This local hole in the wall piqued my interest as I was coming through Ocala. Walking in one might be turned off by the dim lighting and minimalist scenery. There are only two people on staff and they only come out from the kitchen when a customer is ready or arrives. The only hint of people is the small opening that shows the owners hard at work rolling fresh dough and the amazing smell of fresh empanadas that permeate the air.
If you are a first-​timer here you will definitely want to get the empanada combo which consists of 2 sizable empanadas and a drink for $ 4.95. After mulling the immense variety I ultimately decided on a Spinach empanada and a Ropa Vieja empanada. The ropa vieja was saucy and consisted of a background spice that was Cuban-​delicious. Despite this, the winner for me was the meatless Spinach which surprised me considering how much I love meat. The Spinach empanada is melt-​in-​your-​mouth, gooey, fresh mozzarella that just marries so well with the bread. What’s better is that the spinach convinces you that you’re actually eating something healthy; after all how could something so good for the soul be bad for you? Make no mistake though this is a cheese lover’s dream :).
Overall this is THE place to get empanadas. Service is quick and the food is delicious. Just don’t expect to be impressed by the interior nor the service.
