I don’t know what restaurant some of these reviewers are talking about. We have been coming here for about 20 years and we think it’s the best Chinese restaurant on the shoreline if not the whole county. The atmosphere is nice, the food is high quality and always delicious and the staff are very friendly. We drive past 2 take out restaurants to come here for take out as well.

Just ate here for dinner last night. We had two sushi rolls which were very very tasty. I got the general tso which was great, the sauce was very good and the chicken was not over breaded but still perfectly crispy on the outside. Chicken was juicy and white! Pad Tai was great too! Will return.

Just left Zhangs and my wife and 8 yr old throwing up. They ordered the Chinese food both chicken. I had curry chicken and my son teriyaki beef and we are fine so far. Never will go back to that place

It was a great place for takeout. The staff was friendly and had my order in a short time(my order was not so big though). I would def. return but prob for take out not much interest for dining in. I feel the portions are bigger if taken out as Well as better service.

I have always found the sushi to be tasty and the service to be friendly. If the restaurant is busy then the service slows down significantly. I can’t speak for the Chinese food, but the sushi is aways good.

Zhangs was always our favorite takeout and sometimes sit in restaurant for Chinese food in our area. I don’t know what happened to this place. is there a new owner? Anyway I had to toss out most of my takeout order last night due to some really odd textures, tastes and general lack of freshness. I literally gagged after eating a few bites of the Szechuan dumplings covered with a thick greasy sweet peanut sauce but I think the meat inside may have gone bad. Mei fun noodles were mushy and tasted like eggs gone bad with wilted veggies and onions. Hot and sour soup was actually sweet but swimming in grease. All went into the trash after a few bites. What to do? We are a busy working couple who enjoy an occasional takeout meal. Another local restaurant crossed off our list.

Never have I had an experience quite like this in any Asian Restaurant where a dish totally lacked flavor accept for the onions. There was no discernible garlic, ginger or spice of any kind, frankly I am still mystified, dumb foundered really. I’m intrigued enough to give them another try should I be in that area again just to see if it was a fluke. As of now, I have to conclude I got zinged at Zhang’s

Zhang’s Restaurant — Old Saybrook, CT — 6÷7÷2015 This is probably my third or fourth trip to Zhang’s Restaurant. Not much in décor to speak of… Your typical Chinese restaurant. What I do like is the wooden carved Asian Warrior statue near the entry way. Call me corny but I like taking a photo in my most bad-ass pose next to him… Although I am in the habit of making reservations, I don’t really think the one I made for this evening was necessary. The server was courteous and immediately seated us. I think mostly booths with a few tables… Actually comfortable as far as booths go… The wonton noodles were a bit stale although once they hit the yummy Hot & Sour Soup that didn’t seem to make a difference. I think if I ran the restaurant I’d make sure that the wonton noodles were fresh because a lot of people like that whole dip it in the duck sauce and wolf them down thing… We had Kung Pao Chicken which was delicious. Served with Peanuts, Watercress, Roasted red Peppers Celery chunks(I don’t care for Celery so I picked mine out) and a very flavorful Red Sauce with Hot Peppers. In addition to that we had Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and Steamed Chicken and Vegetables. We all split an order of Pork Fried Rice with extra Bean Sprouts. Can you believe they actually charged us 50 cents for the extra Bean Sprouts?! Really!!! Get a grip pal, these are things that grow in a pan with moist towels under a bed… Do you really need to charge extra for accommodating a simple request? Some times a place will miss the whole big picture thing… Despite the bean Sprout episode our dinner really was fabulous and we will be back. Great Chinese food!

My husband and I have been coming to Zhang’s for the past 14 years now! Whenever we get that urge for good Chinese Cuisine — they have never once failed us! The staff is SO nice, the service is SO quick and the food is by far the best Chinese food we have ever eaten — including beating out the ones in the Casinos! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience!

Not the best, but convenient. I have only gotten take-out here. Screwed up orders more than once. Sushi is fresh, and decent. Staff is courteous and friendly. Like most restaurants, service can wane when busy. My go to sushi joint, mainly for convenience. When I want to sit down and dine-in, I drive a little further. I do recommend, just not highly.

The worst food i have ever had the misfortune to pay for! Soggy noodles. Seafood that is tasteless. Warm beer! Shall I go on?

Yummy miso soup, sushi rolls and sides. Noticeably fresh ingredients and special requests were easily accommodated. Delicious!

Bad Asian restraunt. Uncooked and nothing to order. Chicken and broccoli was horrible. It was like they took the chicken out of the package and took Raw broccoli and served it. Better stick to Haiku Japan. After being to 104 different restruants, this is the worst one I’ve ever been to. So overall it’s a –10.0. I’ve been to a Vietnamese place 7 miles down the street near Luigis Pizza, delicious!#BestAsianRestraunt

Disappointing service under new owners. The MooShu pork was fine. The cashier who took our order was unfamiliar with the menu and sent beef sticks instead of Teriyaki beef. The sticks were terribly dried out. Almost inedible. Time to find a new Asian fave.

Beef and broccoli and scorpion bowls. Service is great. Food is delicious. I just love it here. And this is a short review because I am heading there now.

Okay, I’ve given Zhang’s three opportunities after my last review to prove that they just had a bad night… However, unless they had four bad nights all coincidentally when I visited, they have significantly gone downhill. I’m not sure if they have a new chef, cook, sushi chef, or manager but the quality has significantly declined. Two out of the last three times was for Chinese or Thai cuisine and one was for sushi. All three were disappointing. In the hot food category, their egg rolls which used to be plump and very good were smaller and greasy. The spring rolls were simply greasy. They used to have a kick ass Szechuan Dumplings appetizer, while it didn’t suck, still quite tasty in fact but it wasn’t quite was it used to be. The sauce was watery and didn’t quite have the flavor they used to have. Those were tried both times we had Chinese with same results. For sushi, what used to be fairly large portions have been reduced in size; the fish wasn’t quite as fresh, and all in all disappointing. It’s very unfortunate because this IMO was the only good Asian food restaurant in town. I’ll probably give them another shot just because of this but my expectations will be much lower. If they’ve made some kind of change recently, I hope they can reverse it.

You will be underwhelmed when you enter this chinese/asian hybrid but as soon as you are greeted by one of the very friendly servers, you will breath a sigh of relief. The Godzilla roll is filled with delicious tuna and sweet mango, topped with avocado and tobiko. The Pad Thai was solid but could have a used a little more«zhang» to spice it up. Overall, this was very enjoyable.

Came in here with a large group. We had looked at the take-out menu before coming in, and realized that the dinner menu was a bit pricier. I’d say the prices were slightly high for what it is. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is quite nice, with a large fountain in the entry and nice Chinese décor throughout the dining room. The dining room itself was a bit stuffy and warm, though. We ordered the Pu Pu Platter, which was good, but small for a large group. My entrée, Chicken with Broccoli was again good, but on the smaller side. I tried some of my wife’s chicken fried rice, that was ok as well. Nothing spectacular, but what you expect from a quality Americanized Chinese restaurant. The service was fair. They were friendly and prompt, but water glasses were never refilled, though they were all empty for the second half of the meal.

Zhang’s is a solid Chinese/Japanese hybrid restaurant. Their dishes are consistently above average while the service is fast and usually friendly. That being said, neither the food nor the atmosphere will«wow» you. I would probably give it 3.5 stars if Unilocal offered half-star increments, but the convenience and lack of good local competition make this a 4-star in my mind.

I was a little surprised by Zhang’s after reading their sign boasting that they were voted one of the top five Chinese restaurants in… I think it was the United States, but it may have just been New England. Either way, their food was not exactly world class. It was serviceable. It really should probably be a 2.5 star restaurant, but Unilocal doesn’t allow for half stars. I ordered the sesame chicken, and my fiancée had the sweet and sour chicken, I think. Mine was pretty decent. Hers was pretty disappointing. I tried some of it, and I remember it being mushy and bland.
