everything was bad. the miso soup was gross. The salad dressing was 98% mayo. The tempura tasted like it was made in McDonald’s with the same batter as the nuggets. The sushi tasted less than fresh. Although I was incredibly dissatisfied with the food, the staff was very friendly.(which is why I gave two stars) However, if I had the choice to come here or a random gas station off highway 5 for sushi, I still might choose the latter…

Great sushi, just a little bit cramped if you are sitting at the sushi bar. Loved the 007 roll

Enjoyed their chirashi, which is set up nicely in a plate, as opposed to the typical bowl. The plum wine was wonderfully sweet. The service was okay, though. The waitress could have been more attentive, especially when not very busy.

I’ve had better imitation crab California rolls than their real crab ones. It was like canned crab or something. Not to mention bland. The service was great, though. The dragon roll was my favorite. but I’ve had better. We also got number 6 and 7 on the specialty rolls menu. Uh uh. Either too bland(#6) or too much lemony sauce(#7). I did not get what I paid for.

Service is slow, wait staff is disorganized in a cramped restaurant. Food is overpriced considering the quality and ambience. Hoping there are better sushi options in LaMorinda.

Been here a bunch of times. Very, very good! I am actually now updating this review several years later since it didn’t post(they said it was too short). Anyway — go here. It is really really good. Hopefully these are enough words to allow my post to be published. Uh., Will this work?

Sushi is alright. Not my favorite. Wasn’t bad but not great. But what really gets to me is over promising. As a customer you tell someone that it will take a specified amount of time. Make sure that it happens by then. Not double the time you promised, so I can wait outside and try to figure something to do. The real thing is that if you want the sale just say how long it will take and add 5 minutes or 10 minutes. I could have gone elsewhere. I can’t give a one star rating because sushi wasn’t bad. But for someone who is in sort of a hurry get your times right

I visited this place like four or five time this year, to go and eat there. I like their sushi the most. I don’t like udon nor fried food in general so as I never ordered. I have to say their sushi meat is high quality and the chef has his own thought to create something special. I wanted to share with you one special sushi I tried there but I forgot the name. I will go back and find out the give an update here.

I wish I didn’t have to write this review as I really wanted this place to be good — we need more good places in Orinda. Bottom line, yet another Chinese-run Japanese restaurant, but unfortunately the cook there doesn’t know what real Japanese food tastes/looks like — and neither do the customers who give them 5 stars. Just one obvious example: the Tonkatsu was overcooked and charred, but even worse — they used the EXACT same batter on the tempura — ONTHETEMPURA!!! Anyone who’s ever looked at a picture of Tonkatsu vs. Tempura knows it’s two different types of batters! Also, did I mention that it was also overpriced for the food/quality? I’m really sorry that I had to write this, but I hope the owners of this place will get this fixed so that the restaurant will last and be successful.

Tiny restaurant with solid sushi. We’re new to the area and looked for a spot that would satisfy our weekly sushi take out needs. We’ve ordered twice now, and have also brought the kids for lunch. They gyoza, chicken katsu, and miso soup are my kids favorites. The rolls are made with real crab, and a great selection. Sashimi is also very fresh. Always very nice and helpful when we are there.

The place that used to be in this location — Yu Sushi — was always acceptable if not great. We didn’t realize it had changed ownership until we sat down but we were ready to give it a try. I really don’t understand how this place has four stars — and I hate giving bad reviews but I feel like warning is required and I’m being overly generous with two. The service was totally fine but the food was really not good. It was like someone had once seen a photo of Japanese food and tried to create a meal based on that photo. My wife’s udon was tasteless; my tempura was like an oven-cooked frozen fishstick; my tonkatsu was cooked into a hardened puck and none of it was seasoned in any way recognizable as Japanese food. The miso soup was full of grit and the iceberg lettuce salad was wet and dressed with a very bland dressing. We didn’t try much of the sushi — maybe it’s ok — but we won’t be coming back to find out(especially when there are other good sushi options in town).

I don’t usually pay $ 10 for my lunch, but when I do I have pretty high expectations. Even if I had had low expectations for this lunch, I still would have been extremely disappointed. And for me to actually take the time to write a negative Unilocal review, the situation has to be pretty bleak. I ordered the bento box lunch with tempura and 3 pieces of sushi. The tempura turned out to be a few feeble, shriveled veggies that were super dense, dark brown and flavorless. The sushi, tempura and salad were all SO bland and whats worse the dipping sauce was equally bland. The rice had chunks of hardened bits in it that made it almost impossible to eat. I got my food to go and at every other Japanese restaurant I have been to they offer you the soup while you wait for the rest of the food when you order a bento box to-go but here they just straight up did not give me the soup at all. Needless to say, I felt pretty ripped off. Never going back and I’m honestly not sure how this place stays in business.

Sushi Island didn’t seem to have any chirashi so i went for the lunch bento box. seating less than 10 tables inside. eats: 2 item bento(8.5) –miso soup, too much msg, couldn’t finish –salad just iceberg and some dressing –tempera(3) heavily panko breaded, no shrimp taste, msg heavy aftertaste probably premade in asia –sashimi(butterfish, salmon, suzuki) large pieces, against the grain, chewy semifresh, semireferigated. takeouts: –2.5 stars, commercially premade foods not tasty. –waitress seem bored, kept looking at cellphone.

Chinese speaking? Check. Bobbing red lanterns? Check. Watery miso soup? Check. Was just about to write this restaurant off when we finally got some sushi. Fish was high quality, cuts were professional, portions were generous, prices were more than fair. Definitely a gem on this side of the Caldecott. Better than most korean owned Japanese restaurants and even some Japanese owned restaurants. B+ in the city but for the suburbs A+.

I visited Orinda specifically to eat here. Well, more accurately to eat at their predecessor Yu Sushi. Although the waitress said it was a different owner and the menu certainly was different, it has the same set up and aesthetic as Yu. I ordered the Aloha roll, unagi nigiri, raw oysters, and tempura udon. For the first 10 minutes after my arrival I was the only customer in this small, 6 table restaurant staffed by 2 waitresses and 4 chefs. All eyes were watching as I awkwardly sipped water and smiled at my audience. Thankfully, by the midpoint of my meal the place was half full. The aloha roll was good– the salmon wasn’t as flavorful or as spicy as I’d hoped, but I really liked that they used real crab. The unagi nigiri was perfect: meaty, flavorful, tender and well seasoned. The(fresh) oysters were fresh, juicy, plump and topped with tobiko; not the best I’ve ever had, but very good. The only let down was the tempura udon. The broth was salty and had more of a wonton soup flavoring to it than a traditional Japanese udon, and looked a little sad with a few scant shreds of cabbage floating around jn the broth. The tempura I don’t think was actually tempura(flour and carbonated water/beer base) and just tasted like a fried panko crust. Overall both elements of the dish were salty but average. If you are looking for the amazing tempura udon offered by their predecessor, Yu Sushi, I would not recommend this. The pricing was decent or maybe even very fair, considering the area. All in all I’m glad I stopped in to try it out and bid farewell to Yu Sushi. Best luck to the new owners and staff– hope your family finds great success! P. s. If you’re looking for the«lion king,» salmon covered in a spicy mayo mix on top of a California roll base, look elsewhere– could not find on the menu or on list of specials.

I was at Sushi Island for lunch and I thought I knew good sushi til i came here. Now I am spoiled. The Orinda roll and the firecracker roll were awesome. William was making some killer sushi and the Oyster soda was the best Oyster shooter I ever had. Try the Cherry bomb. It is the bomb and I saw many orders of it going out. Sometimes it gets busy, but what do you expect. The best places are always busy. Plus it is a small place. Prices are fair for a decent sushi bar. I will be back with my family. Yum! BTW don’t trust reviewers with only 5 or less reviews. They are always suspect.
