When you first look at it… it really doesn’t fit in with the surroundings… this is a small diner that on the outside looks like Alice in Wonderland kind of thing(with the plants all over it and making it look all nice) and then you go inside and it’s like a old diner you see in old towns in the movies. SERVICE: Nice. When I came in the guy was helpful and took my order. The Asian owner was alright, she didn’t seem to go out of her way to make people feel welcomed. Could be because she’s been owning this business for a long time. But the cook was nice. Kept smiling at me in a weird way… oh well! I got my food! FOOD: Veggie Cheese burger: $ 3.25 — small but eh got the job done in my stomach Fries — $ 1.50 — alright. Nothing special. This place is really just a hole in a wall for fast cheap food. It’s not like Pie N Burger(mmmm). It’s a mom and pop shop. Really small. NOTES: Cash Only Parking next door — $ 1.50/hour street parking

This pace is simply adorable! First off the place is a tiny little hut covered with greenery which consist of a counter and a few stools. Very mom and pop. You can watch the chef prepare the food which is cool. The prices cant be beat. I was really considering going to Mickey D’s cus i wanted a cheap burger, but i am so glad i came here. They didnt have fries on the menu so i just got a bag of fries and a bottles water. That combined with my cheeseburger came out to about 4bucks. But hurry and visit this place they are going out of business the end of this year. :(Its so delish and they give to-go items in a brown ppr bag! HOWADORABLE!

Though this place is less than a minute’s walk away from where I live, it took me some time to gather the courage to step inside. Earlier today, I visited a female doctor to get a physical check-up. At one point, she indicated in a very no-pressure-because-lesser-men-wouldn’t-be-comfort able-with-this kind of tone that she could check my testicles for whatever could be wrong with them. I dropped my pants immediately to show her who’s boss. Afterwards, with my freshly-acquired prescription for an asthma inhaler, I picked up said inhaler from Target. I haven’t had an inhaler since I was 11, and now I don’t need to worry about succumbing to something as stupid as lungs while I’m shooting for a 6-minute mile. Clearly, I was on a roll for the day. Today, of all days, would be the day that I challenge The White Hut. You see, the name terrifies me. It signifies an exclusiveness from which I am forever excluded based on me not being white. «Not today», I told myself. I’ve got an asthma inhaler and I dropped my pants on a dime for a complete stranger to poke my nuts. Nothing was going to stop me. I boldly stepped inside and out of the sun and found that… wait… what? Dude, you’re not white. You’re a random Asian lady who talks really white. What’s going on here? As it turns out, these people aren’t white, they’re cold-but-not-rude Asians. And the«hut» isn’t white either. I have absolutely no clue why it’s called what it’s called. But then again, The Hat has nothing to do with hats either. Wait, I’m going off-track again. Let’s get to the point, okay? Alright, here goes: what a crappy little burger! I had a double cheese with everything. Three dollars and fifty cents, no tax, right around what you’d expect to pay. The meat patties were tiny. The«spread», if it can be called that, tasted nothing like the Italian dressing I’m guessing it was trying to mimic; instead, it tasted like months-old-and-really-sou r I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter — and not even the spread kind, but more like the weird stuff that comes in a pump-spray bottle. Also, I’m pretty sure«double cheeseburger» means double meat AND double cheese. Here, you get ONE dinky little half-slice of cheese, wedged between the two patties, much like the slices you get in Filet O Fishes these days. I almost want to order a regular cheeseburger to see if they give me like one quarter of a slice… or maybe none at all. Simply adding one extra beef patty doesn’t make it a double cheeseburger! I let a stranger cup my testicles in a non-sexual manner, I deserve my cheese! Shortfalls aside, would I come back in a jam? I guess I would, in hopes of a better choice, but if a place can’t do a basic burger right, I’ve low hopes of them doing much better with other items. I just hope I’m not in a burger-requiring jam any time soon.

Good joint. Get the double cheeseburger, they are tiny. Good fries. Cheap!

.., don’t let the size of this place fool you. Mom & Pop from head to toe, I used to grab food here w/my fellow chefs while attending class @ Le Cordon Bleu located next door in 10′. Prices range from $ 4& up, made to order, cash only. I’ve had their donuts, burgers, hot dogs, & pastrami here. Not bad, not bad at all. Usually run by a sometimes fiesty woman, she means well, & she isn’t intimidated by any future chef coming into her kitchen. Great spot if you want to avoid the hustle & bussel from the outside world.

Call it hole-in-the– wall! Mom and Pop joint! My favorite Burger joint! I Love this place! I went to school next to the building CSCA back in 03′ when I discovered this place. Til then, when I graduated back in 04′ they still remember me til now! Yes, I was here a lot at those time I went to cooking school! Reasonable price and good flavor! I always ordered the Cheeseburger with bacon & avocado, with some fries and pink Lemonade! The Lemonade is BOMB. com! Nicest people ever! The cook is super nice! I love their burger better than the one at my café at school! Don’t expect for anything fancy, this place deserve a five star for it’s simplicity natural flavor!

The White Hut is awesome for its simplicity. It’s like stuff your friend’s mom would make you for lunch when you were in 3rd grade. Nothing over $ 4! That’s lunch money!

If you blink while driving down Madison Avenue you will miss this place! After reading the reviews on Unilocal I had to try this place out, and I’m so glad I did. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries, and words like«classic» and«original» come to mind. This is what a burger & fries should taste like: lightly seasoned meat, a slight zing of mustard, and the textures of the toasted bun, lettuce, tomato, and onions. We’ve been BigMac-ed and Whopper-ed to death and it seems like we’ve forgotten why we love the original burger. The White Hut is the only burger counter I can think of in existence. The food is prepared 4 feet away from you, there is limited seating, and friendly service. They have a wide selection of sodas in a can. About 10 people from the Cordon Bleu came while I was there, and if people from a culinary school eat there, then you should, too.

Space is very limited and it is cash only but the food is delicious. It is funny that this place is so popular with the cooking students though they would never be taught to cook this way. Their teachers would probably frown on this wonderful gourmet food.

Simple, cheap food that hits the spot. I had read about this place twice in the past week, and decided to try it for lunch today. I ordered my hamburger to go, but while I was waiting wished that I had time to eat at the counter. The owner and cook were friendly, and there seemed to be a number of regulars at the counter or outside at the tables. I actually liked the smaller hamburger size, and it was just the right amount of food for me at lunch. And for $ 2.50 it can’t be beat! I will be back to try other items on their menu.

I lunched at the counter and ordered a burger(tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, sauce, and mustard) and fries(very crisp) for $ 4. Granted, the burger was smaller than what you would get at a swankier place and was slightly smaller than its In N’ Out counterpart, though the amount was fine for me(the fact that you can keep eating doesn’t mean you should!). It hearkens back to the good old days when burgers weren’t gargantuan monstrosities of carbs and meat. They don’t have a soda fountain, and they stick to cans of pop. Also, although the burger came in a little basket, the fries were served in a styrofoam-like box — not very green! This might have been a 3.5-star review rounded downwards, but the proprietors, a very friendly, elderly Asian couple who’ve been there for over 30 years, were very nice. Their friendliness and persistence in manning the counter gave the place a comfortable feel. I hope they don’t meet the fate of other restaurants in the vicinity:

Another local place to my work, I grabbed a breakfast sandwich here the other morning and it wasn’t anything special but this place looks to have some history. I am sure as I go back again and again I will get to know the owner, sorta your local greasy hamburger stand that hasn’t been changed in 20 years including cleaned. $ 3 for an egg and bacon in sourdough is not expensive it is however good to hold you over from a grumbling stomach while waiting for lunch. I will likely come try the burger soon.

Cheap, & fast. Cash only. The food was alright but I loved the joint… It is a total mom and pop shop and the place takes you back in time. Don’t expect the food out of this world but it is charming and I’m glad it is still around.

When Morgan C suggested The White Hut for lunch, I was skeptical. I’ve never seen this place even though I was familiar with the area, and the Unilocal reviews are mixed. Shrug, I gave it a shot and we walked down Colorado. Wow, am I glad we went! The White Hut is a small, off-the-strip box of a building located under trees in the parking lot of a shoe repair shop. Don’t be scared. Embrace. We walked in and, as it is a mom-and-pop shop, the Mom greeted us and took our order while relaying our order to the Pop. They were so cute and friendly. They do not have a tip jar out, so I left my tip on the counter. I ordered a hamburger($ 2.50!), fries, and a soda. My total was $ 4.75! The food was made to order and it only took a minute or two. The portions are smaller than what you are used to seeing at McDs, but they are reminiscent of 1960s portions. You know, your normal 2,000 calorie portions. The portion was perfect for me, and I didn’t even finish my fries. The hamburger was perfectly cooked and tender! The meat quality is questionable — I got some cartilage or gristle in a bite or two — but hey, just more flavor and texture, right? The White Hut also serves donuts, and my group and I concluded that they fry their french fries in the same oil as they make donuts because our fries tasted like donuts. Despite the donut taste/smell, I liked their fries because they were crispy and freshly made to order. If you order a soda, they give you a whole bottle or can. For a lunch under $ 5 and within walking distance, The White Hut is one of my first choices! I will definitely come here again and again, and I hope this mom-and-pop place stays open for a long time!

Food is cheap! Quality is fine. Quantity is small. But really what can you expect from a small burger shack. I like the fact that they are fast and around $ 5 for a complete meal. Also there is something about eating is a little hole in the wall that is very comforting. Oh and this is a Mom & Pop place so that’s a big plus. And remember CASHONLY!

Nearly everything about this hut is perfect. Lunch = Appetizer — rainbow sprinkle doughnut Entrée — 2 cheeseburgers with everything. beverage — Dr. Pepper, cup of ice. This works every time.

So, like many others, I used to go to The White Hut all the time hen I worked in the area. I have since moved to San Francisco where tiny diner-style deli’s abound, and on a recent vist to Pasadena was faced with the troubling question of «Where can i go for a breakfast sandwich at 11am on a Thursday that is NOT a Starbucks /Mc Donalds /Trashy Fast food?!» The answer was The White Hut! Luckily, I happened to be around the corner at Zona Rosa(which is also my fave non-trash coffee place in Pasadena). I highly reccommend parking in the Vroman’s parking lot, buying a magazine downstairs, and walking(yes, getting off yr ass and moving!) down the street and grabbing coffee at Zona Rosa, and then going around the corner and introducing yourself to the SUPER-nice woman behind the counter at the White Hut!

I didn’t know about this place until I attended the California School of Culinary Arts literally right across the street. Yes, it seems weird for a professionally trained chef to be seen around the likes of The White Hut, but personally in my opinion, it’s small joints like this that help define All-American food. That and I wasn’t the only student who went there. I agree with Mike that the burgers are a little smaller than what we’re used to, but the fact that it’s all cooked right in front of you totally makes up for it. You go there enough(which I did) in a short period of time, the waitress/manager/owner will begin to recognize you and know what you want as soon as you walk in. I mean, this place is in no means gourmet, but how can you beat a hot cooked-to-order cheeseburger, freshly fried french fries and cold soda? I would definitely consider this a «hidden treasure»

I grew up in the Pasadena area but never ate at The White Hut until I moved a few blocks away. Lucky me… This place is great for a quick lunch or breakfast with very, very friendly people working there and awesome food. The portions are smaller than your average burger joint, however, the prices are adjusted accordlingly. Burger, fries, and coke are about $ 7.00−8.00 after tip. Totally worth it as the food is great and they cook it right in front of your face. Being a local, it’s also very convenient for a quick breakfast. I can get my sunny side up eggs, sausage, hash browns, OJ/coffe and be out of there in 10 – 15 minutes if they aren’t too busy. The only thing thing that I don’t like is that The White Hut closes at 3:00pm. There’s been so many occassions where I’m just sitting around my apartment, being a lazy ass and want a good burger in the afternoon/evening. I don’t just want some piece of crap fast food burger, but something good, that’s not going to cost me $ 12.00 like any of the other descent restaurants in the area. I’d probably eat here about twice as much if they were open longer hours and on Saturday too.
