They need to get more traditional Mexican food, mainly all seafood, and no English speaking servers!

Went here on a whim… Drove by and it smelled delicious, and we were not disappointed! We live in the L.A. area and obviously have had our fair share of Mexican food, and we were happy not only with the quality of food, but quantity as well! My husband ordered steak fajitas and there was easily enough for two, and I got a shrimp taco platter. Both came with rice and beans and both were under $ 12! My tacos had fresh ingredients, the shrimp were plump and there was a great kick to the creamy chipotle sauce. The rice had lots of flavor and the beans were cooked perfectly. My husband’s fajitas were also fantastic! Juicy steak, fresh peppers and onions, and all came out sizzling on the platter. I believe that the tortillas may also be homemade, as they were not perfect-store-bought-looking, but either way were really tasty! Light, perfectly cooked, hot, and fresh! To top it all off the restaurant itself is charming, clean, and inviting and the staff were very sweet! We also got to catch the beginning set of a live singer, which was very nice. All in all, if we every find ourselves up in this area again and craving Mexican food we will be back!

I always come in for their chilaquiles with egg. Pretty big size, I always have left overs. The lady is really nice and makes my visit pleasant. Their milkshakes and coffee are really good. I haven’t had anything else here.

I couldn’t rate this place because I didn’t go in.
So ignore the 2 stars. Unilocal didn’t let me leave it Blank. We’ve been craving Mexican food for a while now and finally had the chance. Unfortunately, I literally sat in the car in the back parking lot with my wife while we read the Unilocal to decided if we were going to go in. We didn’t read anything recent and positive so we skipped off elsewhere. Hope someone posts something soon so we know.

This place was not terrible, but I did not fall in love. We had the mole, which was definitely good, but not life changing– how I like my mole to be– and the 7 Mares. The 7M was also good and had nice tender pieces of fish in it, along with two substantial crab legs in a tomato broth. I had the margarita and it was very sugary and definitely from some kind of mix. That was the biggest disappointment. The guac was average. We didn’t even finish it, which is just guac-acide, but to boot the chips were a bit rancid. The waitress changed them out and provided us good service, but something in the kitchen was not quite right obviously. The handmade corn tortillas fit the bill, above all.

Came in our way home from church today. Definitely the only white guy in there, not that it’s a problem. Was kinda hoping this meant some good authentic Mexican food. There didn’t seem to be a hostess so we sat ourselves. Service was ok, but not anything special. Prices are very reasonable. The guy sitting next to us was so put off by his bowl of Menudo he actually turned around to tell us not to order it. Now for the food. I ordered the chilaquiles with the green sauce and my wife had the rancheros huevos. Food took awhile which meant I had too many chips. Their salsa was pretty dang good though. When my chilaquiles came I was ready to grub. Took 2 bites and thought there was something weird about the taste. My wife took a bite and thought it was ok. I realized it was the smell of the food and less of the taste that had me second guessing my plate. This seems really gross, but it had a hint of bile smell about it. Only had chilaquiles two other times, both with a red sauce, but I’m pretty sure no food should smell that way. «Borrowed» half off the tortilla that came with my wife’s rancheros huevos to make a little burrito with the rice and beans on my plate, both of which were good. My wife’s food was good, mine left much to be desired. Don’t think we’ll be back.

The food is good but not great! Typical Mexican fare, clean, homemade chilaquiles with real tortillas! Great coffee! I’ll be back.

Food was not only bad but cold. Margaritas are sweet with no alcohol taste more like a smoothie. Don’t know why this place is highly rated.

Authentic. Food was pretty good. If you want white meat in chicken dishes, go elsewhere. Salsa had some kick. Very good. Rice and beans bland. Karaōke was so bad it was good. Pretty funny! Be prepared to get looks if you’re a Gringo.

I came to this restaurant for dinner with the family. It was 6:30PM on a monday night and the restaurant was fairly empty, for Oxnard that’s acceptable due to the slow foot traffic in the downtown area. We were a table of 7. For it being so empty the service was extremely slow. I was hungry so I obviously was very annoyed. To start, we ordered the guacamole and it was very tasty. Fresh avocados and delicious salsa. So far so good with the food. I ordered one tostada de ceviche and one shrimp tostada. The cevich was ok and the shrimp tostada was not good. Next time I know not to order either. My brother ordered the mole poblano which had a side of chicken and rice. It was good, nothing exceptional. The highlight of the table and the reason there will be a subsequent visit to this restaurant is the shrimp tacos. I was pleasantly suprise by them. My mom and brother each order them and I was able to sample. The shrimp taco had a special sauce on top that was just amazing. The toritllas were freshly made. The prices are more than reasonable. Compared to other restaurants of its type I want to say it’s probably one of the cheapest. Word of caution: Their maragaritas are not good. If the owner is reading this pelase be more creative with your cocktails and don’t rely on generic margarita mix. We live in a city with an abundance of fruits and citrus! Use them! Anyway, If you want alcohol just go safe and order a beer! Although service was slow I must say that the waitress was extremely nice. She even brought us free dessert at the end! who does that?! Extra points for that!

We had an awful experience. We’re from out of town and found this place on Unilocal. We walked in and weren’t even greeted. Finally we sat down and karaōke started. It was EXTREMELY loud and we asked them to turn it down. They did for that song and then the next song they turned it even louder than before. The waitress never came back so we got up and walked out.

Great food Mexicano typico! The carnitas(as a dinner not tacos) were great. The Horchata was one of the best I ever had. Yes they had cerveza Victoria and everything reasonably priced. From NY so I know Mexican food been here since Sunday, this puts El Torito and Yolanda’s to shame. I knew I was in the right place when I saw an ALL spanish written menu :)

Okay first of all, the margarita. Ya know those mixers they have in the grocery store, and then the ones that already have the tequila in it? I’m pretty sure that’s what I was served. It was thick, syrupy, way too sugary, and I couldn’t detect any tequila. Disgusting, gross, and I had to actively try to finish it just so I could switch to my water. I think they only have a beer license so that’s the best they can do… skip it and get a beer. Second of all, the karaōke. Not sure why there was karaōke, but that’s cool. It’s set up for it with a TV with lyrics, the guy has a lot of CDs from all genres. Unfortunately, he was BLASTING, he was the only one singing, he was the only one who cared(there were only two families in the entire place and neither showed any interest in the slightest), and he had a very strange playlist of paisa, 70s american, and hip hop. Yea, I’m not sure either. Asked to turn it down and they did, to loud instead of deaf. Once the check came, it was turned back up. Chill out dude. Take it to the bar across the street or something, yelling just to be heard by the guy sitting next to me is not enjoyable, not at a restaurant that doesn’t have a full alcohol license, and not on a late Sunday afternoon. Third, the service was pretty fantastic. Quick, accurate, very nice, and the waitress had a nice smile. Definitely a perk. Fourth was the food, which was pretty darn tasty. The beans and rice were homemade authentic tastiness. Not sure about the strip of salad, but at least it separated the entrée from the sides. I got the shrimp and squid a la diabla. It was pretty hot! Just the perfect level of very hot for me, which is enough to numb my taste buds and make a normal palate tap out. Oh, and the chips and salsa were good. The salsa was spicier than a chain restaurant, kind of watery, and fresh. Fifth deserves it’s own paragraph. Homemade tortillas! Flour or corn, thick, fresh. Wish I could have taken some home with me! Hm, between this and the food, they popped out another star.

A step up from the other Mexican restaurants in the area. The fish tacos are good, but the shrimp tacos(made with imported Peruvian shrimp) are the best!, keep you wanting More More! Furthermore, the new management under the leadership of Mr. Gomez really marks the difference, making you feel right at home.

Just came home from dinner based on the rave reviews. Ordered the guacamole and it had way too much lime in it. Cabo’s table side guacamole is far superior. We tried the tacos dorado one order chicken and one beef to try. The beef was so chewy and the chicken was blah and the shells were store bought. My husband ordered the special chile relleno and it came smothered in a sauce that was sweet which made the relleno really soggy. I will say the chips and salsa where good. The waitress was wonderful. We will not be returning.

The best margarita & guacamole in Ventura County by far. The filet Con Mole rice & beans was outstanding. The Camarones a Diabla was very spicy & delicious. Great prices, good service, must try!

Fortunately for me, Oxnard is blessed w/an abundance of seafood eateries. In particular, there are countless Mexican-style mariscos restaurants in Downtown Oxnard alone. Meson Viejo is one of those restaurants. The ambience is very welcoming and friendly. The wait-staff makes you feel right at home and they genuinely care about your visit being a pleasant one. Kudos to them for that. We seemed like long-time comadres after all the chatting we did by the time we left once, hahah! As for the food, they have a variety of dishes, most of them being your typical Mexican-style ones such as tortas, tacos, tostadas de ceviche, aguaschile, langostino, pescados a la parrilla, fajitas, and camarones. I usually go there for the camarones a la diabla. Satisfying and delicious. It’s what I would expect from most restaurants in that area though. They usually come peeled, but I like them w/the shell still on, so I appreciate that they gladly accommodate. The portions are very generous. Definitely feel they could charge more than they do, but then again, the fact that they have great prices only adds on to the list of reasons to come! Also, one of my friends mentioned that his chicken fajitas may have possibly been the best fajitas he’s had in his life. Looked appetizing, so I stole a bite. The chicken was very succulent and flavorful. He may be on to something! The tostadas de ceviche, from my experience, have been hit-or-miss. I have tasted them on two different occasions and were both completely different experiences. Then there are the drinks, of which I’ve tried a michelada and a margarita. They were ok. Being that I love margaritas though, I probably wouldn’t order one from here again, knowing I could go to a few other places w/way better ones. I’d stick to the food for sure, or just a beer to complement. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning the décor. Cute, small bar area and two TVs for you sports fans. The layout has been well thought out. There are vibrant colors and murals on the walls. Plenty of detail in the artwork to look @ and admire. Nice touch to an overall gratifying experience.
