I played Sea Mountain many times in its prime in the early ’90’s and many, many, many times during the 4 years when I recently lived on Hawaii. Hilo has a nice 9-holer and a big 18 hole course. But I would often drive an hour and a half to play Sea Mountain. I guess I’m an 8 – 10 handicapper… good drive about 250. At Sea Mountain I played almost every club in my bag throughout each round. I found every hole to be totally unique and most interesting… plus some breath-taking vistas unlike anywhere else! Yeah…some fairways can get crusty… bare spots here and there. A few greens are spotty. So just move your ball to avoid those spots!(you will see weedy tufts of grass in some bare fairways /do NOT hit your ball off of these! They’ll stop your club dead!) With a stiff ocean breeze it’s a ball! Clubhouse has full array of bottled drinks… usually icy water on #8 tee by #2 green and #12 or #13. While on #17 green pause to look back up the always-green fairway… past bordering monkeypod trees… meandering pond… to the huge, looming volcanic mounds…(this scene is on my checks now!). Guaranteed, it will be an unhurried, memorable round! Dean PS: posted a shot of #11 green. South just a few miles if there are non-golfers in your party is Whittington Beach Park for picnic, fishing(no license required), watching turtles going in or out of tidepool with tide(rest facilities /tables)

I consider this course as effin, «AWESOME! Fair price, fair ball lie(s), fair yardage/hole, and always enough time to «tune um back.» I absolutely love the carts, the amount of power they have, the pace of play(since they’re is hardly anyone playing!!!) WHYYYYY? THISCOURSEISBEAUTIFUL!!!

Really fun golf course! Conditions are not the best(greens were pretty bad), but don’t let that keep you from experiencing this course. Sea mountain is affordable, right on the ocean, and provides a full 18 hole course spread out over a large area so it keeps you moving. Course takes you over and under old bridges, through wooded areas with cool rock formations, and provides great scenery the entire time. $ 25 flat rate includes golf cart. This course is cooler friendly so bring some brewskis(no beer sold on location). Located on the coast of south east Hawaii, this course give you a great reason to come check out this very remote, and very beautiful part of the Big Island.

Where to begin… First, the location is spectacular if you like remote and jungle with views of the Pacific Ocean.(This earned the 2 stars.) Second, the course condition is something better described as neglected and shameful given the views of the Pacific Ocean on several of the holes. Third, the $ 25 round fee with cart(gas powered no less) was worth it given you are on Hawaii where other golf courses charges 6 times that much. Fourth, club rental runs $ 25 for clubs that are rusted and 20+ years old! Shame on us for not bringing our clubs this trip. Fifth and last, no beverage or snack service on the course made for a very hot round. Be sure to bring your own snacks and water should you play here. Would I play there again? If I were in the area and wanted a cheap round or was bringing people who weren’t that good but who wanted to be outside and near ocean views. 7÷23÷2014

It’s challenging to give a rating for this course. It is VERY difficult to complain about golfing by the ocean for $ 20 per round – cart included! The saying, «you get what you pay for» applies and does not apply here at the same time. Pros: The price is amazing and the ocean and valley views are lovely All skill levels are welcome Greens fee include cart access Cons: This course is pretty far removed from most of the sites on the big island The course itself was rather dry and the greens are VERY, VERY slow(hard to read for someone who is used to the fast rolling greens in California) If you are looking for a 5-star course, I would pass on Sea Mountain. However, if you are in the area and looking for a very inexpensive round, playable for pretty much all skills levels, nice views, and a location that lets you check out the Black Sand Beach and honu after your round, this is a great pick.

This would be a really nice golf course if it wasn’t so dry on this area. Some of the holes didn’t even have grass in the fairways. The wind does pick up in the afternoon coming off of the ocean. The price is really reasonable, but the drive for either Hilo or Kona can be long, but scenic. Although, only two stars, this is a fun little course.
