Placed an on-line order at 7:00 for the first available delivery time of 8:15. Called at 8:45 to check the status and was told that they forgot to put paper in the fax machine. He didn’t seem to think it was a big deal.(I would have bet $ 5.00 that he was going to say«dude» at some point). To be fair he offered to take my order right then, but I had to be at work in 15 minutes.

How in the world did I grow up in Overland Park and never try Wheat State Pizza until now? Unbelievable! I ordered the thin wheat crust veggie dreams and it was absolute heaven. I attempted numerous times to save some for later, but the veggies kept calling my name. I enjoy the small squared pieced slices. It makes me feel like I’m eating more then I actually am… or so I will continue to believe. They conveniently have online ordering and delivery for days when dialing a number and actually talking to someone seems like an inconvenience.

I wanted to love it… I really did. However, I’ve never had a correct order yet. The staff is ridiculously stoned and/or slow and can’t seem to get a single order right. I gave this place multiple tries, but I’m done. The last time I called, they said it would be 45 mins. And hour and a half later, I called to check on the pizza(I live less than one mile from the store) and they said they had tried to deliver to my neighbor’s house and it was rejected. Well… duh. They wrote down the wrong address despite me going over my address multiple times when I ordered because of previous problems.(they must use the same order delivery system as Pizza Hut because the first time I ordered from them, it defaulted to an old address in the same neighborhood — despite me never having ordered from them before). Anyhoo, they said they’d get the pizza right over to me — and then they showed up with the original pizza they’d sent out the door 2 hours earlier. I couldn’t believe it. And it cost me around $ 18 or a medium. Pfffft. The Other Place and Maloney’s are in the same neighborhood and while they don’t deliver, they have much better pie. Sorry Wheat State, I gave you 4 – 5 tries over the last 2 years and you blew it every single time.

I lived two blocks away from Wheat State and never ate there for over a year. When I found out I was moving, I rushed to try all of locales I had driven by a million times but never tried. I ordered a large Hawain pizza – ham and pineapple on the thick crust for carry-out. It was a little pricier – for one pizza almost $ 18. It was really worth it though. I loved the whole wheat crust, and it was super tasty without a layer of oil sitting on the top. They deliver too and have a few small booths and tables where you can dine in and enjoy a cold beer or hard ice cream cone for dessert.

I almost forgot about Wheat State bc we haven’t eaten there in a while… but yummy! I saw another review of it that jogged my memory and my appitite… especially bc it’s lunchtime and I’m starving. They make a great pizza, with lots of toppings(if that’s what you’re into.) Sometimes it’s a bit much for us, bc they really do pile them on. But all the ingredients are fresh and flavorful, especially their good selection of veggies. The pizza made with cream cheese was good, but I thought it could use more cream cheese bc it was kind of bland. We usually get the cheesesticks bc they are delish, and if you want you can add a topping. The cheesesticks give you an extra surprise bc not only do they have cheese on top(like most) but there is a layer of cheese(and your extra topping) baked in the middle of the crust. YUM! They have great wheat crust, which is hard to come by at most places. Don’t plan on eating there bc there’s basically no where to sit, so take it home or order delivery; they’re always on time with your fresh and hot pizza. As for their dessert sticks, I’m not a fan, but my husband loves them. They’re too topping-y for me; I’m of the crowd that likes Pizza Hut-style cinnamon sticks; the ones here are more like apple pie filling baked into the crust. Potato po-ta-toe.

Hmmmm… Wheat State yummy pizza. I love their pesto sauce and the wheat hand tossed crust. You could put anything else on it with these two bases and it still would be incessantly good. They always put a lot of toppings on and their specialty pizza makes it easier to decided what to order.

I finally made it over to Wheat State Pizza tonight. Usually I’m pretty loyal to Papa Keno’s but I’ve been reading on Unilocal and in the Star that they’re going downhill. So since we’ve been wanting to try Wheat State tonight was the night. We went with the Farmer which was a 3 meat pizza with some veggies. I wanted to go with the 5 or 6 meat pizza with no veggies but I compromised with Stella, the wife, and got some veggies. We also got the wheat hand tossed crust because you don’t ever get a chance to have a wheat crust. We got the pizza as takeout and got it home. I almost threw up in my mouth on the drive back when I saw some dude had affixed a giant Colts logo with a giant number 18 on his van. Who is that gay for a football player, Peyton Manning, of all people? Some dude who lives at 77th and Conser apparently is, so now you know. I nearly lost my appetite after that. But, when we got home and opened up the pizza the appetite was restored. It really was a pretty pizza, I almost went Biggs on it(is that too dated of a reference?, I didn’t want to say I wanted to have sex with it). Not only did it have the looks, it had the taste. It really was a wonderful pizza. A small quibble would be that I felt it could use a little more sauce. But otherwise I don’t really have any complaints. For any Nebraskans reading this and love Valentino’s shrimp pizza. Well, Wheat State has shrimp as a topping. Next time when I’m not so hungry I’m going to try a shrimp pizza. One other thing to mention is Wheat State doesn’t appear to have a liquor license. So, you’re going to be stuck with Pepsi products if you want to quench your thirst. They don’t really have a lot of seating so odds are you’re going to take your pie home so you can have a beer or glass of wine there.

Since discovering this place in downtown Overland Park, it has filled all of our carry-out pizza needs. They use great quality toppings, and you can choose between either a traditional white or wheat crust in hand-tossed or thin styles. Pretty much only getting white crust at most places, we have only ever ordered the wheat and have not been given any reason not to. While I normally prefer thin crust, the hand-tossed wheat is far superior to the thin. They have a wide range of specialty pizzas with interesting names and topping combos. The wife is a Hawaiian pizza nut and their offering with ham, spinach and pineapple is awesome. My favorite is called the Strangler, which is basically a BBQ chicken pizza(the Wrangler) covered with hot sauce. We also enjoy their Wheatsticks, but the Wheatsticks with cheese can be a tad bit greasy. This location has some small tables setup outside for seating in the summer. They recently added some booths for inside seating along with some bar stools. According to signs, there is also ice cream to be had. has also recently been redisgned to allow for online ordering from their many locations in Kansas.
