Victor’s Chop Suey was the restaurant’s name when my father took over circa 1955. the menu was americanized chinese food(chow mein, egg fu yong, chop suey, sweet & sour spareribs, etc.), and traditional american(meat loaf, hamburger steak, veal cutlet, frank & beans, b l T sammie’s, etc.) the daily menu changed daily. the .99 special(ninty nine cents), was usually hot dog & beans, meat loaf, hamburger steak, and the like. the menu included soup & salad, tea or coffee, bread & dessert(home made pie, ice cream, or jello/pudding) coffee was .10 these days. the eatery operated 20 hours a day. most of the biz came after 2 a.m. when the nearby bars closed and the drunken sailors/seamen piled in. in my teens, i worked the graveyard shift on weekends, helping out the kitchen push out fried rice, sandwiches, egg foo yung, fried items, and washing dishes. in the daytime, i was downstairs peeling onions, potatoes, carrots… certainly not a barrel of laughs. eventually the business was sold. sometime after that the restaurant itself was gone, wiping out the last hints of the original chinatown in oaktown.(1990’s?)
