The service was horrible! I walked in to return one of the items I bought online, and I said«I’d like to make a return» to the cashier. He stared at me without saying anything for 5 sec. I said, confused: «Who should I talk to?» He said, «I am waiting for you to take your stuff out of the bag.» I said, «You didn’t say a thing so I thought I asked the wrong person…» After I took out the item for return, he was chatting with another staff all the time and didn’t talk to me another sentence. I thought I needed to swipe my card as the machine showed so I asked him if I should do so. He said impatiently, «I’ll let you know!» That’s the last sentence he said to me. Pissed.

I ended up at Finish Line to buy some new running shoes after mine broke. The sales guy who helped me was attentive to the point of making me uncomfortable. Figuring this would back him off, I mentioned that I am married. He continued to be overly-friendly, and said things like«I am very proud of myself, I haven’t even hit on you at all yet!» and(to another sales guy) «Don’t even waste your time, she’s mine and she’s married.» I hurriedly grabbed and bought the shoes I wanted, and as he was walking me out the door he continued to spout wildly unprofessional comments like«with that smile and those shoes, you’ll be getting hit on all over your gym.» and«your husband better watch out now!» I’m not sure if he thought this was helpful or was trying to be complimentary, but I left feeling thoroughly sleezed-out.

Needed some sneakers and didn’t feel like paying $ 100. Mission accomplished with my brand new Nike’s from Finish Line($ 70) and a cheap«Pastry» T-Shirt(Pastry is Russell Simmon’s daughters Angela and Vanessa’s destined-to-fail clothing line) for $ 6.99. Sales person was surprisingly helpful and the store was nearly empty. City Sports is a nicer store, but I scored cheap kicks here and that suits me fine. SUITUP!!!

On my lunch breaks I used to check out both FLs, Foot Locker and Finish Line. Typically I found myself leaving Foot Locker after about 4 minutes of being ignored and remembering that I never find something I liked there. I would then head to Finish Line and be slightly more enthused. I find Finish Line to be the lesser of the two evils although I tend to pass on both if I have the choice.

Despite whatever preconceived notions you may have about national shoe chains, things are done differently in Philly. Finish Line, for example, devotes half of their stock to lifestyle/retro sneakers. If you want the latest things that Nike, Adidas, and Rebok have released, go here. Granted, you’ll pay a premium. The FL gets the wildest, most flamboyant colors in, to combat the black and white classic approach across the street at Foot Locker, without completely rolling the dice on some craziness(craziness that I love) at the Mom & Pops. The staff here is much friendlier than at Foot Locker, and while I typically prevent my money from going to either, I prefer this one any day of the week.
