I have been to Mel’s about five times in the last 18 months. It is very cute inside 50s décor with plenty of parking outside. They have lots of flavors of ice cream and gluten free options. My husband likes the big banana splits. If you order gluten free they do put on gloves and get a different scoop for your ice cream. That is a definite plus. So why only 3 stars? Customer service. If you go with friends, you will not get the opportunity to enjoy the ice cream together. Three of us went there and only one person waited on us even though there were 2 staff people and no other customers were present. By the time they were done scooping all the ice creams, 3, my companions had already finished– it’s that slow and it’s not like we had sundaes. Defeats the purpose of going together. This has happened most every time. So we stopped going. And to be honest they are not very friendly. They are not rude or anything like that, but just not really friendly either. If you are gluten sensitive this has been a safe place to eat as they take it seriously.

Came here with friends of ours on the night that the Lions club was holding their fundraiser. The shop was decorated like a 50’s diner, complete with bar stools, vintage pictures and some very cool Coke Cola can toys. I had strawberry cheesecake and cake batter. Delicious! They even had gluten free ice cream and cones. Lots of delicious flavor a to choose from.

Super yummy. Worth the trip if you are in SECT or south county RI. The light sweet favors are best. Definitely try Graham Central Station. Maple walnut was excellent. Mel knows her ice cream and thinks about flavor combinations even downtown to the sprinkles.

So many options if your lactose intolerant she has tuns of shave ice flavors and sorbet! Really great atmosphere too!

Love the design and concept of the place. The staff is pleasant and personable. They remembered us after the first time. We went for my neices bday party and mel was great. Julie was a great assistant too. I do wish the ice cream was a diff brand. This brand is common around here and there are better. A few times it was sticky or too soft also

Awesome 1950’s ice cream shop décor, with a friendly staff. Oh… The ice cream is available in hard and soft varieties, with many flavors as well as a mind boggling variety of sundaes, cones, cups, and soft drinks, including root beer floats. Always a nice mix of ages, and it seems to attract many owners of classic cars.

We just moved to town recently and tried Mel’s for the first time tonight. We found the place to be so charming and as others have said, it felt like you were stepping back into the 50’s as soon as you walked in the door. The décor was fun — red, white, and black checkered theme with vinyl records hanging(remember those!?). My only complaint(if you can call it that) is that the bench seat along the wall is deceivingly low, so much so that it was rather uncomfortable… other seating is available however. On to the ice cream! I had a cake batter waffle cone, the ice cream was rich and creamy and tasted just like yellow cake with lots of chocolate ripples. The others in my party had strawberry and Graham cracker flavors. The strawberry was absolutely delicious with chunks of strawberry laced throughout. The Graham cracker was a fun flavor to try and was true to its name. This place was a fun find and one that we will certainly be returning to again!

Stopped by for an after dinner ice cream. It was like stepping in to a ‘50s style soda fountain. The service was great, they guy behind the counter was friendly. I ordered a small sundae with the Gram Central Station ice cream. The small sundae is actually pretty good size. I probably would have been satisfied with a mini Mel. The Gram Central Station tasted just like graham crackers. After talking to the guy behind the counter he told me they had a s’mores sundae made with the Gram Central Station with marshmallow fluff and fudge, I’ll have to try that next time. The ice cream comes from Bliss Ice Cream in Mass. I’m not familiar with them but the description on the wall stated that they use farm fresh cream, cane sugar and other quality ingredients. Overall the ice cream was very good, I have had slightly better at a place like Buttonwood, but it’s a different environment. This is a fun place, great environment full of nostalgia. I am sure kids would love it. I will definitely come back and plan on bringing my mom, who I think will love the place and I am sure will love a root beer float!

Mel’s is one of the few non-chain ice cream shops around. No matter what they have been voted best ice cream in the Westerly area. My son usually gets cotton candy ice cream with M&Ms and rainbow shots & Mel’s is one of his favorite spots. If you like ice cream then there’s no reason not to like Mel’s. There’s plenty of flavors to choose from & they’re all good. It’s no surprise that they’re always busy. The décor is fashioned after a 1950s diner/ice cream parlor with big booths & a long server bar. Everyone who works at Mel’s is so outgoing & friendly too. Plus they’re open year round unlike the other ice cream spot around the corner!

Whenever I drive by this ice cream joint it’s always booming with customers. So I stopped in recently to get some ice cream and see what all the hubbub was about. They use Bliss Ice Cream from Massachusetts which I thought was pretty good. The flavor«Graham Central Station» kicks butt and takes names. I liked that it actually tastes like graham crackers and is sort of different than all the usual chocolately gooey blend-in flavors. The only thing I didn’t like was that the price difference between the two ice cream sizes, a small and a large, was just several cents. I hate when ice cream parlors do that. They do it so as to force you to get the larger size. Unfortunately us folks who who don’t want a lot of ice cream lose out when we order the overpriced smaller size.

What to say about Mel’s Downtown Creamery… the BEST ice cream/treats around! They offer so many different flavors of ice cream and treats its amazing. We have our favorites… moosetracks, cotton candy, extreme chocolate… just about every time we go to Mel’s, there is something new. She has so many variety of toppings you can add to your ice cream to really make it your own. I had my daughters 9th birthday party there and it was a blast for the kids and fun for me too. All I had to do was show up! The staff did all the work. The kids made their own sundaes, played a game and received goodie bags too! The décor is 50’s with music playing of all the oldies but goodies. The staff is always friendly and greets you with a smile. The shop is neat and clean and they really care about their customers. The owners are constantly thinking of ways to give back to the community and they do an awesome job of it. I was excited to hear that they were going to stay open year round and add soups to the menu. Three kinds which you can get in a cup, bowl or bread bowl… yum yum yummy!!! The next time you are thinking of having a birthday party, a fundraiser or just a good olde fashion night out with the family or friends… Mel’s Downtown Creamery IS the place to go!!!

Note that the Downtown Creamery has new owners, a new name, Mel’s Downtown Creamery and some new offerings. My wife and I stopped by during the new opening and were warmly greated by both Mel and her husband, the new owners. Mel had recognized my wife who had frequented another ice cream place in Cranston, RI, where Mel previously worked. They had a lively conversation about the values and plans that Mel has for her new business. Mel went to local schools and came back to the area to open her first ice cream café. I must say I was impressed with her committment to serving high quality ice cream and yogurt products and to customer service. Both my wife and I love frozen yogurt, so we were very pleased to see that Mel is continuing the store’s link to Bliss ice cream and yogurt products. Bliss is made in nearby Mass. and is consistently excellent, with a wide range of flavors. Mel has added several additional yogurt flavors to the Creamery menu. I had a delicious coffee toffee«small» cup(which would be a medium size in most ice cream shops). It was amazingly creamy, despite being made with low fat(5%) frozen yougurt. My wife had milky way, which was also tasty, and included bits of either milky way candy bar, or a close substitute. My wife also loves the chocolate peanut butter cup yogurt flavor, while I also like the black rasberry chocolate chip yogurt. As health conscious eaters, we like seeing the nutritional info for Bliss prouducts posted in the store. Mel’s also serves pies and other deserts to go with the ice cream and frozen yogurt and will make ice cream cakes as well. We certainly wish Mel and her husband well in their new venture. We will be frequent patrons! Michael
