Back again and it is great to see consistency in the quality. The freshly arrived toro in on the menu tonight! I’ve brought my girl and my appetite!

First of all, they gave us a choice of ice water and tea without telling us they actually charge for the tea. Bad start. The waiter was strangely stuck up, which made us uncomfortable; when we told him that we would like to not have tea after finding out that it’s not free, he was visibly disturbed. My friend ordered tempura which was soggy and I ordered a grilled mackerel dish that felt both fishy and mushy as if a drunk 5 year old cooked it. I don’t get it.

Had horrible service and food :( I was a bit dubious when our waiter seemed a bit smug and disinterested but, I was truly done when he missed half or order :( 30 mins after our meal began my friend was done eating and my order was nowhere to be seen. We managed to flag down a waiter and asked about the order. Long story short it wasn’t on the check so he put it in for me. Ten minutes later still no order, asked when it would be done and we were told there were three orders in front of us, ugh !!! I said we were leaving and they asked us to stay and that they would rush the order. I should have stuck to my guns and left but, I was sooooo hungry and I wanted to believe It was worth the wait. Not only did the original waiter come over to tell us we never ordered the roll instead of apologizing he kept arguing with my friend when he went to pay. It was 50 mins later when I had them wrap up the order as we were late to our movie. One smell of it and I knew there was bonito flakes in the sushi, I’m vegan. The topper was they actually charged for the late rolls, $ 8 for an inari roll ! And I couldn’t even eat it. Guess they knew they’d never see us again do they charged as much as they could. Waist of money.

I love this place. Rewind a few months to when my boyfriend and I were going to watch a movie at grand lake with a friend but our plans changed at the last min. I was pregnant and hungry for sushi so I went on Unilocal and found this place. The staff is so friendly and the food comes out pretty fast(great when you’re pregnant) and the food is amazing. There never seems to be a lot of people in the place the 10+ times we have gone. But that’s a good thing!

I ate here last weekend with my husband, & I just started salivating when I logged on to write this review. Our meal was absolutely delicious. Our waiter was so kind, knowledgable, funny, & on top of it! When I love a place this much, I am always sad when there aren’t more people there! I am pretty picky when it comes to the fish that I eat, Fresh is always # 1. Since we were only one of two customers there on a Saturday night, I was worried that the fish wouldn’t be fresh. I was wrong, it was very fresh & perfectly cut. Everything was absolutely wonderful. GOEATHERE, NOW!

Love good late night sushi. And this place fits the bill. Add to the experience great service well done guys. Going to take a second to give a thank you to my waiter Olfred, great job on the recommendations. The only downfall was how dark the storefront was. I drove by twice before I realized they were open. But if it was brighter I think it would loose its ambiance. Well done guys, food and service. Thank you.

This place is romantic, modern, and ultra yummy. I can’t say it enough. I love the nigiri unagi. Eat it as soon as it reaches your table. Don’t wait a second longer. The feel of the meat while still hot will complement the soy sauce/wasabi soaked rice. ONLYDIPTHERICE!!! Let the flavors marry each other while you toss it in your mouth for a smooth finish. Save some room for sake.

I’m picky. This place is simply delicious. I wish I could find a flaw but dammit even I, cannot. And open late?! And great service? We had the sashimi spicy salad, hamachi carpaccio, 49er & Spicy Spicy rolls. The ice tea came chilled with no ice in it. Lovely. And there are Japanese guys in the kitchen. Win win win! Enjoy!

Based on the ratings, I had high expectations for this place. Unfortunately, it did not deliver. The Chirashi bowl was pricey, which would have been OK if all of the sashimi was fresh and stellar. However, I could tell that at least 4 out of 6 of the different types of sashimi had been previously frozen(had that freezer burn taste). For a $ 20+ entrée, this is unacceptable. BTW, the miso and salad were good — but those are hard to mess up. Seasoned rice in chirashi bowl was 3⁄5. My bf had the tempura, which was nothing to write home about. Shogun, I really want to like you! We live so close and are huge sashimi lovers… ‚-(

I had just got done watching the Denver & Indy Sunday night football game. It was quite late 9:30PM, So I did a Unilocal Search and Shogun Japanese Sushi and Grill popped up. I had a fresh Charge on my Ankle Bracelet so I rolled Oakland. I arrived and got lucky to find street parking right in front of Shogun. They are located right next to Star Pizza. I rolled into Shogun and was Greeted and Seated by my Server. He presented me with a Menu. While I perused it my Server brought me a Miso Soup and a Glass of Water. I ordered Fried Calamari for an Appetizer and the Seafood Katsu for my main course. Shogun is Sparsely decorated but has a nice Samurai Suit by the Front Door. There’s Hawaiian Music playing as the Proprietors are Hawaiian. My Server delivered my Calamari first it was a good sized portion and it came with a nice Dipping Sauce. Tasted great . 10 minutes later my Seafood Katsu came out. It was a good sized portion it came with a Side Salad and a Scoop of White Rice. The Fish tasted great and there were different types of Fish in the Katsu. The Quality of food at Shogun is Good, and Their Open to Midnight Fabulous !!! Service is good. Shogun seems to be a family run business . I received my Bill and Paid By Credit Card . I like Shogun its a great Late Night Option.

What a hidden gem! I don’t know where to begin but I can honestly say this is theee best sushi spot in Oakland hands down! Quality, service, presentation… all superb! The miso soup was perfect. The side salad was the best I’ve ever had, no cheap watery icebergs with a half slice of tomato and watery dressing, no… their salad is seriously top of the line for being your regular sushi side salad. The dressing was so great we asked to buy a bottle lol but they only make it for the day, but they were nice enough to give us a side to go! Even the side of rice(that came with our salmon teriyaki that was cooked to perfection) was perfectly moist! No dry rice here… which makes for even better rolls… We had the Snow White roll which was a mountain of sushi heaven! And the Creamy Orange roll, delicious. But the presentation of the sashimi was so impressive, a bowl filled with ice with hamachi on a thinly sliced lemon was the freshest and tastiest I’ve ever had… and I usually don’t eat raw fish like that… but I def do now! Now let’s talk about their spicy mayo. I always get a side of spicy mayo with any sushi, but when they brought their version out it didn’t look like your usual spicy mayo, so I let my taste buds be the judge… and dear baby Jesus, best effing spicy mayo ever. Ever! Def got a side to go as well. The server said his mom makes it and boy can I feel & taste the love in that! We finished off with hot tea, they have my fave roasted rice green tea, and the presentation of it down to the clear glasses was so nice! We fell in love with the place, no more driving to Sushi House in Alameda, doesn’t even compare. Being right by the lake, we left with brows raised knowing it’s so close to us! Tears of joy for sure. Can’t wait to come back, and try more items on the menu, Shogun, thank you!

Had a lovely dinner on a Friday night. Stepped in at 930. I’m not sure why, but the place was completely empty, so the service was prompt. Staff was friendly. The rolls were delicious and presented beautifully.(We had the Orange Blossom and the Crown.) The staff gave us complimentary gyoza and shrimp tempura, which was a lovely surprise. Two suggestions: the staff didn’t mention what was in the gyoza, so although it was *awesome* and we appreciated the gesture, unfortunately we had to send the dumplings back as neither of us eat poultry, pig or cow. I felt bad about wasting the food. Perhaps offer(x menu item) on the house and give patrons the option to decline? The other nit is that a staffer’s phone kept ringing for quite a long time. Not a big deal, it’s just that the phone was hooked up to the main music speaker, so it was noticeable and messed with the ambiance a little. I liked the music choice, though! Acoustic guitar. If you read my previous review, it was lukewarm, but I’d chalk that up to just working out the wrinkles of early opening days. Of note, they changed the seating arrangement, so the chances of feeling bench-kicks is now greatly decreased. Based on my most recent experience, this restaurant deserves its current great rating on Unilocal.I’ll definitely be back and I am looking forward to trying more of their menu offerings! I encourage you to give them a try too!

Exactly what I needed tonight. Just finished a gorgeous, tasty dinner with my girl and could not be happier. Got in near the end of the night, and we had the place to ourselves. Ordered the blue fin sashimi to start, had to get the Toro ’cause I was in a fix for it, and on recommendation got the Brian Roll which was spicy and on point. Service was great, and thank you Chef for all the great food you sent us. Arigato gozaimasu. This is my new’ go-to place’ when I’m in the lake Merritt area.

I love coming to this place and I noticed they changed the windows in front so you can look into the restaurant which is great and also in the front window, they indicate that they use organic chicken! We came here for a late dinner and no problem getting a table. We ordered the chirashi, sashimi dinner, chicken teriyaki and chicken teriyaki/tekka maki combo. All were excellent and the chirashi was beautifully presented and the sashimi very fresh! Service is always personable and they even gave us vegetarian eggrolls to sample.

This is my favorite sushi place in Oakland. The family who owns it is really friendly, and they always give me something on the house. My favorite is their spicy tuna– it’s called Route 66 on the menu. I’ve never been a sushi fan before this place. They’re also very considerate and always check if my water is filled. Love!

This place has big shoes to fill! It has 2 direct competitors within one block. Their only strong competitive edge is that they serve ramen. Pricing: high Portions: Ok Service: Nifty Ambiance: Nifty Taste: Ok What did I order? Ramen! It was alright but I was able to leave food on the table without guilt. Sashimi: A-Ok but would have enjoyed competitively large portions.

Came by here with some family. It was weird that they had a plant on the table and didn’t take it off when I was sitting at the table. I noticed that there was slow service for small restaurant. It took a while for us just to get a plain tobiko roll and some nigiri. The sushi was pretty fresh. My beef teriyaki was not bad quality but had a lot of tendon left on it. The shrimp tempura seemed not super great quality and covered in a thick layer of crunchy tempura. Overall, an OK experience here at Shogun.

I had mixed feelings about my meal at Shogun. On one hand the food seemed above average They start you with some OK miso soup( ) and tea comes in a fancy glass pot( ) which reminded me of Yank Sing’s in SF. I had the chirashi which had a variety of fresh fish including your typical maguro, hamachi, shiro maguro, and sake(2 each + 3 of salmon) but also a slice of toro( ) and amaebi including the fried head( ). There were also a couple of slices of escolar(super white tuna /butterfish) which taste good, but remember to avoid over-consumption( ). The rice had a sprinkle of black sesame seeds which added a nice flavor. What brought things down for me was questionable hygiene. The sushi chef /waiter wore plastic gloves when prepping my food(good thing), but kept them on when handling my bill & money and then went back to making sushi for the other customers. .. he was not wearing them when I arrived and put them on to make my chirashi, but I couldn’t help, but wonder where they’d been before. So maybe 4 stars for the chirashi, but dropping a couple overall for the hygiene.
