So so glad we stumbled upon this gem! It’s very casual, and while there are a few places to enjoy a quick meal, seems like more of a to go place! The woman working the counter was very friendly and walked us through ordering options. There was a younger guy also working and he was friendly, accommodating and made me a great sandwich! I had the veggie sandwich(lettuce tomato onion cucumber mustard and mayo) with hard boiled egg. It was great! Also tried the macaroons and apricot pastry which were yummy! I wanted to stop in again before my flight out of Orlando but traffic didn’t permit! Next time! They also serve quantity breads, pastry, deli meats and cheeses, jams, and a variety of other German cooking ingredients and treats!

I came here to try the pretzels and left with a pretzel and some pastries. I am from Philadelphia so I cam very particular about my pretzel. Sadly the pretzels here did not meet my criteria. I know a german style pretzel is not the same as a philly style pretzel. The other pastries I had were good. I would go back to try more baked goods.

We’ve been wanting to try Backhaus for awhile now and after visiting another so so French bakery earlier in the day, I thought this would be the real fix. It was! They had a full case with with all sorts of really delicious looking things. An orgy of this and that, confections, breads, treats, and such. We went in for the chicken sammy specifically and me, I hit the desserts. Macaroons, and cakes. Yum. Chicken sandwich was everything everybody says in the reviews. German service. No real place to sit, a bench outside or two stools in the corner, they’re namely for take away or to go; though I’d be nice to rotate them into lunch from time to time.

Incredibly good chicken salad sandwich. They have a wide assortment of delicious sweets. We tried the macaroons and some sort of chocolate cake. There’s no real seating, there are some benches outside. Luckily, the place was empty and we sat in the bakery’s only available seating. It was nice to eat while looking at the lake. Prices are reasonable. They have a small selection of German products too.

Walked into this little bakery as I was in the area checking out vintage clothes shops. I already had lunch plans, otherwise I absolutely would have grabbed a sandwich or some chicken salad. I did end up getting 2 pastries to go. One was a flaky pastry with raisins, so good! The other one was also delicious, I just don’t remember what it was called or what it’s made of.

So I go in. Interesting, a German deli. Not many of these. I think. Okay. Sandwich. Cheese sandwich. Next thing I know, I’m supposed to tell them how to make it. What? I don’t know. Make it German. Whatever makes it German, I want that. They give me a look like I’m ridiculous. Like I should know. I know Italian deli. i know Jewish deli. German? I don’t know. In the end however, guess what, it was delicious.

This is a great specialty deli and bakery. They are authentic Germans that bake in house. Meats come from a company on the west coast of FL Desserts look great and taste even better. Small interior but there is a great grassy area across the street if your up for a picnic

Love it here! The ladies are always so friendly and it’s great to get a chance to speak my native tongue! The breads are just like home and the pastries are like mom used to make. Wish there were something closer, it’s still worth the drive when you have Heimweh.

I saw the sign and decided to get one of my favorite desserts, apple strudel. I brought it home and dug in and tasted a burnt flavor. I turned over my strudel and it was BURNT on the bottom. It completely ruined the flavor. Plus it was too much apple goo and not enough sliced apples. So disapointed!

Woo hoo! I finally got to try this place out :) It took long enough. I have had it bookmarked for several months so it was such a nice surprise that it just HAPPENED to be next to the Unilocal Event today! First of all, the inside is quite charming and welcoming. It’s quaint and small but the desserts literally SCREAM out to you when you enter. The display makes your mouth water. We had a chance to try the peach streusel and OH. MY. GOD. it’s my new favorite thing. Get it. Don’t question. For my lunch I got the chicken salad(which they definitely boast about) on a croissant. And they had every right to boast because it was DELICIOUS. Apparently they use greek yogurt instead of mayo and I really feel like this is the way any type of chicken/tuna/egg salad should be made now… just feels lighter on the tummy. The sandwich was quite huge and a big mess to eat. I should have asked them to cut it because there was no way it was going to be eaten neatly. Thank goodness for forks. Hubby was a fan of the pretzel rolls. :) Good joint. I am sure we will be back again.

Cute place. Very nice. Enjoyed chicken salad on a pretzel roll. I think next time I will try it on a croissant. There are a few seats inside so you can enjoy the view of the lake as you eat.

Awesome German desserts and meats at this busy but quiet little shop! I always stop by after visiting the Hammered Lamb for brunch a few doors down. There is a small parking lot next door, but I have always had good luck finding street parking right in front of the bakery. The employees are always very warm and welcoming. There are a ton of desserts to choose from, but the peach streusel is my favorite having a perfect combo of sweet and tart. I always take my desserts to go. There is very limited seating inside, and by very limited, I mean 1 table and a few stools at a countertop.

This is such a great place! My family visited Germany a few years back and this bakery reminded me so much of that trip. The pastries, breads and coffee are fantastic and I enjoyed selecting a few German grocery items. My daughter and I were lucky to find seating and really enjoyed our breakfast in the bakery.

I live right down the street from here and absolutely LOVE that I can get so many delicious fresh baked goods, bread, and liver wurst within walking distance! This place is a cute little gem across from Lake Ivanhoe. Their pastries are delectable and their bread is heavenly. If you are a fan of liver wurst(the delicious, creamy, spreadable kind) this place carries some of the best I’ve ever tasted. Buy it and some of their day old bread rolls and you’ve got yourself some pretty stellar lunches ahead. Trust me! They also sell an ancient grain bread, a gluten free bread, and a protein bread for fitness nuts! They’re pretty awesome.

My son and daughter-in-law brought me a piece of their cherry struessel, and it was so yummy, I had to try them myself. My husband and I stopped in for coffee and a snack/lunch today, and we were not disappointed. My husband requested whatever sandwich they considered the house specialty, and he loved it. I believe it was called Leberkase, and we were told it was the ubiquitous German sandwich filling. The lady that helped us was wonderfully friendly and informative. The young man helping her was also very nice. I had the bee sting pastry(a new one for me) and it was a wonderful concoction of brioche sandwiching Bavarian cream and topped with almonds. Fantastically rich! My only small complaint is that there is only one little table to sit at, so be prepared to take your goodies with you.

4 Stats for a chicken salad sandwich that blew me away! I was surprised to find parking right next to the shop right at noon on a Friday, but even if you don’t see parking out front there’s a small lot across the street by the park. I walked in and was speechless gazing at the glass cabinet of delicious-looking desserts. The woman behind the counter helped me by explaining a few of the German dishes and when I said I wanted a sandwich on a croissant she recommended the chicken salad sandwich. When she told me they use Greek yogurt instead of mayo I was a bit worried. Why would you remove the mayo?!? And then I tasted it. WOW. I loved the slight tartness of the yogurt paired with the chicken and walnuts. There was something sweet in the salad that may have been grapes or raisins. I ended up asking them to wrap half of the sandwich to go and it made for a great snack later. One thing to note is there is very limited seating. This may be more of a take-out lunch spot. Another note is that I’ve ordered a few of their bakery items in the past and felt they were a tad dry and dense but I’d be very open to trying them again. Either way– I’ll definitely be back for that sandwich! Mmmmm!

I have read the reviews and I have been wanting to visit and I am so glad I did. The struessel was so delicious. The assortment is fantastic. The employees were so friendly and made us feel very welcome. I look forward to future visits and trying more of their offerings. I took advantage of the day old bread selections and they offered to slice the bread as well. Their breads are fantastic and they are made with no preservatives which is great as well!

I stopped in on my way to have some coffee at Austin’s Coffee & Film to grab a loaf of of my favorite bread, the multigrain, and for the first time I had a less than stellar experience here at Backhaus. There were two older women in the bakery when I arrived and the young man waiting on them has the WORST customer service skills I have ever witnessed. He was too busy telling them what HE didn’t like about their breads instead of telling them what is good. There was a young lady working with him and she was very pleasant to deal with and I actually felt sorry for her. I told the two ladies what I thought of the bread I was buying and they followed my lead and bought a loaf based on my recommendation alone. As I was paying for my bread I commented to the young lady waiting on me and made sure to say it loud enough for her co worker to hear that he should stay in the back making the pastries and let her sell the products. It brought a smile to her face as well as the two ladies that were being waited on by him. NOTETOTHEOWNER: Whoever that young man is I met today… His customer service skills are HORRIBLE and he is a POORREFLECTION on your business. REPLACEHIMASAP because in 5 minutes of being near him, he grated on my nerves and I will NEVEREVER let him wait on me. I drive from the UCF area to your store just for my bread and if you keep him around, I will likely find another bakery NOMATTERHOWGOODYOURBREADIS just to avoid dealing with him.

This used to be called Yalaha but I guess they split off from the owners and renamed it Backhaus. The food doesn’t seem that much different. They have german style deli sanwiches, hot coffee and lots and lots of pastries and also some cookies and scones. It’s a good place to get a snack or possibly lunch. The cookies are pretty creative, a few are made with herbs like rosemary and others. There are no seats inside just a few stools at a counter and a great view of Lake Ivanhoe. I hope they do well with their new name.
