went for a date-night on a friday because its right downtown and walking distance for us, but umm. it was interesting. the stars are for the food alone — awesome sushi, decently priced, reasonable selection of sake. the atmosphere is why I can only give it three — it was like being at a frat party in there. maybe it was just the timing, and if youre into dubstep sushi, go for it. since then, ive only brought myself to get lunch hour takeaway.

Drop by from out of town n tried dinner with family. The place is typical Asian. Sofa bench seats are old n not comfortable. Air condition was weak on a hot August day in Oneonta. Had chicken soup udon, tuna roll, eel roll, salmon roll n shrimp tempera roll for the entire family of three. Chicken not great in the soup udon — burnt taste/texture. Sushi rolls are all fine but the tiniest my wife n I had ever seen. Maybe it’s because they are reduced to $ 2.50 per roll instead of higher price. The green tea ice-cream was the highlight. Very good n not overly sweet.

The food is delicious and reasonably priced. I would recommend the shrimp tempura roll and spicy tuna roll, but the service is horrible.

Excellent service. Excellent food. I particularly enjoyed the miso soup, seaweed salad and butterfly platter. Nice atmosphere. On the house vanilla ice cream was a treat.

Tokyo has the best sushi rolls! I highly recommend the volcano, dynamite, godzilla, and sweet potato rolls. The sauce they put on these rolls is amazing. They also have great prices and excellent service. Plus, if you are still hungry after your meal, they give you free ice cream. You must try Tokyo!

I absolutely love this place! The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. The food is delicious! I always get the spicy tuna and volcano rolls. They never disappoint! Plus, they often give complementary appetizers such as fried bananas or ice cream for desert.

Ok, admittedly, not the first choice of places to eat in small town Oneonta, NY. Not bad… But not great. I ordered the mixed sashimi plus lobster roll dinner bento box and a shrimp tempura app. The dinner came with miso soup, which was warm, not hot the way I like it and served in non traditional soup bowls with(*yikes*) a spoon. The shrimp app was good with a generous portion of 5 large shrimps. The bento box was next. It was presented in typical fashion and pleasing. The fish was definitely previously frozen and had a slight fishy taste. The salmon however was good. The portions were generous, but the sashimi wasn’t «chilled» the way I like it. The service was quick, friendly and attentive on this night. The complimentary edamame and ice cream was a nice touch. Overall, satisfactory for the price.

I’m so glad that Tokyo came to town when it did; we had a serious lack of options in this town. The owner is very nice as are all the staff and the food is very good. I only eat sushi, soup and salad, so I know nothing of the other dishes, but what I’ve had has all been very satisfying. In the last few years I have been all over the state and am always down to try a sushi place and have yet to find a rival outside of Brooklyn.

This place sucked. The restaurant smelled funny, unfriendly servers and the food was poor. STAYAWAY

Fantastic Deal for Lunch. The customer service is below par and the sushi is very ok. I have been to almost every dining establishment in Oneonta and this is in the middle

I love the sushi and sashimi here, but the service is eh. Sometimes we will have a very friendly waiter, but more often than not the server can barely speak english and is pretty cold. Last time I was there the waiter messed up my friend’s order, rushed her, and then had the gall to remind her that tip wasn’t included in the bill. However, i have also had one guy who is very friendly, helpful, and got a bunch of orders just right. Their sushi is reasonably priced and they have lunch boxes which make lunch much more affordable and still tasty. Their variety of rolls is good and they have some interesting combos I like to try. In conclusion, the food is great, but the service is a bit iffy.

Tokyo Tavern has great food, decent-priced specials and a really friendly staff. I had the spicy maki combo — a HUGE platter of tuna, yellow tail and salmon sushi rolled with tempura. It’s more than big enough to share with one or two people. Tokyo is a must in Oneonta! Chic Tastes to try: Japanese soda, which comes in flavors like peach and strawberry. Have a competition to see who can open the kitschy-cool glass bottle first!

I find myself really lowering my expectations when it comes to Japanese food in upstate NY. It is usually very far from authentic, and Tokyo restaurant is no exception. The food is very americanized, and contrary to popular belief, none of the workers there are actually Japanese. The sushi is not very fresh either. The only thing I highly recommend is their negimaki appetizer.

I was skeptical to eat sushi in Upsate NY, but my family inisisted. I was disappointed. First, the service was slow, and we had to repeat our sushi and sashimi orders twice to make sure it was clear. The fish was not the freshest I have had, it did not have that cold, crisp, buttery flavor that I assosicate with great sushi.

This sushi restaurant is a little harder to rate than most of the other ones I’ve rated on Unilocal.Mostly because, well, theres really no other sushi place in the general area. I grew up a very short distance from Oneonta, and would spend my teenage years wandering around the streets. Catching a movie here, maybe going to the subway on main later at night. Sneaking a cigarette in the parking garage, you know, all the things teenagers out in the middle of nowhere end up doing. When Tokyo first opened, I was living in another state. Upon coming back, I was a little excited to learn there was some culture coming to the city of hills. The sushi has always been pretty decent. Their house rolls have some pretty crazy names, and ingredients. But as a whole are good. Even the one with banana in it. I haven’t ever ordered a meal from there, but my friends all say they’re quite good. My one biggest problem with them would have to be the sake bomb nights. They have a specific time that it should start, but the owner doesn’t want to lose out on any money. When a group of college kids come in to get their drink on, he can’t turn them away even if people are still in the middle of their meals. The local college kids all start yelling and are rather obnoxious. As a whole, I can’t stand the take over that happens when schools in session. One particular evening after just getting our sushi, a group of 14 kids come in. Yelling and generally causing a scene to be «cool.» The owner came over to us smiling and said«kids eh? they want their sake!». I was utterly unimpressed and boycotted them for a few months until my sushi craving took ahold of me.

I love sushi, but I am not skilled enough to be a sushi snob. The first time I visited, I got this crazy expensive deluxe sampler that came on a wooden boat. It was pretty impressive looking if embarrassingly large — although I totally ate it all. And it tasted quite excellent — perfectly fresh and with fine presentation. I mean, I’m not saying that serving sushi on a big-ass wooden boat is particularly authentic, but the sushi /sashimi looked decent. The appetizers are good. We usually get shumai, and those are great, or tempura — and you can’t screw up tempura. I went again last week, and it was just okay. It was slow because the SUNY kids were gone — although there was a super drunk table in the row over, so that was entertaining.(I think it was Sake Bomb night.) The server brought over our food very quickly — like, soup and salad immediately, which was fine. And then my partner’s app arrived. And then mine did. And then our dinners came within a minute of that. So — it felt quite rushed and crowded. I got the spicy sushi combo this time, which consists of three different rolls. All three rolls were sort of smushed and sad looking. Plus, they came with this orange colored sauce drizzled over them, which is not how a spicy roll should come, in my opinion. All spices should be integrated into the roll itself, not lazily added onto regular tuna /salmon /whatever rolls. I mean, it tasted fine, but it was a disappointing/lazy approach. And it made it difficult to distinguish between the different types of rolls. They do serve beer and wine(and sake, natch). Not too much of a selection. The house chard, for one, tastes yucky. I think it’s Yellow Tail.
