My husband and I decided to hit Ojai for New Year’s. New Year’s Eve day we biked a good 13-mile loop and found ourselves in need of lunch. That’s where Marty’s came in. Didn’t look like much from the sidewalk, but we were hungry and a sandwich sounded good. Marty took our order and remarked upon my new Cannondale that I got for Christmas. Seemed like a nice guy. He said he roasted his own turkey so it wasn’t the thin-sliced deli type. We opted for the turkey club: moist turkey, avocado, bacon, jack cheese, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato on toasted sour dough. He said it was monster size, so we shared. Good call. It was YUMMY!(I can say that cuz I’m a girl.) I’d definitely go back! Just a small-town feel with a very nice owner!

Ojai — Marty’s Catering and Bakery: We decided to go camping in Ojai on the Friday night of Memorial Day weekend. We set off with no set plans except to sleep in Ojai. That never happened. Technically. While we were shopping for supplies in Von’s Carlos and Nick decided on sandwiches from their deli counter. I hate sandwiches from grocery store chains so before they could place their order I ran to the shopping door next door scoped out Marty’s Catering and Barbecue. It looked good. Big hamburgers and sandwiches. I got back as Nick was starting to place his order and convinced them to follow me. Bad meal averted. Marty’s Catering and Barbecue is a confusing name since they seem to operate a breakfast/lunch counter and bakery. The type of place you would go to in a small town to find out the word on street. I ordered a charbroiled half pound bacon cheeseburger cooked medium rare with mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, and red onion. It came with a huge side of fries. Nick got onion rings. It hit the spot and the whole meal cost me under ten bucks. I was nervous about the quality of the camping food so the burger at Marty’s was the perfect send off into the wilderness. The baked goods are another story.
