Came for all you can eat Friday fish and chicken combo. Excellent, excellent food. My only complaint was the service. I felt like I was on a conveyor belt and needed to be rushed to eat, pay and leave to let more people in. I was asked 4(FOUR) different times by 3 different people if they could take my plate or if I needed a box or if we needed the check. I’ll admit that I do look like I’m done eating sometimes but I need my food to settle a bit to eat more or I may need a refill and stop eating due to my mouth being very dry. They rushed us out so fast that they brought my box of leftovers to the lobby so our table could be cleared. But still, really good food

We go often for a great German meal and Friday fish fry. Always good never had a disappointment. This past Friday we found that they changed the toyed of fish they use, still Cod but a different cut. They also changed there batter they use. My wife liked it, I found it ok.

My wife and I had a JS online Deal Watch coupon for this restaurant and decided to use it for their Sunday Brunch. It was a great choice. We arrived about 10:00 am and the parking lot was pretty full… always a good sign. We went in and to our delight were seated right away. The inside is bigger than the outside for all you Tardis fans. The décor was very pleasant, nothing fancy but airy and inviting. The first three staff members we met, Hostess, Manager, and waiter, were very friendly and welcoming. We were fortunate to get a window seat with very nice Christmas decorations on the sill. The view was of the area lawn and trees lining the lot. The buffet today came with scrambled eggs plain(nicely firm), scrambled eggs with ham, sausage, and bacon mixed in(very tasty), fried potatoes(looked good), bacon(very tasty), sausages(nice big skinless fat ones), french toast(looked and smelled good), eggs Benedict(yolks nice and runny-my wife’s favorite), baked chicken(WOW, nice skin and moist to the bone), mashed potatoes(wife adored them) and gravy(yummy). For dessert there was fresh fruit, strudel, little cinnamon donuts(ok), and some just the right size deep fried tasty dough thing with cream cheese in the middle… mmmm. We had several of the wait staff attend our table. They were attentive but not intrusive… very well trained. The kept my coffee cup filled and politely removed our plates in between helpings. Other staff members could be seen regularly checking on the chaffing dishes and filling them much before you would think the cooks were running out of food. If I were to comment on anything, it would be the suggestion they add another entrée meat item to the offerings. Perhaps some meat item on their regular menu they would like you to consider coming back during the week for. Even if they had to raise the price of the buffet a dollar or so, it would be worth it to me. I got my money’s worth… I suggest you do too.

Great fish fry! Very crowded on Fridays but the fish fry is the best I’ve had in Wisconsin.

Schwefel’s might not merit a two-hour drive from Chicago, but if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Oconomowoc, give it serious consideration. Last night we feasted on scrumptious sauerbraten, tasty beef rouladen, and perfectly-done turkey schnitzel. Owner/bartender Dan Schwefel steered us towards the warm German potato salad – thank you Dan! Service was very good and Dan’s cocktails were terrific: $ 5 for a perfect martini that runs $ 11 – 16 in Chicago.

One of our favorites. It is nice to have the table set with a tablecloth and cloth napkins. Their German entres are very good(better than some of the«German» restaurants in the area) and reasonably priced. We have had many of their other entre’s and specials and have always been pleased.

We decided to meet family and we were not disappointed by the authentic German food. It’s a very easy place to find and once inside had a nice welcoming atmosphere. The bar area had a great selection of domestic and German imported beers and we were seated once our entire party had arrived. They offer a good amount of food and they do have a large selection of specials on Saturday night. I would definitely pop in again for a nice evening out when I’m in the area again.

If you like Wisconsin Supper Clubs, you will like Schwefels. The restaurant was clean and a very nice atmosphere. The menu had a lot of variety as well. I had the turkey schnitzel and my husband had the Wiener schnitzel. Both were delicious, as well as the bread, salad and French onion soup. I would go here again and recommend this restaurant to friends.

Some restaurants have a chef’s table — this one actually has a busser’s table! Don’t worry, you’ll recognize it as soon as you walk in, the one right in the middle of the front room. It actually provided some great dinner theater watching four waitresses try to use the one water faucet to fill eight pitchers of water at a snails pace and bussers running around crazily while the restaurant was only half full. In addition, it’s near the entrance to the kitchen and every waitress and busser would walk out and look both ways trying to figure out where to go next and would eventually stare at us as we tried to eat. Then two of them stopped next to our table to gossip about how one of them got yelled at. And that’s not all — another busser was tossing the tray around as if it was a baton and dropped it. Finally, the bussers would hover over the table until it seemed like you were done and for both of us, we had a bite in our mouth as they tried to take our plates. My stomach hurts and not because the food was so good that I ate it all, but because we couldn’t stop laughing. In fact, the food was ok — both of our burgers were cooked to temperature. The french onion soup wasn’t the best but wasn’t the worst either. When we got to the end and the waitress asked if we wanted desert, we harmoniously said no because we both just wanted to get out of there. To top it all off, just when we thought we had seen it all, we received the check and an ant crawls out of the check holder(mind you it’s March in Wisconsin and 25 degrees outside). Overall, the food is ok and the atmosphere was terrible.

The husband and I are HUGE fans of German food — we’ve had excellent German food over the years and I prepare it often at home. All in all, Schwefel’s was an averagely good experience. The highlight of the night for me was the liver dumpling soup and the super friendly and engaging service. Our server and other servers were incredibly sweet with our daughter. The only sour face there belong to the young hostess — she even reprimanded a buss/water boy about tablecloths — take that stuff into the back. Your diners don’t want to see you embarrass an employee. A smile would have gone a very long way. It was uncomfortable watching her rudeness. I ordered the rouladen with red cabbage and potato pancakes. While all elements were tasty — they were far too heavy handed with the salt. I couldn’t finish my rouladen it was SO salty. Bacon and pickle are inside, the gravy didn’t need to be so salty, too. My husband had the weiner schnitzel and it was pretty good though, far too thin, with far too much breading for the thinness as far as I’m concerned. He also opted for the potato pancakes and red cabbage. He found his pancakes to be far too greasy — he was right, they were. His seemed greasier than mine. There was plenty more to try on the menu and we will absolutely consider going back. I’d go back for the liver dumpling soup alone! We wish our experience this time was a touch better.

If you don’t know, Mr. R and I will pretty much check out any German restaurant within a decent vicinity, so once we knew of Schwefel’s, it wasn’t long before we hit it up. After our arrival, we headed to the bar area and ordred some lunch. I had a turkey schnitzel, quite nice, paired with a large dumpling that had a hush puppy-like texture complete with bits of meat and a hint of spice… maybe white pepper. The red cabbage also had a bit of spice to it. For this lunch meal, I opted to take part of it home for later, else I ate the whole thing and had to nap it off and give up part of my weekend. Service was good at Schwefel’s, which I believe is celebrating a milestone of 25 years in 2013. Prost!

Nice selection of German and American food with super-friendly staff and reasonable prices. The Turkey Schnitzel is popular in our family, ans are the excellent Pork Shanks. Only complaint: last time we were there both the Liver Dumpling soup and the Gravy over the bread Dumplings were far, far too salty — causing this to be a 3 star rather than 4 star review.
