a doubt the finest medical practitioner I have encountered.
Though I’ve relocated from the Bay area, I will be making the 1000 mile round trip for my complete cancer screenings from him, at least until I find someone as competent and engaged as him (not likely!) Helpful and organized staff.

Bad customer service.
It appears that Dr. Fung’s office does not have a receptionist. I never was able to reach a receptionist after more than 8+ calls within a span of 3 weeks. Also, I never received a call back even though I left several messages on his answer machine. I don’t recommend him to anyone for these reasons.

Dr. Fung is the best dermatologist. I have been seeing him for a number of years and always have a great experience.

I saw Dr. Fung based on a recommendation. Dr. Fung seems to like my company that he had me visit his office every 2 weeks for nearly 45 days before he decided to treat me. That was 4 visits with no progress. I was paying $ 50 every visit. and 100’s on medication (with insurance) and not getting treated, buying expensive medications every 2 weeks that could last me for years and yet to be changed every 2 weeks to a different medication. I had to stop the non-​stop experiment done on my face. It seems «This is strictly busine$$», and no moral values or concern for one’s problem.
Really really disappointed.

Dr. Fung is the best dermatologist. My husband and I both saw him, and we’re so sorry to have moved out of state. He has a natural and easy bed-​side-​manner and is a great all around, wonderful person. He cares about each paitent, and he treats the ‘whole’ paitent.

Was recommended here by my Doctor. I have to say the only reason I did not give this place 5 stars are 1. The older lady receptionist was pretty rude for whatever reason, even rolled her eyes at her co worker (another older lady) after I asked her a question. Made me feel pretty uncomfortable. 2. When Dr. Fung walked into the office he had Google glasses on which are known for recording, I don’t know if he was recording, but you would think the Dr. would ask if it was OK for him to wear them while in the office visit to make me feel comfortable for patient confidentiality purposes. Other than that I liked my visit with Dr. Fung, he was very personable, kind and addressed and explained any issues I had regarding my visit, he definitely knows his stuff. I can see why he is highly recommended.

The best dermatologist I have ever been to. Thorough, knowledgeable, super nice and highly skilled.
I am bummed that I had to switch to Kaiser. Just saw the dermatologist there. awful, slap dash, in a hurry, head was clearly some place else. I’m almost tempted to pay out of pocket to see him again!

Hard to get in, but terrific, he’s worth the effort! Goes the extra mile in a doubtful diagnosis, very careful.

Dr. Fung is a fantastic dermatologist. I started seeing him after going to another dermatologist for about a year. Compared to my last dermatologist, Dr. Fung is wayyy better. For one thing, he actually takes the time to really examine my skin. The last doctor I had would barely glance at my skin before she wrote me some random prescription that didn’t even work. I wasted a lot of time and money with the last doctor when I could have been seeing Dr. Fung instead.
Not only is he a great doctor though, he’s super nice and has great manners. He always gets bombarded with a bunch of questions by me but never seem to mind answering them, plus his explanations are always in depth and clear. I always come out with a better understanding of why my skin acts the way it does and what I can do to combat the problem. Another thing I like is that you never feel rushed with him, like you would with a lot of other doctors. He’s truly a cut above the rest.
So if you have any skin problems, I highly recommend Dr. Fung. Just dont take my preferred appointment times. =P

Dr. Fung is the nicest, most agreeable, personable, competent and responsive doctor I’ve had the opportunity to see. It took me many years to find a dermatologist, and I honestly wish he was a general practitioner as I would love to go to Dr. Fung for any medical need (natch, I’ve asked him to do so, but he won’t…my loss). I look forward to every visit as I know that I will receive his full attention, his sense of humor, and his ability to relate to the issues I am facing as I get older. I tell *everyone* I know that they should seek him out!

We like this doctor. I’ve never had to wait, the doctor is on time. The front desk is friendly and quite organized. When I phone in I get a cognizant and responsive person.
He’s helped with my family’s apparently genetic skin issues deftly, a fine diagnostician. He has a gentle, totally engaged, friendly, and respectful manner. He’s smart but secure, whereas you feel some doctors will never grow-​up and out of trying to impress you with their smartness. For me he has a great way of explaining things, and he adapts according to my level of understanding of something.
He’s totally efficient but doesn’t make you feel rushed. I’m very respectful of doctors’ time but he never seems irritated by a question.

Finally, I found have a wonderful dermatologist. After seeing a few previous dermatologists whom I shall not name I was at a loss to find one. Thanks to all of my fellow Unilocalers, I found Dr. Fung. Also his educational background is pretty impressive. His office is very warm and inviting. Easy to find right off the freeway and has evening hours. While in the waiting room I watched animal planet, yes I said animal planet on a nice flat screen tv.
Dr. Fung has a great bed side manner, which to me is very important. You want to feel comfortable with someone who is going to staring at your «issues». While at my appointment I never once felt rushed. He broke everything down for in terminology I could understand and why my skin was acting the way it was. He provided me with several samples, which was very helpful for the issues I was seeing him for. Nothing worse than spending a ton of money on something that doesn’t work or makes everything worse.
Yes, I had to wait 8 weeks to get in with him, but worth the wait.

5 Stars! Very personable and friendly with a smooth running practice and friendly staff. He takes the time to explain everything clearly which is rare in my experiences. Since seeing him I have had much better results and a greater understanding of my fun skin problems which makes it easier to take care of. Hands down the best dermatologist I have seen.

I am not good at waiting! It was hard to wait the 3 months for the first appt. It was SOOO worth it. Appts for daughter, son and me and we all LOVE Dr. Fung. So approachable, great a listening and does not rush. I kept asking question after question and he remained as patient as the moment we walked through the door. I really appreciated the way he connected with each of my kids (14 and 21) as individuals. As others as stated he practices medicine is a sensible way without an agenda. I have referred at least 7 or 8 other people and they are all as thrilled. It’s true he is thoughtful and funny was well… you want to have a beer with him. I would give him seven stars if the rating existed. Not as enthusiastic about the office staff but I would walk through fire for Dr. Fung.

Dr. Fung, like all other Unilocalers agree, is a fabulous doctor. He saw me at 5:30pm on a Friday, didn’t expect to get an appt. that late, and when I thanked him, he told me that he now works ’till 7pm MWF and had 2 «daddy-​daughter» days… awwww.
He is so personable and friendly; I seriously wish all doctors were this way. He has never made me feel like I am wasting his time and always answers all of my questions in a way that I can understand.
I’m so glad to be in the care of Dr. Fung.

Most of us have suffered the inanities and humiliations of doctor visits, the cold receptionists, the stupid little rooms, the standoffish mechanical blood pressure taking, and then finally the Great One appears in your little room hardly looks at you (or looks at you as if you were a specimen in a jar), reads NONE of the info you just spent twenty minutes writing up in the waiting room, and then begins to probe you like a turkey being stuffed, and eventually you leave poorer in pocket and in spirit (I once left a urologist’s office and cried all the way home).
But from my very first visit three years ago I knew that Dr. Fung was nothing less then the best medical doctor I have ever been to and I’ve been to a lot, and I don’t just mean the best dermatologist. I have told him before that I wish he was a GP so he could handle all my medical needs.
The reason he is so good is that he sincerely takes a real interest in you and your life, and he takes his time with you. You never feel rushed, quite the contrary, I’ve even felt selfish for all the time he has given me in his office (imagine that). I’ve had a number of skin issues and for each one he has explained every procedure carefully, what the options are, the risks, the probable outcomes, etc. I am most grateful to him for spotting a small melanoma on my cheek during a regular skin examine. I could have died if he did not see that, or lost a large part of my cheek, as it was he sent me to a specialist surgeon and you can hardly see the tiny scar that could have been a crater.
I’ve seen him about half a dozen times over the last three years and every time it’s the same high quality service and attitude. He also has a funny little blog, the title? «Fung in the Sun» !!!

I was referred to Dr. Fung from my primary care physician for an age spot that I wanted removed. I took a 6:30pm appt on a Friday evening! I didn’t know any MD had appts that late! He was running really late and I didn’t actually get in to see him until 7:15pm. However, the office staff was so nice and personable that I didn’t feel ignored and wasn’t bored. A nurse also came out to the waiting area to let me know about the wait and apologized. The first thing Dr. Fung did was also apologize for the delay. I think we all have those days and it’s just important to communicate appropriately and acknowledge/​apologize as necessary and everyone in his office did that!
Although I originally went for one thing, I ended up speaking to him about 3 issues. He didn’t mind at all and treated 2 of the items and suggested options of 2 different medications for the 3^rd. I thought that I was supposed to think about my medication options and speak to him about my choice on my follow-​up appt. Surprisingly though, I got a call from him next day (Saturday!) when he told me that he forgot to give me some samples and that he put them in the mail. I’m really looking forward to my follow up visit. He was competent, gave thorough explanations for procedure options, treated me efficiently, was very professional, and extremely personable.

Dr. Fung is the best dermatologist! He has an office in Oakland and one in Lafayette. He was able to help me with a skin rash that I’ve taken to Kaiser dozens of times over the years, only to get an answer, «Put some Vasaline on it and it’ll go away.» I found out about him because one of my friends works there. He was able to look at my boyfriend’s moles and this bump and immediately identify the problem. He’s always easy to talk to and you can ask as MANY questions as you like! He’s a really nice guy and I always leave with a bag full of really good skin care samples!

Dr. Jason Fung has seen my hubby for acne treatment. Dr. Fung is really nice. I checked him out before making the appointment. He went to an elite private highschool, went to Yale and then University of Rochestor for med school. Dermatology is an extremely hard residency to get and he went to Yale and Wash U. That told me he was extremely intelligent so I decided to make an appt.
He’s very personable and he doesn’t rush you in and out of his office. My hubby had an appt with him and somehow dropped his cell phone in his office, where it then fell apart to pieces. Dr. Fung went on his hands and knees looking for the missing piece which was the battery cover. No one could find it but Dr. fung told his assistants to keep looking and told the hubby that he’ll let him know if they find it.
Bottom Line: Dr. Fung is extremely personable and will answer any questions you might have about dermatology. He’s extremely knowledgeable and has two practices in the bay area.
