Boom, boom, chik, boom, boom, chik…? It’s the sound of a familiar techno beat that has been drilled into my head since the age of 12; the beginning of my serious soccer addiction. There comes a time in sports when you either take the next step up to be one of the best, or just continue playing with no intent of progress. When I was 12 years old, I was ready and made the step to become the best player I could be. I joined the team I had hoped to make, and was graced with the presence of having my first qualified soccer trainer; James Charette, Founder and Director of Wembley Soccer Academy. This was the beginning of a lifetime relationship with soccer; player, coach and fan. Rolling up in a white Ford van, «the kind plumbers and handy men drive», out jumped a man draped head to toe in Puma gear, bumping his head to techno beats blasting from the CD player. Popping open the back doors of the van, our new trainer yell, «Hey, guys my arms are broken, come help me get something!» Broken arms I thought, dang we should go help him out, so myself and five or six teammates rushed over to the techno van to help him out. Getting to the van as quickly as possible, James chuckled at us and informed us that his arms were ok, but told us all equipment will be brought out and put away by us in 8 minutes or else we would run. From here on out, our team was rarely late setting up and breaking down, because the running he demanded killed us. James instantly demanded high work ethic and nothing short of hard work. In terms of field vision, touch and soccer knowledge throughout the various forms of drills and team building, the foundation for my soccer career was established and I have James to thank. There was no downtime when we were on the pitch, even during«water breaks» we were high fiving and talking each other up to strengthen our bonds as a team and learn to act, play and be one. But what’s with the techno music? During various camps, team camps, and practices James loves to pull out the olé boom box and blast some techno tunes to up your playing speed and training to increase your ball skills and fitness level. If you want to be pushed to your limits and driven to become the best soccer player you can, I highly suggest you hire James Charette from Wembley Soccer Academy to be your trainer, if not your trainer you can attend the various camps he puts on year around. Camps vary on emphasis from; Speed and coordination, first touch and smalls games to moves, tricks and turns. For the very brave teams out there, once a year James takes 1 squad out to Cannon Beach for a week and pushes you and your team to unbelievable extremes! The Cannon Beach camp is no place for whiners or sissies, so make sure you’re prepared before you even think about the Cannon Beach Camp!
