Very friendly service and very fair prices. This business has been owned and operated by the same family for over 100 years and I greatly admire this. They always have what I need.

Cohen’s is chock-​full of every hardware and home necessity you could imagine! Had I realized they sold those carts that come very much in handy for transporting groceries and laundry to and from my apartment, I would have bought mine there and saved myself the slightly longer walk to 10^th Street Hardware (that is not to say they’re also great)! I needed keys copied on very short notice, so I headed over to Cohen’s and had my keys copied with absolutely no hassle and for super cheap! Not to mention the key worked perfectly! I will definitely be back!

So I find the owners of this place very helpful and enjoyable. However their one employee has twice been very nasty to me. He is usually working the key machine. I asked him «hello could you make me A copy of this key?» His response was him massaging his temples and replying «sorry my psychic abilities aren’t working today. Can you tell me how many copies you want?» In a nasty tone. It’s not professional and I won’t be going there because of him.

This place is great, and for a small brick and mortar shop, has, for the past year, served all the needs that this urban renter could possibly have and been a great ’round the corner go-​to for me. Cohen & Co. is very much an embodiment of Philadelphia’s uniquely vibrant independent business culture. Mitch is a great guy – very helpful, conversational, warm and friendly (as is everybody else there) and genuinely interested in building relationships with his customers, often expressing his appreciation for their loyal patronage and showing interest in them as members of the community.

Mitch is always very helpful and extremely nice and funny. I only go to his store for any hardware needs or problems and he is always willing to help me out on the spot! I usually get any keys I have copied here and they always work perfectly! He is fast with everything and always can make me smile! I will always be a returning customer to Cohens!

I go to Cohen Hardware store 2 – 3 times a month, to pick up stuff for tinkering around the house. Every time I have been there, the customer service is awesome. They are really helpful and super friendly. I love having this place near where I live, so that I can support local businesses.

Extremely customer service oriented. Will really go the extra mile to help you because they care about running a great hardware store. I love that the store is incredibly well organized. I only wish they had a slightly larger selection of products and a few more on the eco-​friendly side of things. Still, I drive from an entirely different neighborhood to go to this place.

Remember those ginsu knife commercials from the 80s? That’s how awesomely sharp my favorite kitchen knife is now, after I dropped it off for sharpening at Cohen & Co.
For the record, this review is only for the knife-​sharpening & the really nice customer service, from who I am going to assume is Mrs. Cohen. I didn’t buy anything here, but looks like typical awesome & often random hardware store offerings that I do so love.
Anyway, can we talk about my favorite kitchen knife? I bought it when I was married, like 10 years ago. It was working just fine (I thought), but I met up with the people at Cohen & Co at that South Street Street Fair a couple months ago & they mentioned they did knife sharpening, so I took their card. I finally dropped off my knife last week, picked it up a few days ago. Why did I not do this sooner?!
And Mrs. Cohen was super nice! We had a long talk about fabric tape measures (they don’t sell them, but she was cool about advising me where to find one) & then we got into a long conversation about measuring oneself for a bra. Whilst in a hardware store. I know. So cool.
Highly recommend. I went in for the knife sharpening, I’ll be back for the friendliness.

All i needed was nails and i got the royal treatment by who i think was the owner. Super friendly and literally helped me decided on the best way to hang garland on my fire place. I left with a gigantic box of nails and a new found love of hardware stores. Damn i love QV !

Oh, they also make keys the old fashioned way — which is good! The guy in the back made me two perfect car key copies, that Lowe’s couldn’t get right after two tries with their automated key machine.

Today was my second time patronizing this fine establishment. I am new to the neighborhood.
Such a breath of fresh air to walk into a biz that really does «walk the walk» when it come to great customer service.

Cohen & Co is just what I want from a «mom and pop» hardware store: necessities, advice, connections, and friendliness. I go here first before heading to Sh*thole Depot or Loews and enjoy their neighborly hospitality. Just keep in mind that they are a general hardware store with a few services (key/​glass cutting) so if you’re looking for custom marble toilets or a maple door, you need to go to a specialty shop or a dreaded chain.
So what puts this store from 3 to 5 stars, everything besides the basic hardware goods. I’ve chatted with the owners every time I go in (unless they’re really busy) and even spoken to their parents on occasion — they were super helpful when I ran to the store through a rainstorm to get crap to fix a leak. They don’t have to, but they always ask how everything’s going with me. I actually live one neighborhood from the Cohens and I feel like I’m their next door neighbor whenever I head in, and you know what, I dig it.
The last piece I will give them props for is they definitely know good contractors and have a relationship with many of them in the area. The Cohens have given me quality advice and recommendations on numerous occassions. You’re not going to get that from Home Depot. Bottom line is when you come in to shop, you’re part of the neighborhood and treated as such.

I had to go get some keys made here for work. The gentleman who welcomed me was lovely, but the gentleman who made my keys for me was not quite as much.
I needed multiple copies of multiple keys, and I felt like I was interrupting his day. He said something to me like «sorry for the lack of enthusiasm.» And I just wanted to tell him to go outside for five minutes to soak up some sun and put a smile on.
I don’t live around here, so I probably won’t come back… I like my guys at Rittenhouse Hardware better.

Delightful place! Great homey establishment that made me (a girl who rents and considers hanging curtains a formidable task) feel very comfortable and right at home. I got advice and instructions for securing heavy curtain rods into drywall without being made to feel like an inferior human being!
The place is small, definitely your corner hardware store, but has a well-​rounded inventory neatly displayed.
The staff is darling and I was called «dear» several times which made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside on a cold dreary day.

Among the last of a dying breed, Cohen & Co. Hardware is an old-​school gem in an increasingly coarse and impersonal corporate world.
The other reviews on this wonderful little family business say it all… but I would like to add that I think that it is imperative that anyone interested in doing their part to encourage a real human touch in this modern world has a duty to patronize places like this.

Cohen’s has more than my appreciation. It has my total respect.
From the minute you walk in, you’re family. They chat you up. They trade restaurant suggestions. You want to know where to eat in Philly, forget Unilocal.Talk to the Cohens. They won’t steer you wrong.
You want to brainstorm how to repair or improve something in your home, they can help.
You need a handyman, they’ll hook you up. In fact they’ve done this for me twice already, with great results.
Hooks, nails, hinges, latches, drain stops, chicken wire … they supply me with every conceivable random thing I decide I need that day, and there’s never a lick of sales pressure. They are nice, they listen, and they go out of their way to save you money.
If they don’t have exactly the thing you want, they’ll tell you where you can get it (like today, they told me where I could find quality lumber for one of my little home projects, for cheap, right in the neighborhood a few blocks away.)
Or, they’ll order what you want and it will come right away.
I am proud to live in a city with such outstanding local independent businesses, and Cohen’s is top of the heap.

This store is small and may not have everything you need, but it is certainly convenient, and you can buy individual screws and bolts. The staff are really nice.
I came in with a special Ikea bolt and the clerk was able to fashion a replacement out of a different kind of bolt. I don’t think they would do that at Home Depot.
