Sorry they closed. This was definitely my favorite restaurant in Kansas City. Bye Bye Louis Mueler.

After eating here I am a little upset, I generally like to try different items off the menu. After having the chicken fried steak I will not eat anything else here. Awesome, but ask for extra gravy. Love this place.

Great lunch of sweet chile rubbed pork chop, southern green beans and jalapeño mac and cheese. Perfectly grilled chop with sweet and spicy glaze, beans were smoky with lots if bacon and the mac was creamy with just enough jalapeño kick. Sat in the bar so didn’t experience the whole restaurant. Service was excellent. Will order and review the bar b q next time I’m in KC. Will definitely be back.

Great place for a business lunch. Open seating in the bar. Makes for a very relaxing break from the office. Huge plates. Amazing variety ranging from tacos to burnt ends to salads. Something for everyone here, I promise! I tried their Texadelphia sandwich… basically a philly cheese-steak but with PRIMERIB. Oh. My. Goodness. Way too much food for just one meal, but delicious and filled with melted cheese, mushrooms and ribbons of thinly sliced meat. Seemed a shame to add BBQ sauce, but I love me some extra sauce. Fries were over-seasoned. Next time I’ll try a different side. The burnt ends my co-worker had looked amazing. Big chunks! And lots of them. Prices are really reasonable considering how much food you get. Friendly waitstaff and clean dining room.

I grew up in Texas– I’ve lived all over the state. Out west, Central, and even in Southeast Texas. The food is varied, interesting, and always delicious. Same at Wil Jenny’s. The menu is as eclectic as Texas, but will not disappoint. The Louie Mueller is the most creative sandwich I’ve ever eaten. The sweet corn pudding, the green chile Mac & Cheese, and the beans are all wonderful. Great environment — incredibly evocative of Texas, with attentive service to match. Come: you won’t be disappointed.

Not too bad. I had the prime rib. As Prime ribs go I thought it was pretty POOR. And very overpriced. But the service was very good, food was ok, overall I was not impressed, but not disappointed either.

6÷22÷2013 — We took care of the MEX next time. The guacamole appetizer was obviously made fresh. The chips had a oil sheen them from just being removed from the fryer they were both delicious. The calamari was delicious not rubbery and lightly breaded with a chipotle mayo dipping sauce. Be careful of the fried jalapenos they still have the seeds of them and will be hot so don’t eat too many at once. The wife ordered taco and enchilada lunch. She said the pork was absolutely deliciously perfect. She also had the skirt steak taco as well as it was delicious. I ordered the combo fajitas, chicken and skirt steak, and they were bountiful and wonderful. Plenty of good food at a fair price! We will be back for the TEX next time!!!

I’ve been coming to Wil and Jenny’s frequently over the past three years. I must say that this place has some of the best comfort texmex food available. Even their meatloaf is surprisingly fantastic. I’ve had everything on the menu a few times by now. The spicy armadillo eggs, their name for jalapeño poppers, and their guacamole are both awesome. As for the meals, i love the meatloaf and chicken fried steaks which i haven’t found a better example of anywhere than here. As for the desserts, the apple crisp and the double fudge brownie sundae will definitely top you off. The service here has always been good to me and the chefs are willing to do offthemenu adjustments as long as the place isn’t jammed. If you’re looking for a low impact, relaxing, and good eats, you wont go wrong here. It is my #1 place to go.

I love overpriced dishes that are only mediocre. Throw in sub-par service and you know I’ll be coming back for more. Not. Ordered a few appetizers(Bob Wills — $ 7, Buffalo Wings — $ 8, Calamari — $ 9) and they were all okay. The dip came with 3 flour tortillas, the buffalo wings were too dry and burnt and the calamari dish should be renamed as «Texas Fried Peppers», as there were all but 4 pieces of actual calamari in there, I kid you not.

As a former Texan, I tend to judge a tex-mex place by it’s margaritas and queso. While Wil Jenny’s still need to work on their lemon-lime concoctions, the queso certainly stole the show. I’m not talking about that orange«cheese» kind of queso, I’m talking about the white, fluffy cheese with a strong kick of jalapeño kind of deliciousness that Wil Jenny’s version exhibits. To top it off, the queso came with real chips instead of those flimsy things that break off into your bowl. Next up, I had the street tacos with soft corn tortillas and my dining partner had the braised pork enchiladas. Matt, our wonderful bartender, stated that they were the best tex-mex fare on the menu so we had high expectations. Both entrees came out piping hot with an abundance of juicy meat and just enough fixings to flavor them. Not too much cheese, not an overload of onion and just the right amount of jalapenos. All in all, the experience at Wil Jenny’s was top notch. The manager on duty came by to check on us, the bartender was attentive and both made it a point to learn our names. We felt as though we had a little bit of «home» in Kansas City and we’ll definitely be back(on UT gameday… did I mention it’s a Texas bar?).

I want to like Wil Jenny’s…really I do! I’ve been twice, and both times, I’ve liked the appetizer better than my entrée. The first time, I had the queso dip, which was decent, and then I had the steak wrapped in bacon. I ordered medium and it was way undercooked, but I didn’t want to be that girl that sends back her food, so I ate as much of it as I could. I figured that maybe I went on an off night, so I figured I would give it another shot. As an appetizer, we had the Spicy Armadillo Eggs, which are jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and bacon. Love them! For my entrée, I figured I would try steak again so I ordered the fillet. My friend ordered the same. We both ordered them medium well(I thought I learned my lesson last time by ordering medium) and again… bloody and undercooked. I expressed my concern to our waiter about how this was my second visit to the restaurant, and it just seemed that the kitchen staff doesn’t know how to cook a steak. He sent the manager over who offered us a free dessert. They also took the steaks back to the kitchen and cooked them a bit longer and then they were fine. The guys were satisfied with their food… they stuck with the mex/bbq side of the menu. I figure I will give Wil Jenny’s one more shot! I’m just not going to order steak!

interesting… I really liked the design of the restaurant, but the food was just okay and the service was pretty horrible. we ordered the Sunday night family fajitas to share and I know we didn’t get everything that was supposed to come with it. we would have mentioned this to our server if he had ever come back to check up on us. instead he was standing near the kitchen chatting with his co-workers. I did thankfully find someone else who was willing to fill our water glasses and bring us more salsa. the steak and chicken were pretty good but all of the other food that came with it wasn’t great. there are too many better places to go so I don’t think I’ll be returning.

CREATIVEMENU: There are unexpected dishes on Wil Jenny’s menu such as «Campfire Trout Almandine», a ranch style take on the classic French dish. Others include: Texas fried calamari, Chardonnay potato dumplings, smoked bologna and pickled shrimp. MYDINNER: I ordered Burnt Ends(caramelized brisket with BBQ sauce) with sides of Sweet Corn Pudding and Texas Ranch Pintos for $ 13. The meat portion was more than I could finish at dinner. The sweet corn pudding was amazing! The Texas ranch pintos didn’t live up to their billing. Overall very savory and filling with average BBQ sauces. DRINKPAIRING: I would normally pair a BBQ meal such as this with a Texas brewed Shiner Bock beer. In my self imposed 2011 refrainment from such beverages I paired it with a Big Red soda. I would NOT recommend pairing Big Red soda with BBQ. WHAT’S IN A NAME? Wil Jenny’s is a combination of the names of the owners’ children. My friend and I joked that using this same naming convention, her family’s restaurant would be «CaitlynJaciJoelHolly’s». VERDICT: There are enough surprises on Wil Jenny’s menu to keep regulars interested and the BBQ is solid enough to warrant a one-time stop. Thanks to Clark S. for the recommendation.

I grew up on the backroads of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana while my dad worked as a wildcatter in the oil industry, I say this to establish my credentials for reviewing a texas roadhouse like Wil Jenny’s. Payday was Friday so on Friday night every roughneck in the general area would descend on roadhouses with their families for chicken fried steak and copious amounts of the local brewed beverage. Wil Jenny’s is Not your typical Texas Roadhouse, everything at Wil Jenny’s is much nicer than you would find at a typical Texas roadhouse and the prices are adjusted to reflect the JoCo amenities and location. There are 2 items on Wil Jenny’s menu that are worth making the trip for: — Chicken Fried Steak — One of the top in KC… Not that there are many places with a decent CFS in KC… We are a few hundred miles too far north. The Wil Jenny’s version is $ 13 and is plenty big for 2 people with an average appetite. — Carne Asada — A large, marinated steak served with a side of 2 cheese enchiladas for ~ $ 15. This entrée is almost as good as you would find in Dallas or Austin. This entrée is ubiquitous in Texas but I have had a hard time finding a decent Carne Asada in KC so Wil Jenny’s is my go to place for this dish. I have dined with people who have ordered the bbq and sandwiches and they seemed content with their order. I have a long list of KC establishments that I would choose over Wil Jenny’s for BBQ but I have never heard anyone complain.

I added the pulled pork and burnt ends to my repertoire here. Burnt Ends had the carmelized soda treatment they give the ribs. Slightly sweet and smokey… and unlike most offerings around here… tender inside. The pulled pork was slightly smokey and well seasoned… so that was a hit for me as well.

This is a restaurant dedicated to all food Texas. That’s why the odd combination of cuisines. BBQ and Tex-Mex, both huge in Texas. With that in mind, I’m reviewing Wil Jenny’s for the BBQ. The restaurant has a stone façade out front and high beamed ceilings on the inside. A very attractive space, very Texas. If the thought of eating with stuffed dead animals over your head is not what you would consider a relaxing environment, conducive to quiet conversation… this may not be your Zen spot. But, hey, I got no beef with taxidermy. Ha, Ha. I don’t care who you are, that right there was funny. For my meal, I chose the«Davy Crockett«pulled pork sandwich. This sandwich is served topped with coleslaw; Aka Carolina style or Memphis style, depending on who you speak to. Don’t bother speaking to my husband, he’s always sure he’s right. But I’m the one writing, so it’s Memphis style. It is my all time favorite. Brownie points to any establishment that offers it as a pork option. As you’re probably aware… I dig Pig! I was unaware that they ate it that way in Texas, but who am I to complain? I was just glad it was on the menu. Everyone’s preferences are different when it comes to BBQ, so I’ll tell you what I thought, and maybe that will be exactly the way you want it. Hopefully this will aid you in your decision to go or no go. The pieces of pulled pork were a bit too large, meaning that, as I took a bite, the pieces of pork would fall out in big chunks. A little more attention to the pulling would have gone a long way in making it easier to eat. There was a smoky flavor, but mostly as you exhaled; Like pork cigarettes, but the only smoke rings were on the outside of the meat. For my side, I chose the sweet corn pudding. I love corn pudding. Done well, it’s creamy and cheesy, with a little cornbread for texture. Always served hot. Unfortunately, mine was served in a small bowl and was pasty and luke warm. Not so appealing. I will say that my husband also had a side of the corn pudding, but his was served on his plate. His was hot and melty. So, perhaps how it is served would be of importance. The sandwich was served on a quality bun that was toasted to perfection. This minor detail is usually overlooked, but very important. The toasting prevents your sauce from getting your bun soggy. My husband ordered the Dr. Pepper baby back ribs. He stated that the ribs were very meaty, with little or no fat. The sauce was flavorful, and slightly sweet. They had a good amount of smoke, and they passed the key test. Did he gnaw the meat off the bone? A resounding yes. We shared a side of brown sugar pit beans. They were very tasty. There was perhaps too much brown sugar, but the flavor was good. Not Fiorella’s Jack Stack good, but who’s are? They do have some great daily specials at the bar.
