I was disappointed to test my local coffee shop and get weak, stale coffee. There are so many mediocre places that serve a far batter brew. $ 3 for just coffee is also more than I pay in the San Francisco FiDi.

Nice atmosphere, but skip the espresso. There aren’t many options for a café in this area of Oakland, so I think much of the rating for this place is maybe based on lack of other options. The espresso in my iced latte was super bitter … I never use sweetener, but had to here to get the $ 4 drink down. It’s a kind of small space if you want to set up shop here while you work, but the atmosphere is open and nice. They do have some sweets and breakfast/lunch options(bagels and toast). I just wasn’t a fan, especially given some of the other places in the area if you can drive a bit farther.

I tried this place for the first time yesterday and left more frazzled than I came in. My experience upon first arriving was nothing short of chaotic. The staff seemed stressed and disinterested in helping customers. I witnessed two employees sit there and talk about their weekend plans while I waited at the counter for several minutes for service. The food was sub par but to be honest it’s whats to be expected at coffee shops. I mean has anyone tried the food at Starbucks, it’s nothing great either, and nor is their coffee. My boyfriend and I were trying to decide which is worse, Starbucks or Kilovolt. The coffee was really bland, it almost tasted stale, like they had not been storing it properly. I was hoping that a small independent coffee shop like KiloVolt in the heart of Oakland would be a hidden jewel. Sadly, I left disappointed. Luckily there is still blue bottle.

I feel like this is one of those places that I already knew existed, or had heard about at some point, but somehow it was a surprise when my friend and I stumbled upon it. The staff was delightful and super helpful with my GF friends’ food order. I was beyond thrilled to finally learn what to do with Hodo Soy’s yuba strips, The Campbell sandwich is a simple and delicious light meal and their mocha’s are delicious. I’ll definitely be hitting this spot again.

Look at all the 5 stars! I agree, a much needed spot in the neighborhood. Friendly staff, good coffee, yummy food, and hassle-free parking. (Wish they had eggs though)

Those ladies know what’s up – they’re kind yet on it – and their breakfast sammie is so real. Mmmm.

I no longer go to this establishment. I used almost daily. Fantastic location in the middle of a food/coffee desert with lots of street parking and a greenway with benches across the street for additional seating options. Average quality and slightly pricey sandwiches. It seems like one day their business just exploded. I would say that their success is largely location — driven hence my unwillingness to stand in line for average coffee.

Horrible. 10:15 this morning and the place was slammed. The staff was completely overwhelmed and messing up lots or orders. We ordered two bagels, only got one and waited for it for over 10 minutes. Tables were all occupied by single folks not eating and on their laptops. Loved this place before today.

I kind of fell in love with this place. It’s got an effortless cool the kind of place that doesn’t oppress you by trying too hard. Has a great slice of life coming through its doors. Kids, dogs, families and couples. Stop in for a min and be relaxed.

Their toast is not toasted, and their Chai lattes are throat-burningly overpowering. Too much Chai, not enough toasting.

Started working in the neighborhood and stopped in to snoop around and found friendly faces & great spaces. Nice to have a café destination walking distance from the work spot.

thank God for a friend/neighbor who informed me about this place. I’ve lived around this place but never realized there’s a café in our area. I was supposed to meet with a friend here but ended up missing him. Parking is not hard to find so I went in and checked out their coffees and food. I was very pleased. Coffee is by sightglass. which I love. The menu is small but it has good stuff. Juices, yogurt and such in the fridge are good options too. Now I bring my son here on the weekends. We especially like the fact that we can see dogs in or outside the store. Wish there are more chairs but I can’t complain. The staff are always to me and my son.

I frequent this place — love the coffee, chill atmosphere, good people. Try the Avocado toast.

Solid coffee house in West Oakland. I always order their ice coffee(black). It’s quite strong. Pair it with a pastry item and you are ready to conquer your day. Pros: –Plenty of street parking. –Sitting space. –Hipsters(well maybe a con for some, but I enjoy people watching). –Love their pastries. Cookies. –Solid coffee made w/awesome beans which by the way they sell for $ 16-$ 21/lb(approximately). –Friendly, hometown feeling. –Takes credit card. –Yes. Drip. Drip coffee. –Ambiance is good. Not crowded or stuffy. Noise level good. –Clean bathroom. This is not an understatement. I never take public bathrooms for granted. Cons: –This is not McDonalds coffee. Be prepared to pay. –Closes at 5pm. Good for your morning run or lunch.

I typically always make coffee at home, but when we run out of coffee on weekend mornings my wife always jets down to kV for my favorite neighborhood coffee. Im not fancy and have shifted over to americanos(drip is always high risk of burn and they are always consistent) and kV’s has killer flavor and great balance. This place was just a spectacular addition to our neighborhood.

I really can’t believe how expensive this place is, I thought it was a joke at first. Considering the neighborhood it is in, you’d think they’d try to accomodate all residents in the area, not just the too-cool-for-school ones. I mean, would you build a Burger King in Nob Hill? One Unilocaler, ‘Maria T’ writes that only hipsters look at Unilocal reviews, which is possibly the most self-justifying thing I’ve read. Outsiders just don’t get it, I guess. ANYWAY… The coffee is more than a bit light for my taste, and has almost no distinct flavor. I’m not a toast connoisseur, so the food doesn’t interest me either. The interior also has a weird, awkward set up. When I was there, there were several dudes dressed up like they were gonna have tea with Oscar Wilde. For a moment, I thought as was in Berkeley. In essence, there’s nothing about this place that distinguishes it from the next bland hipsteropolis. It’s expensive, in the middle of the hood, and totally boring.

The folks at Kilovolt are super down-to-earth. Love their customers & love what they do. I come in pretty regularly, sometimes just to grav and go sometimes to sit & stay, either way I always have an experience that makes me want to come back.

This spot is super sweet. Great vibe. The pastries are so friggin delicious. I love their cinnamon rolls, pistachio macrons, chocolate croissants and salt n caramel brownies. The beverages are great. I’m not a huge fan of coffee but enjoy beverages. I was provided with brief education from the employees with no judgement. The owner was super approachable and the staff are greatly diverse. The sandwiches are tasty as well. I enjoyed the open face sandwiches.

Kilovolt is doing much better! They’ve provided a good space to hang out and there’s art now and little jars filled with flowers. They have good coffee and breakfast items. Previously I said they needed to stand out. They still don’t stand out apart from any other coffee spot in terms of coffee BUT they’re stand alone in West Oakland and they cater to folks who ride bicycles! Example, they sell bicycle accessories, have a bicycle air pump, and their lids are conveniently made with an extra high rise so that if you put your coffee in your bicycle drink holder it won’t spill! Thanks for being in the neighborhood!

Wonderful casually cool service. They were flexible with my order and made me an almond steamer, off menu and didn’t give me slack for it. The Americano was deep and peppy. Good stuff. Interesting artwork on the walls, the seating and sparseness could use some work, it’s kind of sad looking. Wasn’t a huge fan of the clientele. Yes hipster, but it’s not that, look, don’t stare, didn’t mom teach you that’s rude??? Not sure if I would make it back just for a sip, nothing else in the area to entice me to drop by, but great neighborhood vibe.
