Bess Eaton, In the 90s when I would visit my grandparents in Westerly getting doughnuts from Bess Eaton was a must. My dad would get up extra early to get them and all the cousins would have doughnuts before heading off to Watchaug Pond to waterski/tube/kneeboard. One year Bess Eaton was gone and Tim Hortons moved in. Of course it was not the same. Since they have re-opened I have enjoyed getting the variety of doughnuts they offer and to share a memory from my childhood with my son.

Ohhh the irony. This was a southern New England donut chain with roots in Westerly(kind of holy roller but not down your throat…)…they struggled for years and eventually sold to Tim Horton’s, who basically crashed and burned in RI, MA and CT after they took over. So the rebirth of Bess Eaton’s is more than amusing. the coffee is ok, but the baked goods are far superior than that Marty McGillicuddy crapola known as Dunkin. Try the pistachio muffins. Glad to see the return.

Stopped in quickly for a light breakfast thanks to a recommendation from a gas station around the corner. I ended up getting a egg-white flat-bread with a smoothie. The flat-bread was very light and would have minimal effect on anyone looking for a meal, so nothing to really boast of there, but the smoothie was good. It reminded me of a mom and pop shop version of Dunkin’ Doughnuts with a couple of tables out front and a drive-thru.

Bess Eaton would definitely be my weekend must-go joint to do some work if(and this is a BIG if) – they just had Wi-Fi! Will whoever runs this place please get Wi-Fi in here? Your bagels are a thousand times better than the Bean Counter’s, your ambience is less«bar-like» than Perks and Corks, you are open past friggin THREE o’clock in the friggin afternoon, your employees acknowledge their customers’ existence, and there are always a bunch of bored teenagers leaning on walls and skateboarding outside. Reminds me of home in New Jersey. But no – selfish Bess Eaton refuses to accommodate on the Internet, and I always have to leave. Why??? And to think, we could have been friends :(
