You HAVE to try the«Dynamite Roll». Omg! Thee best. It’s baked salmon with all types of goodness sauce. I only took a pic of the«Shrimp tempura» which is good too. I gave this place a 4 star only because they didn’t have the short rib rolls I wanted. They were all out. Everyone was friendly. Good yummy hole-in-the-wall spot

I’ve come here for maybe 12 years. I’m a vegetarian, so I just get avocado rolls and umeshiso(real good), but the rice/seaweed mixture is good, and the avocados are flavorful, so why the heck not. The main things I like about this spot are a) they have a nice happy hour deal where you can get cheap hot sake during dinner time(I think it ends at 7?). b) they’re open past midnight. c) not too pretentious. They’ve got some fancy rolls and stuff, but man, that biz is for noobs. You know if a place is good when they make something simple taste good, and nothing is simpler than rice, one vegetable, and seaweed, and they do a good job. It’s not the best sushi you’ll ever have in the bay area(that’s Geta), but it might be in your top 5, and with the prices and the cheap sake that’s good enough for me. Much better than Kansai across the way, I’ll also add.

Been going here consistently for about 6 months ! Either just me and the hubby or the whole fam almost every week ! Big perks is that they close 2 in the morning and we all get off late ! I love the Mexican roll everything always taste fresh. This place is def a whole in the wall but a good one !!

Go to sushi spot, take out in 10 to 15 min. Never had a bad time here. Just a good reliable place, family owned business too. Prices went up, but that’s oakland.

This place is a true gem! It’s tiny and the food is oh so yummy! The staff is very friendly, hospitable and the best thing is it’s open till 2 am! Not to mention the chef Mike… He is so meticulous and precise about his art… That’s right yummy art! We go so often he got us our own chopsticks. He holds his staff to the highest standards and they don’t disappoint either!

This review is mostly for me because I need to remember to stop going here. It is so easy to want to pop in right before hitting up Jaguar. Ok let’s be a little positive. — I always find parking — I never have to wait for a table(hint hint) — baked rolls are the exact sort of greasy and unhealthy you want when you’re choosing one — salmon skin hand rolls at HH for $ 2.50 — standard edamame, miso soup, not too much sushi rice on the rolls Now, the cons — the sashimi comes out in small slivers and always has that«just thawed feeling» — the beer bottles are never cold(some points for cold glasses) — hint of smokiness to the spicy tuna(maybe some people like that but not my cup of tea) bottom line — the sushi quality isn’t great and isn’t that the reason I came here

Came here at 2AM on a Saturday because those munchies creeped up on us. Got a bento box, tempura udon, and spicy mussels. The food is okay. Nothing out of the ordinary and I cant speak for the sushi. The udon was soggy by the time I got back home. The broth tasted like straight seaweed water. The mussels were pretty good, but it’s literally chilled mussel with salsa on top lol. The boyfriend killed his bento, the rib eye skewers were good but the chicken teriyaki was whateves. We were just starvin marvins. 3 stars because this place opens late!

Cute little place in the plaza ! Super friendly and they give you a lot for what you pay for. Try their lion king roll and their sashimi. Their food is pretty fresh.

Just another average Japanese restaurant. Was impressed with their vegetarian varieties however. Decent sashimi, decent rolls nothing super and nothing horrible. However, would advise against the yakitori. Not up to par to other yakitori places, but that is a given since this is mainly a sushi restaurant. Come here to avoid the crowd at Kansai and for a more intimate meal.

I’d go here for late night sushi, but only if Kansai isn’t open. Sushi is mediocre. Tried the Oh sexy roll which was good but the portion was small. I’m a bit disappointed about that. Dynamite was good, but it was too heavy. It filled us up tho so I’m happy about that. I didn’t have high expectations for this place but just wanted sushi at 12:30am.

Late night deep fried oysters, great service, pretty tasty unagi-anything. They’re great. Caveat: EVERYTHING is good about this restaurant EXCEPT sitting at the bar. Such good food, such smells-like-urine bar. tl;dr: This is late night Temescal, and it’s good.

Got the mega vegi roll, caterpillar, and killer roll. For some reason the vegi roll tasted sort of fishy but the caterpillar roll was delicious.

For bland and overly salty fair they charge a lot of money. Most of their fair is a fraction of the portions anywhere else. E.g. sushi/sashimi combo is $ 22 however only eight pieces… Oshitashi(spinach) is a third of the portions anywhere else but is so salty it makes it uneatable. The fact that greeting boy is rude and the waitresses looked haggard(too many hours on their feet?) and seemed put upon when they are asked for anything does not make for a pleasant experience. Now you might ask yourself how come some reviewers give this crappy place such high marks… It just doesn’t make any sense. Well it turns out that most people who give good reviews literally don’t know any better… meaning that they have not known superior sushi in their recent memory and have nothing to compare it to… ignore them!

The Devil’s Ramen is a must! Super spicy, super flavor, with Cha Su Pork. It’s like a foodgasm in your mouth and it will burn 10 mins after you eat it too. I had 2 liters of water with that please. Volcano roll is spicy too, stuff don’t always get presented like the pictures, but they taste just as good. Staff there is pretty friendly.

this place is decent sushi, haven’t had anything bad there in the 10 times or so I’ve been there. Ok sometimes it has been after a night of drinking, or late night airport pickup. When we sit at the bar(which we do mostly) we get free miso & they usually slide over something free to try. Maybe it helps that I’m a gringa that knows how to say thank you in Korean. I am bummed that they don’t have real crab anymore, my fav was the real-crab CA roll topped w/salmon & lemon…:(

They served me frozen sashimi. Nope, sorry. Nothing you do is gonna warrant higher than a 1 star after that. One bite in, and it felt like ice cream. Two bites in and my stomach started hurting. I should have stopped there but I was hungry. Left the restaurant with a massive stomach ache. The meal was actually pretty decent up to that point. I just don’t get how a sushi chef can not notice that their fish that they are plating is frozen. Like, wouldn’t it be cold and hard to the touch? Nope, never coming back here again.

The late night joint… Koryo is where you go when it is real late… or real early if you’re a glass half full kind of person… and you’ve got to get some sushi in you before nodding off… or continuing on to what’s next. Forget the fact that there are probably people hanging out out front, and you’re worried about your car.(Do’t worry, nothing ever happens. and often police are by getting something to eat.) Forget about the slightly old fried oil smell and the slight stickiness of oil vapor soaked surfaces… You’re not here for the ambience… You’re here for the late night /early morning sushi… Sober up on the miso soup… hard to get this wrong, and they don’t. Hot, salty broth with lots of tofu and greens. Good start to an eye opener. All the nigiri is serviceable… last time I was here, the salmon, maguro and hamachi with a garlic paste were great… the latter a revelation, actually. The rolls are not any particular great shakes, but they are not Safeway level rolls either… they are your money’s worth. The prices are right, the beer cooler is full… what more do you need?

Late night in Oakland and have a hankering for sushi? There are two options: Koryo and Kansi( ) across the street. Both are open until 2 a.m. However, whereas Kansai seems to always be filled with drunk people, Koryo isn’t. Maybe it’s the smell in the restaurant that keeps them away. If you sit in the back room next to the dishwashing area, there is quite an unappetizing odor emanating from that direction: \ If you sit anywhere, stick with the front of the restaurant or at the tables in the back near the front windows. Trust me. The fish is presented in a pleasing manner, however, the taste is a bit off, as if it’s not fresh. Order the cooked items, such as the unagi and tamago. Forgo the sashimi or other raw fish. If I have to choose between sober and smelly or drunk and messy, I would choose the later at Kansai, hands down. Recommended: * Uniagi Donburi * Tamago Nigiri Not Recommended: * Chirashi * Temaki(Hand Rolls)

For $ 99, you can buy a super FRESH sushi meal straight from their fish tank. Meet and greet the fish that will go into your belly. It’s all part of the food chain, so, chill out. Fresh fresh fresh… that’s as fresh as you can get with sushi. One day, I’m going to order that meal! I just had to tell the story here. I came here with my BFF for the oyster deal that starts at 7:30pm. And since we were here, we ordered and shared all these items: FRESHOYSTERS — fresh little morsels with Tabasco sauce and lemons($ 3.99) SASHIMIDINNER — we had the chef selected each item and it was fresh, clean, simple and very tasty with each bite we took. 3 pieces of salom, 3 pieces of red tuna, 3 pieces of white tune, 3 pieces of hamachi, and 3 pieces of this white fish I couldn’t identify. But oh man, was it good! Comes with soup, salad and rice.($ 21.00) 49ERROLL — Cali-roll with salmon and thinly sliced lemons($ 7.95) UNAGINIGIRI — Comes out warm with a small drizzle of sauce. Pop it into your mouth and it tastes so fantastic(~$ 5) FRESHOYSTERS(ROUND2) — fresh little morsels with Tabasco sauce and lemons($ 3.99) We were completely satisfied and happy with our dinner! It’s hole in the wall Japanese Animé decorations. The servers were nice. There’s a small parking lot. And the sushi are very very fresh! NOTES: Sister restaurants are Miyozen in Emeryville and Drunken Fish in Oakland. Both very good also. I do believe this is the original location. They have been around for a very very long time, they know their sushi craft very well too!
