Screw this place. I go here sometimes. It has no charm. No welcoming book worm mecca feel. It is like the hospital of book stores. Sterile, cold, white. But today it took the cake! I was walking around pre– work. Reading stuff, poking around. Thinking of thoughtful gifts, etc… Organizing my intention of returning and buying gifts the next day. I had on a coat, leggings and boots… oh a shirt too. haha I shimmied my legging from inside my coat. because it got caught in my boot. I finish perusing and slowly walk to my car. I fiddle with my ipod, drink a smoothie, take my sweet ass time leaving the parking lot. When I see the lady from the bookstore pacing around my car like a crazed stalker. Staring and pointing at me like an incensed basketball coach. It was irritating. Then another woman is staring at my car– they are staking me out. Next thing I know an overweight man approaches my car window. I roll it down. «is there a reason why you are circling my car like predators?» I inquire. «Oh, wrong person he says. There was a shop lifter». Uhh, ok. The lady is glaring at me. Or to say it in Stephenie Meyer speak«glowering» at me. Is this b/c I adjusted my pant leg in your store? If you are going to be a pseudo crime fighter get some surveillance camera’s and stop treating your customers like criminals. I’m sure all shop lifters fiddle with their ipods and drink strawberry smoothies in their car pre– getaway. I will never go here again.

Most people will claim R.J. Julia is the best independent bookstore on the shoreline, but my vote goes to Emerson & Cook. If you’re going to support local business, start here. They have an excellent and fun children’s section, as well as adult fiction and non-fiction. If something isn’t in stock, the super-friendly staff will absolutely put in an order for you. I’ve also enjoyed the staff recommendations and found several great books from that section. For a very small bookstore, the choices are surprisingly varied.
