This is an awesome place to spend a night out. Great beer selection, friendly staff, convenient parking, and yummy food. My husband is really a beer guy, and he was really surprised at the selection. That is not an easy to do!

One of my favorite places and first stops I make when in Oakland!!! The pulled pork sandwich is the business. Great place to start if you are new to the craft beer world. The bar tenders will get your knowledge up and Sippin in no time!

I came here for Oakland Restaurant Week with some coworkers. For $ 20, you get two pulled pork sandwiches, pickled vegetables, and a 750ml Bottle of Brasserie Dupont Moinette Brune. Great deal!!! The pulled pork sandwich was so good! The pork was cooked perfectly and it was spicy! I also really liked how they did not drench the sandwich with BBQ sauce(not a big fan of soggy sandwiches). Since you pay first, it can be hard to find a table to sit down at. Parking can also be difficult.

The best stout I’ve ever had. Seriously. The best beer I’ve ever had. Seriously. The beef stew I’ve had at a restaurant. Seriously. This place totally surprised me. This little hidden gem with great food and beer. A really good kale salad. The best cheese platter. This is great spot. Seriously.

With SF Beer Week in town, we were deleted to see the place hosting themed craft days(we enjoyed the sour selections). For the other 51 weeks you can view their website for what beers they tap on the daily. There is two bar spaces labeled front and back: the front behaves like a regular bar space and holds 15 or so taps, whereas the back bar behaves as a ordering desk with only 10 taps and most the patrons line in an orderly fashion(longer wait, but again, orderly). Findings seats can be tough, if you go outside behind the front you can find shared picnic benches to enjoy your brews. Also, make sure to bring a bearded fellow so you don’t appear out of place.

Can’t believe I’ve never reviewed this place! The Trappist is a great place for afternoon drinks and a quick bite – their grilled cheese is so good! I also love their patio in the back.

My vegetarian friends love the food here especially the grilled cheese… I’ll have to admit it’s pretty damn good. I come here for the Belgian beers myself.

We just finished dinner next door and decided we’ve always wanted to check this place out, and since the night was still young(even though we are old) it was beer O’clock time! This place has a very chill vibe, nice bar to pull up and have a nice selection of beer. Not to mention if you are hungry some pretty rockin’ looking bar nibbles. After only scoring one stool at the bar, we saw an empty table farther back to go land with our beer and both of us cozy up on the bench. I didn’t check it out but I guess the rest of the place wraps around the back to the other side? Theres also a back area outside, that would be great on a warm summer evening. Though there were two dudes sitting out there last night, since it was cold and starting to sprinkle… not so much. We had already parked in the lot next door for a flat $ 10, easy peasy. Along with street parking or a few blocks from bart. Nice just hanging out having a few beers and just having a lazy Friday after a big delicious dinner. Perfect date nite.

During our conference break, we were looking for a place that was local and good. What stood out for most of us were the high reviews of this place. If you’re looking for reviews on drinks… I recommend not reading this review. Ambiance Parking: Street parking or garage parking. Since it’s a city setting… good luck. Seating: * Both outside and inside seating. Structured from bar seating or group seating. The place can house a good 50+ people. Feels: * The fact that it’s on a pretty busy street was pretty cool. You have a nice view of LA and the football field of the high school. Not the most gentrified place which makes it pretty cool and authentic. I personally haven’t had any issues with safety, I guess cause it’s by a church. Food: Duck Confit(Recommend) For some reason I was expecting a salad… that’s my bad. Any who the duck was juicy and well seasoned however it was a bit too salty for my taste. Customer Service: Our server hustled well and was pretty respectful. Overall: 4 stars. I had a good experience but not the best experience, maybe it just wasn’t my cup of tea. The food was good and a tad bit pricy, I do wish they did offer more selections. Next time, I’ll be sure to check out their drinks. TL;DR Tips: * Water is self-serve outside.

Woohoo craft European beer, and great food to accompany it! Trappist offers quite a sizable beer list, which is great for the beer connoisseur in everyone. The bratwurst was mouth watering! Seating can be a little cramped, but it isn’t a deal breaker. With it’s wonderful downtown Oakland location, it makes it easy to venture to other near by gems, if bar hopping is your thing. After my first visit at The Trappist, I’ve been converted into a return customer.

shout out to the hardworking folks from behind the bar that really know their beers! last night my friends and i met up for a beer and because it was monday and we come from far and wide(seriously, one was visiting from rwanda) we were trickling into the bar. one of the late comers asked for a taste of the beer and commented how good it was. forgetting what we already ordered we asked for assistance from behind the bar. the gentleman took a quick look at it, gave it a whiff, poured out his best guess to sample… and MATCHEDIT! That’s my PEACE

If I could get trapped anywhere, I’d want to be trapped at the The Trappist. Only half-kidding because if you have a love and appreciation for beers, then this is a great place for you! Because they have such a great beer selection, I was literally floating in beer cloud heaven. The Trappist has a front and a back portion to it as well meaning that they have TWO different BEER menus! So if you’re really down and your tummy is grumbling for some more beer, why not try a pint or maybe even two from both the front and the back! My visit was during the evening hours and it wasn’t too busy. Definitely loved the vibe and the atmosphere of this place. It has dim lighting in the evening, a few candles on the tables, and just good vibes and beers flowing through. Service was great as well & the bartenders explained any questions we had about different beers, gave us some recommendations, and even let us sample one or two before we settled on one. Can’t say anything about the food quite yet, but definitely will try something on my next visit! I’ll be back, Trappist. You have put my beer loving self into a frenzy of IPA, stout, porter, ale, etc. etc. spell!

Where does one go to eat after a half marathon? Anywhere with beer and pub food. My wonderful friends Richard and Judy K picked me up in SF and ferried me around Oakland and its environs and we decided on this place as our first stop. It’s a nice-looking place, with dark wood and a comfortable, old-fashioned pub feel. It was fairly empty on a sleepy Sunday afternoon so we didn’t have any problems getting a table. Their patio looked nice but it happened to be closed that afternoon – too bad. It was hard to choose from their array of beers, but I settled on Prairie Artisan Ales’ 3rd Anniversary Ale and the grilled cheese sandwich and deviled eggs – all excellent. The service was just OK, I felt, with one woman working out front and the occasional person coming out of the kitchen to bring us the food. Nonetheless, we had a nice time before setting off to our next destination. STEPHJUDGEMENT: Great gastropub in Old Oakland.

Being new to fancy beer, my friend recommended the Trappist as a place of destination. When you enter, you find this early century cool architecture, long bar and many many brands of beer and ale I’d not known about. My friend treated me to a bottle of Cuvee’ des Jacobsins; after ordering the friendly attendant remarked: this quality deserves a special glass. And thus, it was so: it was served in a fancy curvy glass. One sip and I knew the head was poppin’ with flavor I have not experienced before. The taste was both deep, chocolately and slightly sour, it’s a special belgium ale. Yummy. Many many choices of fine ale and beers. Décor: old world and kinda fun. Cool crowd. Customer service: tops. Parking: Just north of this place is a parking lot, just $ 2 for an hour. Tip: there is an outdoor patio in the back, that connects to the parking lot. :)

This was stop #2 on my way to the Eat Real Festival and I’ve always wanted to try this place but since I work across the bay, there’s never been a chance for me to venture all the way out here. On a Friday afternoon, there were a fair amount of people here and I plopped down at the bar to look at what they had. The bartender was very friendly and recommended that I try the Saison d’Epeautre, a 6% ABV saison. It was actually the most interesting saison that I ever tried. Very aromatic and had a light aftertaste. My second one was the North Coast Cherry Berliner, a sour beer that really isn’t that sour but more sweet. I can’t imagine this place being packed and I guess they have a back bar with different beer so my bartender had to go back here to get it and leave the front unattended. While she was gone, I was listening to the sweet sounds of Rodriguez from her designated playlist. I never even knew who this guy was until I Googled him(Bob Dylan type of sound). Very mellow and sings in spoken word and songs. The Trappist is no joke and well deserving of their reputation as a beer destination. I hope to get there before the weather gets too cold so I can sit on their outdoor patio.

Best pub in the bay, hands down. They have a wide selection of beers on tap of the finest grade. As a cider lover, I like that there’s at least one cider option available on tap. But, as a cider lover, I also love how all their other beers are so great that I don’t even want to order cider. The Amager Prairie Tulsa Twister is my favorite – boasting a smooth, citrusy finish. Against the Grain Sho’Nuff is also especially tasty. Their pub food is not to be taken lightly. The dedicated chef was really chill and helpful in answering our questions about the menu. The final product was simple – no bs – deliciousness. Admittedly, I ordered the bratwurst with low expectations. I had German food in the past(at an actual decked out German restaurant) that tended towards the greasy side and figured ordering one at a pub would result in the same product. Little did I know, their bratwurst was simple, yet good – no oil oozing out from the sides of the sausage and the dijon swirl added a nice kick. The Trappist has just restored my faith in German cuisine. I tried a bite of the crossrib sandwich and was thoroughly impressed as well. There’s a freshness to their ingredients and simplicity in their preparation that surprises even the most critical(sober) of foodies. Be it afternoon lunch or beer o’clock, The Trappist is the place to be.

With its outdoor patio, communal wooden tables, brick-walled exterior to look at from the outside, wonderful beer selections and delicious bar bites, the Trappist has gotten me trapped and enraptured! It was pleasant to sip on their fine beer while starting to munch on some cheese and cured meat. I was digging my Alpine hoppy birthday IPA. They have the best Reuben Sandwich ever! Not only was it meaty, but the bread was toasted and buttered up to perfection. I was all over that and their Braised Chuck! Their Braised Chuck was tender in a flavorful semi-curry and stew-like bowl. Yum! You order at the bar and they bring it out wherever you are sitting. I was enjoying my splendid time here!

My experience here was more of a 3.5 star rather than a 4 star, but I have this feeling that if I go there some other time(like a Friday afternoon) and sit in the patio, then it will be probably a 4-star experience. Trappist is famous for their beers, so I yet need to try many of their other beers. Found this lace after looking for a place with good beer selection in Oakland. Trappist was definitely a winner. I had the Summer IPA with the rueben sandwich. The Summer IPA was more on the lighter side. The sandwich was tasty(the meat was very smoky which made it very flavorful), however I’ve had better. There are 3 sections in this bar: front bar, back bar, and the patio. The front bar’s selection is different from the back bar’s. I wanted to try the Sculpin IPA since it’s one of their more popular beers, but the front bar was super crowded. Things that could improve: + Offering a bit more varieties of food. + Lowering down the prices of their appetizers. Will definitely come back!

Oversized door at the entrance, check. Huge selection of awesome beers, check. Delicious food, check. Outdoor seating in the back, check. The Trappist definitely has all of the makings for being a totally amazing place to hang out with some friends. A group of friends and I dropped by The Trappist for a post-work social, and we were pleasantly surprised by everything. We arrived around dinnertime, so we ordered a few sandwiches and cheese & meat boards to share. I don’t know if I was just super hungry, but everything was SO good. The Reuben sandwich was warm and toasty with generous portions of pastrami. The cheese and meat boards were delectably mouth-watering, and the accompanying bread was soft with just the right amount of crunch in the crust.(There’s also a bacon brownie on the menu that tempted me, but I decided to be good…) I love the selection of beers here, too. There’s a great combination of American and Belgian beers to choose from, on tap and bottled. That night, I opted for a chocolate and coffee porter whose name escapes me at the moment(but I’ll tell you that it was delicious and smooth). If you’re not sure about what you want, the bartender will always help you out. Speaking of which, all of the workers are also super friendly and helpful. Always willing to assist with a smile :) We’ll definitely be back to The Trappist. There are still so many beers we have to try!(;
