We come to this steakhouse often and absolutely love it! The bone-in ribeye is amazing! The wagyu is also spectacular! Service is always great.

Really Royce? I was looking forward to having dinner at the Royce but of course my expectations were too high. Our waiter’s service was the only thing on point. We started with the seared tuna– correct me if I’m wrong but the definition of seared tuna is quickly heating the surface of the tuna at a very high temperature of heat so that only the surface is semi cooked– keeping natural juices and flavor inside of the tuna. Next, we all know tuna is red in color– why was the seared tuna brown in color and dry? The plating presentation was the only reason I considered trying it out– fool me once shame on u, fool me twice shame on me. The Mashed Potatoes with horseradish was different– the horseradish gave it a nice kick but I wish the texture of the mash potatoes wasn’t so liquid like. The Mac n Cheese– hold the cotto ham-glad we did-nothing special. The Asparagus was asparagus– with a blood orange sauce — too sweet. The truffle spinach was good– then again doesn’t everything with truffle taste good? Finally the cedar bone in rib eye– dry and no flavor– nothing more to say. Starting to wonder how these higher end restaurants survive?

A perfect dining experience for special occasions! Came here to celebrate our anniversary and early Mother’s Day. Their customer service was amazing all around. The managers and waiters would come by often to check up on us. They made sure we were taken care of. We ordered the 32 oz Brandt Côte De Bueuf to share which was more than enough for two. We even had plenty of leftovers. For sides we ordered the truffle spinach and potatoes au gratin. Both were good sides to compliment our steak. The ambiance was beautiful and classy. We got window seating with an amazing view. They also wrote a personalized card and gave us a complimentary dessert to celebrate our occasion. The Langham has a garden in the center and surrounding the hotel. It is absolutely gorgeous. Great to site see before or after your dining experience. It’s a bit on the pricer side so would highly recommend for special occasions.

Wow. Dining at the royce(no capital letters, mind you) was probably one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had. The environment and ambiance just worked. With a dinner reservation at 8pm on a Friday, I was expecting to be seated with near or next to groups of people finishing up their dinners and proceeding into their tipsy portion of the night — AKA wine & gossip. Two tables and across a walkway to the left of me were the rich housewives of Taipei, Taiwan, gossiping away(hi Mom). Behind me were the suburban white-collar Tesla driving type folks(hi Boss) enjoying their night. I fully expected to be distracted from my dinner due to the amount of people and proximity but surprisingly I hardly noticed them. It must have been the beautiful girl seated in front of me. Nahh, it was that delicious ribeye and garlic fries sitting right in front of me that had my attention.(Hi babe. Calm down I’ll buy you ice cream or something later.) It was pretty cool that the had a sofa-style seating with pillows and royal lounge chairs on the opposite side of the table. Real comfy dining experience, for sure. The girlfriend ordered a filet mignon, butterflied, medium cook with the chimichurri sauce. That came out perfect. I ordered the bone-in ribeye, medium cook with the bordelaise sauce. That came out perfect. Quite honestly, the steaks didn’t need the sauce but it was nice to have to change up the flavor profiles. We also got the broccolini side and garlic fries. The broccolini side had fried chopped garlic and whole grilled garlic cloves thrown in. Honestly, I could’ve just eaten that and called it a night. Same goes with the fries. Best. Fries. I. Have. Ever. Eaten… at a sit-down restaurant(hi In-N-Out I still love you). The service was great and attentive. They even let my girlfriend keep the pink pen with the floral design that the hotel provides(ooh ahh)! We came to celebrate my girlfriend finishing her Master’s Degree, and they brought out a little crème brulee dish with the typical«Congralutations!» written in chocolate on the plate. Cliché, but damn that crème brulee was delicious. I’d come back here to celebrate anything just so I can justify eating such good food again.

Oh my such an excellent place to dine. Step out here! Wonderful food, service and surroundings. You are treated with upmost care at The Royce. They have a separate menu for Vegetarians in addition to Vegetarian items on there main menu. Everything seemed to be great here. It’s an upscale place for the most part. I suggest reservations as they are busy . The wine list is extensive too. This is a wonderful place for special occasions. Every once in awhile we all have one of those. Great deserts as well. A definite 5 stars!

I’m glad my sweetie is the type of woman who knows what she wants. Her personality fits well with my daily practice of personal energy conservation. SWEETIE: «Can you buy me a Saint Laurent bag for my birthday?» ME: «Sure…what’s Saint Laurent?» [TRANSLATION: I’m trying to conserve energy… can I just give you the cash and you go get it?] SWEETIE: «I’ll go buy it myself cause I know which model I want… yay, thank you!!!» ME: «Which restaurant do you wanna go to for your birthday?» [TRANSLATION: I’m trying to conserve brain energy… please just tell me.] Her eyes lit up, and without hesitation: «ROYCE!!!» As I devoured my steak at Royce, I told birthday girl, «This ribeye is awesome… I’m so glad you picked this restaurant!» [TRANSLATION: I know it’s really YOUR birthday, but this juicy delicious ribeye was a very nice present for me.] I was here years ago… before Royce was transformed into a steakhouse. Back then, the food was phenomenal, but the atmosphere was fogey and too aristocratic: formal tasting menus, older crowd, live music consisting of harp. Reflecting on this restaurant’s metamorphosis, I’d say it’s nothing like stodgy Buick trying to rebrand itself. This is more like how Rolls Royce shifted, muscled up, and built the twin-turbo 624-horsepower Wraith that could smoke a Porsche 911 Carrera.

I’m quite sad to be giving this restaurant a 3 stars(my opinion) but last night, I was not blown away nor satisfied. First, I’ve been to The Langham before so I have an idea of what to expect and the kind of service I’ll receive. I was here last night for a birthday celebration with my dear friends. Our reservation was for 9:30pm. We did think we would be a little late so we called ahead to let them know. The lovely young lady who picked up was kind about it and said she would let the kitchen know. We arrived around 9:33pm(made it!) and we opted to valet because they do validate. I was met by the hostess and she promptly seated us by the windows. And this is where I wasn’t blown away. Our server seemed impatient with us. I understand the kitchen closes at 10 but we arrived within the the 30 minutes, we didn’t sit around and wait till 9:59pm to put in our orders. After looking at the menu quickly, we opted for three appetizers and a main to share. The three appetizers we ordered were the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, Mac & Cheese and Potatoes Au Gratin. All quite delicious but of course filling. For the main we ordered from the To Share and it was the Brandt Côte de Boeuf, medium rare. I did enjoy the food, my friends were more so so on it. I think for us, because our waiter was so subpar(the other waitstaff who cleared our table was great) the overall feeling of the restaurant kind of went down. Since we were celebrating a birthday, I was upset that my friend did not have the best experience. I always love trying new places, and yes I’m glad we got to try but I don’t think I’ll be back again anytime soon. Tips– Validate, the valet becomes $ 5! Friends always make up for a so so night!

Fancy for grungy me who got off work and pranced down here in my grubbies. Actually, I expected them to give me the ol’ boot. But, from the valet, to the people at the door and hostess and waiters everything turned out well. Soon as you pull in and look at the driveway and astounding décor outside and inside, you can feel the money falling out of your wallet. Of course, I get sat right down at the first table where people enter. Perhaps that was an indication to show people on how not to dress when dining out on the town. But I didn’t care and I wanted to have a great time enjoying a nice ribeye bone in. For starters they bring out very soft, moist cheese ball rolls and a nice bread with olives. Well the knife couldn’t cut it, so I used the steak knife. Bread didn’t budge. So I guess it’s animal style and I just tore the bread apart with my bare hands. Indignant I might say. To bad, I just swooped that bread up with lots of butter. Oooh geeeze, people are looking. Ooooh my, I forgot my lap bib, I mean the catch towel across my pants to catch the food. I smile at all the people looking and place it on my lap. Wine list looked appealing, but shall I dare go for a cup of coffee? Why not! Monsieur Waiter, may I dare ask for a cup of coffee. Yes, but they must make a fresh pot. Nice and strong and a bit on the warm side and in a small heavy little pot. Ribeye bone in steak medium rare had a smooth texture with immensely tantalising flavor and succulent to each bite. Make sure and dip your steak into the sauce for flavor. Double everything on the baked potato with two pieces of bacon sticking out. But it didn’t seem like it had one layer of anything. While tasty, the potato was missing extra butter and sour cream. Overall, I had a great time and off I go into the sunset

A beautifully decorated and quiet restaurant tucked away in the Langham. Definitely a gem given its east of LA location. Before coming here, I thought I had to go all the way to DTLA to find a nice steakhouse that’s not Mortons, Flemings, Ruth’s Chris, etc. Most of the tables have a couch with pillows on one side– super comfy. I went in the evening, so I wasn’t able to enjoy the beautiful view of the lawn but you’re still able to see the beautifully lit trees and cityscape. The staff are kind and attentive. Our waiter was extremely nice and full of recommendations. We called ahead to make reservations for the evening and they were sure to make note of any allergies. Our waiter made adjustments to our orders per the couple of food allergies in our party that we informed the restaurant of. The noise level is extremely low. Like no noise at all. The restaurant played jazz music in the background. It was perfect for conversation. It was pretty cold inside. Ladies, I recommend bringing a light sweater. Lastly, our already amazing experience was made even better by the restaurant’s assistance with my mom’s birthday celebration. The hostess and our waiter were sure to tell her«Happy Birthday» and there was a card waiting for her at our table. At the end of our meal she was also surprised with the most delicious cinnamon beignets on a plate with«Happy Birthday» written in chocolate.

Exquisite Grand Service by Simon, Hallmark of The Royce: Simon, le sommelier extraordinaire, is the sine qua non, the quintessential element in the haut service provided by the Royce at the Langham Hotel. The times that I have gone to the Royce, Simon has been there to bestow courtesies, thoughtful kindness, exemplary service, vast knowledge of all things potable, and the wonderful ability & willingness to impart his vast knowledge to those guests who would like to be more educated & informed in the vast field of enology. In other words, Simon is a great teacher, and I value his enthusiasm in edifying me to be better in appreciating all wines. For example, when I asked his advice for what would be a good wine pairing for their Wood Grilled Rib Eye, which was medium rare meat was tender, melt-in-your-mouth beefy fattiness w/a nice meaty chaw. White oak added a touch of astringent smokiness & hickory a passing sweetness. Salting was perfect since it emphasized the beefiness, & spicing was subtle allowing the meat flavours to shine through. Different parts of the steak had different textures from soft velvety to a rougher chaw producing different mouthfeel to entertain the palate, Simon brought me a 3 wine flight so that I could pair the rib eye three different ways. 1) BV Reserve Tapestry 2011 Beaulieu Vineyard, Napa: «The low-yields of an exceptional cool vintage gave our 2011 Reserve Tapestry its refined elegance, while five Bordeaux-heritage varietals contributed layer-upon-layer of flavor complexity. This is a wine that shows the artistry of the winemaker. Jeffrey chose Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for the wine’s core of briary blackberry and cassis expression and its firm tannin structure. He then added Merlot for plush mid-palate texture and a hint of cherry. Petit Verdot and Malbec complete the blend with nuances of ripe plum, rose, forest loam and graphite.» 2) Camins del Priorat 2013 Alvaro Palacio, Catalunya, Espanya: «Deep and bright on the nose, this Priorat blend is earthy and ripe. Jammy and full on the palate, this wine is muscular but balanced, showing deep black fruit and toasty oak flavors. A dark finish suggests black coffee and uncomplicated berry tones.» 3) Ridge, Lytton Springs 2013 Sonoma, California: «Nose of ripe blackberry, pepper, licorice and a hint of vanilla. Concentrated plum and black cherry fruit on the palate with supple tannins, minerality and balanced acidity. Long, layered finish with notes of ripe fig and dried herbs. Blend: 74% Zinfandel, 16% Petite Sirah, 8% Carignane, 2% Mataro» This thoughtful presentation was all about comparing & contrasting… a method which is a hall mark of all great educators. Also many thanks to S. Southerlin for also taking care of us. Later I asked for a photo op with Simon who found the appropriate location for the shoot in one of their dimly lit wine rooms whose dark paneled wooden walls were filled with racks of high end tres haut wines. For the prop, we both held a bottle of Château Petrus Pomerol, Bordeaux, France which he casually said was $ 2,500. So much for my inclusion into the ranks of high end wine tastings. It was another wonderful Sunday afternoon at the Royce under the aegis of Meister Sommelier Simon who always seems to go beyond expectations. 5 Unilocal stars for going beyond the call of duty.

I can’t elaborate more than what other reviewers have stated re the quality of the food, service and ambiance — but I will say this — I can’t go back to eating sub par steak at Black Angus or any other place that specializes in steak ever again. Our meal with tip came out to about $ 50 per person. I think it’s wise to go the extra mile for the quality of the steak(impeccable and juicy, seasoned just right) and the service. Our waiter checked in on us as we waited an hour for the rest of our party who was stuck in traffic. No pressure to order anything and said we had the table for the rest of the night. Very classy! And very memorable! And so worth it!

The 48 oz. tomahawk steak– very tender and juicy. I still have that salivating texture from a few days ago when I ate there. I can taste and remember the smoky crust of the steak. Some cuts had a little fat but they did a very good job of slicing big and small bite size pieces. This steak I shared with one other person. It was big and fulfilling that I took it as leftovers for the next day. I am also guessing the steak is baked because it is so moist. The steak is comparable to BOA steakhouse. Au gratin potatoes– buttery and cheesy, was a good carb on the side instead of rice. I shared this with one other person. Spinach– it was sautéed with oil and something sweet. It was good but they should have put less oil. Overall I’m fine with it. I shared this with one other person. I was satisfied with the food. The service and the décor inside and around the hotel was clean. The staff was quick with cleaning our table up to serve the steak and removing it to put new plates for dessert. I will likely be returning since its close to home than Beverly Hills.

Five star restaurant nested on the first floor of the Langham Hotel. Impeccable décor, ambiance, food, and service. We’ve been here for just drinks in their champagne room(yes they have one and no it’s not what you’re thinking) and for their full 4-course dinner, and it’s top-notch every time. The fact that it’s at the Langham makes it that much more special. Also five stars for Simone, the sommelier. You can never go wrong with his thoughtful recommendations. Simone was even nice enough to introduce us to the head chef who cooked a fantastic meal for us. Can’t say enough good things about The Royce! Definitely come check it out when you’re in Pasadena but this place is also worth the detour if you’re looking for a great overall dining experience.

All dishes and drinks are excellent! I highly recommend the heirloom tomatoes, kale salad, seared yellowfin tuna, Dungeness crab cake, oysters, and yellowfin tuna tartare from the appetizer menu. All are small bites but excellent. The sauce with oysters makes it unique — has yet to have a sauce like that with oysters. Can’t go wrong with the salmon or stripped bass! Speciality drinks are excellent too– the Langham sour is a must!

Charles, our waiter, was kind, knowledgeable, friendly, and warm. Service makes all the difference. Thanks Charles!

Two years ago today, slave girl decided to risk herself being murdered by a stranger and came out to meet me for the first time. To honor her bravery, I decided to make a reservation at the royce. The Royce is located inside the Langham, while they offer valet parking at $ 5 per restaurant validation, you can also park outside of the hotel by the street for free and take a 5 min hike to get to the front door. I personally like the walk because the place is beautiful. Matter of fact, walk around the hotel if you have extra time to see the fountain and the view from the hill, totally worth it. The restaurant itself is decorated beautifully with comfortable seating. The service was excellent and attentive. Every single one of them who stopped by the table was warm and pleasant. You can bring your own wine too with $ 25 corkage fee, which was what we did. We ordered steak tartare, cote de boeuf with sides of twice baked potato and broccolini. For dessert we got bread pudding with mushroom icecream and a free beignet. Everything we ordered were good, but most enjoyable was the dessert(especially the icecream, mind blown), the cheese bread, broccolini, and steak tartare. The cote de boeuf at medium rare was on the chewy side. I don’t think slave girl liked it as much, but I actually really like the texture. The more I chew, the more flavor was squeezed out in between my teeth. What I really don’t get was the sauce that came with the steak. While the sauce was good(most favorite was horseradish), it was completely unnecessary to put them on your meat. It’s kind of like spread avocado mayo on bluefin toro, err, just the thought of that made me shiver. You get the point. Overall experience was fantastic except one minor detail. I noticed all other tables had bread basket but we never got ours. Next thing you know we got the steak tartare on the table and still no bread. I had to ask for it. Really, I shouldn’t need to do that. Cheese bread was godly though. Definitely return for sure.

Recently went to the Royce again for a double date with another couple. The ambiance was nice, as expected from a hotel restaurant in the old Ritz Carlton(now the Langham Huntington). The food was just okay compared with other steakhouses in the area. Notably, all our steaks were very specifically requested to be a certain temperature, but when they came out, they were all too raw. When we asked about the meat, they were immediately whisked away, only to return too overly cooked. My wife got the filet(butterflied) and the three other steak orders were all rib eyes. Such a shame. We also order extensive drinks, which were all around $ 15-$ 19 per cocktail. Cocktails specialties weren’t memorable other than the fact they were all very small in size. The wines by the glass we ordered were in the $ 20-$ 25 per glass range, and they were just okay. Our server was also very stingy about allowing the girls to try the wine before committing to a specific one, so the girls ordered a few glasses that weren’t pleasant to their palates. We also ordered two orders of foie gras, which were something like $ 30-$ 35 each. Again, they were just okay when compared with other restaurants in the area. Not that I generally care too much about price when dining at nice restaurants, but the cost for this meal struck me as being particularly pricey when compared to the quality we received. Notably, we ordered mushrooms(among other side dishes) and requested truffle shavings to be added to complement the dish, and the few shavings of truffle alone came out to an additional $ 30 add-on to the $ 11 or $ 14 side dish. Definitely not worth the cost. I ultimately picked up the tab at the end of the night and it was almost $ 600 for a party of 4. When we asked the other couple their opinion of the meal, their response was«we’ve had better», especially because the steaks were poorly prepared. My wife and I had previously visited this restaurant 2 years ago for the chef’s tasting menu, and it was just okay also during that visit. Apparently, they now have a separate area just for the tasting menu, so patrons can’t order it from the regular seating area. If you’re looking for the tasting menu while visiting the Royce make sure to book that specifically. Overall, I wouldn’t go back because there are better options for food and drink in and around the area.

Incredible !!! Superb !!! Unbelievable quality of food. The filets and ribeye steak topped the list of all the steakhouses across the country. I can’t even begin to comment about the impeccable service. We’re going back to do the tasting menu. The server passed on our message to the chef, Perry, who took it upon himself to come out and greet us. Not only is he crazy talented but a super gentleman as well. Almost forgot to mention the beautiful setting and ambiance. Not your typical dark, gloomy steakhouse. Bright and inviting. Cannot go wrong.

Pleasantly surprised with this Restaurant. I knew nothing about it and thanks to Unilocal found this amazing steakhouse. We came here for our anniversary. The staff was on point, table was ready with our names on a card, and the service is unmatched. We ordered the Brant Cote De Boeuf which was presented very nicely before it was taken back for cutting. It is more than enough food for two with a couple sides. The seasoning on the beef brought out its flavor. We ordered it Medium Rare. The layout of the restaurant was not cluttered at all. The chairs were very comfortable. It was late, but next time we will try to go earlier to have outside views or even sit outdoors. This is now one of my favorite Steakhouses in Southern Cali.

Super fance. Arriving at the Langham, you feel like you’re about to be spoiled and pampered. The lobby smelled so good. Like, fresh roses. Staff were all super polite and courteous. I was there for a work celebration so we had a set menu. I chose the Caesar salad and filet for my first 2 courses. The Caesar was excellent. White anchovies were fresh and tender, the Romaine crisp and lightly dressed. I am a huge fan of Caesar salads, so to have one that good was a treat. Filet was cooked medium rare, as requested. I wasn’t keen on the sauce they provided — was a bit too tangy and reminiscent of A1. The sides — mushrooms, smoked mashed potatoes and green beans — were decent. I was too full by the time our cinnamon sugar dusted beignets arrived, but I did 1-up my stomach and ate an entire beignet. Our server brought a tiny snowball of vanilla ice cream for the ladies of the group because I mentioned that beignets would be so good with ice cream. We also checked out the Tap Room which is a lovely view. Very warm and cozy place that’d be perfect for a fancy date night cap. I am definitely interested in returning for dinner at the Royce.

awesome experience and amazing food! took mama for dinner for our babymoon while staying at the Langham. ordered the Porterhouse for 2 at 32oz. that is a perfect size to share. mama is not a big fan of «red» meat so i asked for it medium hoping the Filet side would be cooked enough to her liking. came out still a little too under for her. when i asked the server to see if they can get our steak under the broiler for a couple more minutes, she didn’t hesitate to signal the runner over for our request. not only did they come johnny on the spot, but, they asked if we wanted the whole steak well or just the Filet. what! of course, i didn’t want to sacrifice my Strip to the fire gods any more, so they just cut off mama’s portion table side onto her plate and whisked that away. 5minutes and a couple sips of my Old Fashion later and mama’s perfectly cooked(to her liking at least) steak returned. our steaks were soooooo F@$%ing goooooood… this was mama’s first venture with the Porterhouse and she fell in love with her new choice of cut. even though her Filet was pretty much«charred» to me, it was still soft, tender and buttery. obviously, my Strip was awesome. seasoned wonderfully and just hinted of butter. we had the broccoli and mushrooms for our sides and complimented the steaks amazingly. like i mentioned, service was spot on. the steaks were of high caliber. the drinks were top notch. and obviously, the price was reflective of all this. if you can drop a pretty penny on a great dinner, i highly recommend The Royce.

I came here for dinner today. Overall, it was a decent meal and restaurant, but pricey. Located in the Langham hotel in Pasadena, the restaurant has a sophisticated and romantic atmosphere. I don’t eat fancy meals often, so it was a nice change of pace and environment. We ordered the Australian skirt steak, rib eye, lobster, Mac and cheese, potatoes gratin, and kale salad to split among the four of us. My favorite was probably the skirt steak. The meat was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. I didn’t think much of the ribeye though, even though it was twice the price. I don’t know why, everything just tasted really salty. Even my bf, who prefers to season his food heavily, thought it was too much. Out of all the sides, I think we also agreed that the Mac and cheese was the best(my friend, who hates cheese, said it was he best Mac and cheese he’s ever had). Everything else was just way too salty. The lobster was also a little overcooked. It also took forever for the waiter to refill our water cups… Considering the food was so salty, I didn’t even want to eat anymore at one point during the dinner. My favorite part of the meal was the desert. We ordered the peach tart, bread pudding, and chocolate cake. All of them were good but really sweet and heavy. For $ 25 for three, the price is actually not too bad! We even thought they were better than the famous«extraordinary desserts» in San Diego, where we ate this past weekend. Anyways, we were lucky we had a coupon for this meal and the bill turned out to be $ 170 or so after the 30% discount. Everyone seemed to enjoy the meal, but unfortunately due to the salt, I thought it was just ok. I probably wouldn’t come here again unless my friends decide to come back and we have the discount, but if I do, I’d go for the skirt steak and desserts :)

Brunch here is amazing. For $ 58 you get unlimited drinks like mimosas, juices etc. and a buffet dessert bar. They offer a tasty sampler to start. You pick one entrée. A delicious truffle hash brown and market vegetables comes with the entrée. We had asparagus with our entrée. The jidore chicken was super dry. The cesar salad was tasty. Love the atmosphere. Great place for brunch with friends. The views from the windows are awesome. Staff is excellent. They are constantly coming to refill the mimosas and tea. Super friendly and professional. Parking is valet only. The line gets pretty backed up so be prepared to wait to come in to valet and another long wait when picking up your vehicle.

The Royce was the perfect place to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. My very romantic husband planned the dinner well in advance, and made sure the restaurant knew why we were there. Because of this, a customized card sat at our table when we arrived. The food was superb and those who enjoy cedar-plank grilled food would definitely be satisfied. We shared a bison steak cooked medium-rare since that lean protein can be dry if overdone, and sides of a broccolini and broccoli blend, and summer corn which complemented each other well. The drinks were extremely potent but this is not a complaint. The cocktail menu was especially impressive. Mike ordered a crème brûlée for dessert which as always he whacked with a spoon before diving in, plus we were brought a complimentary plate of beignets for our special day. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was elegant yet modern. While I do not know when I will next be in Pasadena, I would happily return to The Royce and would love to stay at The Langham upon my next visit.

Appearing royal & regal, Langham’s premier restaurant is eponymous w/a former owner, Stephen W. Royce. Surrounding grounds are lush & well manicured where people can congregate near a fountain making pleasant water sounds as you proceed to the Royce. General white-on-white décor has not changed but doesn’t seem as excruciatingly formal & pretentious during the light of day for Sunday brunch. Perhaps the severe contrast of the dark night & the highly reflective white décor during dinner created that illusion. For brunch, the room was luminous, light, bright, airy. Started off w/sweet brown cake-like bread w/a tripartite white dish containing vanilla flavoured crème anglaise, stiffly whipped savory herbed cream cheese, & blackberry, raspberry, blueberry as an accent. Shot glass of viscous banana, strawberry, yoghurt smoothie came along. Coffee as a bitter contrast helped down this sugary, starchy prelude. This must be to appease people who expect a heartier American breakfast approach. The spirits cart pushed by Simon, a most knowledgeable & personable sommelier, came to take our drink order which is part of the price of the brunch. There was a vase of fresh bright green Verveine/lemon verbena, the scent of which reminded me of the hills facing the blue Mediterranean in Provence. Also various carafes of fruit juices, vodka, bottles of cremant/sparkling wine. Their signature spicy Bloody Mary was perfect in its various Umami from the tomato juice, aromatic horse radish, spices, chile & possibly a broth base. Vodka was only a presence, & a sprig of Verveine gave the nose a citrus, green musky summer scent. Appetizer plate: 1) Ahi Tuna Tartare w/Yuzu/Japanese citrus dressing. Texture was a bit mushy & fishy possibly due to its warm temperature. Due to the gaminess, an added squeeze of lemon would have enlivened the flavours. 2) Steak Tartare was finely ground. Seasonings were possibly Worchester sauce, black pepper, green onions to add to the beefiness, but the warm temperature of the meat made the texture seem inordinately mushy. 3) Crab cake was covered in Panko/Japanese breadcrumbs & pan fried, but to make it crunchy, it was over fried & dried killing the delicate crab flavor. Dab of tartar sauce & microgreens contrasted to the golden brown. 4) Seafood salad was bits of lobster, diced ripe sweet mango, chopped green onions in a delicate olive oil vinegar dressing & a bit bland without refreshing coolness. 5) Heirloom tomato was roasted & placed by a goat cheese crostini cube, then doused w/agrodolce/sweet sour Aceto Balsamico/Italian wine vinegar. This was the best of the appetizers. 1−5a) Gruet Blanc de Noirs Pinot Noir, a New Mexico Cremant, was not particularly pinkish. Slightly astringent, acidic, lightly sweet, touch of vanilla w/mostly a clean nose of citrus. Clean palate cleansing properties was a good pairing to the appetizers. 6) The Wood Grilled Ribeye was glorious making up for the so so appetizers. Medium rare meat was tender, melt-in-your-mouth beefy fattiness w/a nice meaty chaw. White oak added a touch of astringent smokiness & hickory a passing sweetness. Salting was perfect since it emphasized the beefiness, & spicing was subtle allowing the meat flavours to shine through. Different parts of the steak had different textures from soft velvety to a rougher chaw producing different mouthfeel to entertain the palate. 6a) Potato Pie was over fried making the outer layer tough & dry. Condiment was Crème fraiche infused w/white truffle oil & chives. Broccoli seemed wood grilled & was over grilled to the point it tasted burnt. 7) Notable Buffet desserts were the Bombe au Chocolat having soft semi sweet chocolate ganache dome made shiny w/apricot en gelee over a sponge cake base. Perfectly baked Croissant au Chocolat is a buttery millefeuille flakey pastry hiding inside is a plug of stiff bitter sweet chocolate. Thin chocolate wafers laminated w/colorful geometric & floral designs on some desserts added whimsy. What takes Royce to the high point is its service by a very attentive staff. Charles, our young waiter, was at the top of his game. He is passionate & extremely sincere about giving it his best to make sure our stay at the Royce was top notch. Simon, the Sommelier, took time to converse & teach me a bit more about wine & took pride in imparting his enological expertise to an interested guest. When I mentioned that the cocktail olive stuffed w/Roquefort was an amazing pairing w/the Bloody Mary, he came by to give me another one without my asking. Dylan, the assistant manager, came by to welcome us & to let him know if we needed anything. I know of only two other restaurants that give such high level of sincere service, Patina & Gary Danko. Kudos to the staff at the Royce. 4++ Unilocal stars for a memorable brunch leaving us all feeling like very valued customers. Bravo, Bravissimo!

Made reservations to celebrate my brother in law’s 30th birthday. The service there is truly impeccable and classy. They gave him a birthday card and a free crème brûlée. Parking: we parked on the street(oak knoll) but you can do valet parking and the restaurant will validate so you’ll only end up paying $ 5 vs $ 14. Area: it’s located in the beautiful south Pasadena. Location was not hard to find and its nice to see all the beautiful homes. Restaurant: the décor is beautiful inside(pretty ritzy) but you can dress in jeans and a button up shirt(for men) or dress up. Food: soo amazing! My husband and his brother shared the 32 oz aged steak Cotê de Bouef(which was plenty). His twin ordered the Arizona aged rib eye. They wanted to try all the sauces but they said the horseradish was their favorite. I ordered the wild king salmon. It was the perfect portion and since I was eating for two, I finished the entire thing. My sister in law ordered the halibut in the bouillabaisse sauce and that was very lift and fresh. Sides: we ordered the corn, potato gratin, and spinach with truffle. Perfect balance. Potato gratin is amazing and the corn was not heavy and delicious. For dessert we ordered the beignets to share and luckily we ordered only one order because there was five in an order and it was enough. It was light and sweet! Service: superb! The hostess and the waiter were so sweet and have great recommendations. This is one of our favorite steakhouses.

You come to the Langham for a luxurious experience. You come to the Royce for a damned fine steak. It’s got old school flair, amazing food, an extensive wine list and whisky cart. The menu will not disappoint you. Food: 5⁄5 Stars *Bread basket — the olive bread and the golden puffs of jalapeño-cheesy goodness. *Warm Kale Salad w/Bacon. Damn. *Brandt Farm 8oz Filet. I added Foie Gras on top. You will too *Bread Pudding. Service: 3⁄5 Stars *If your car isn’t nice, you WILL be directed to the«ugly car lot» as confirmed by my valet. Blue ticket is the front, Green ticket is the, well, you’ll know. *Poor use of staffing… Watching my waitress expertly balance most of the tables in the room was quite a feat; but made it impossible to get ANYTHING in a timely manner. Overall: 4⁄5 Stars If you’ve got money and can prove it, you will probably have a flawless experience. My meal was absolutely astounding, and I will return here as often as possible for it. The staff is courteous and friendly, as attentive as they are directed to be; I only wish there was better allocation of that amazing staff. I had 4 different people waiting my table at any one time to deliver dishes and fill glasses; but our dedicated waitress was spread so thin that we only saw her 3 times and never even learned her name. Kristofer’s Tip of the Day: Foie Gras. Always. Oh, and drive a nice car to get the full experience.
