Run of the mill newsstand/sundry shop in 30th Street Station. It’s a little more expensive than elsewhere but convenient when getting on or off the train.

Oh, the hatah’s gonna hate. It’s not that previous Unilocal reviews are wrong: the employees are a bit thick and slow here and maybe more than a little on the rude side and couldn’t tell you a thing about what they have in stock. But compared to previous incarnations of the newsstand at 30th Street station, dating back at least the thirty-plus years I’ve been going through here, it’s a veritable temple. They actually have books in the bookstore, not just a few dozen paperbacks and some porn. There are some decent titles here, and an extensive kids’ and young adults’ section. The notable lacuna is a decent local interest/history section, which is odd given its proximity to Amtrak, but you *can* buy a model train. There’s snacks and beverages and the usual array of trinket souvenirs. No, it’s no Strand or Powell’s or even Hudson Booksellers, but it’s a huge improvement over anything on the spot before so I daub it with, snap, one, two, three stars and give it the Completely Adequate For What It Is award. Shazam! Next up: I compare Jersey Mike’s to the old Horn & Hardhart.

So I don’t disagree with he fellow Unilocalers — the employees are loud and obnoxious(you kind of feel like you walked into someone’s hang out spot and you are interrupting an inside joke), but they try to help the customers out as much as possible. I went here to pick up some snacks before getting on the train. The employees were a little slow, but they went along with my friendly banter and I had no issues at check out.

I stopped in this store yesterday morning before a long day of meetings. I needed a phone charger because I forget mine at home. I was horrified at the employees. At one point the women said«Can I help you?» and turned around and walked away. I had to leave the store I was so angry but I still needed a charger. After swallowing my pride, I walked back to try again. After their sighs and eye rolls I decided this was quite possibly the worst place in Philadelphia. Why are you so mad at your customers!!!

Why, oh why, employees of this bookstore at 30th Street Station, do you seem like you want to kill not just me but each and every customer who comes in to buy something? The daggers you all collectively shoot through your piercing eyes are eerie, and make me want to run away in terror. But alas, I usually forget to bring a book or magazine or at least need some friggin’ water for my train ride, so I come here anyway. So I guess that makes me the big dummy. But at least I have a soul. And you guys will always be meanies.

It has everything you need from a bookstore in a train station with the added bonus of un-attentive associates, discussing why charles hasn’t called in 3 days and the baby needs more formula but there isn’t anymore money in their Wachovia account.
