Fluent City

I took level 2 Spanish, and it was very disappointing. My teacher was nice but literally just had us go over exercises in the workbook all class long – we didn’t have any opportunities to practice conversation at ALL. It was so boring that by the end all but me and one other student had dropped it.
Also, the teacher was a native Spanish speaker from Spain, which presented some difficulties. She didn’t seem to have any training in Spanish grammar, so there were concepts that I learned in advanced Spanish in high school that she was unfamiliar with. Also, she was pretty snobbish about Latin-​American Spanish being «wrong» in the ways in differed from Spain Spanish. Pretty annoying since this is America.
As I said, the teacher was nice and I don’t completely blame her. Fluent city shouldn’t be charging hundreds of dollars for courses taught by teachers who seem to have received little to no training. Understanding something yourself doesn’t mean you know how to teach it.

I second the opinion that your class is solely dependent on how good your teacher is. But then again, isn’t that almost always the case? Had an incredible teacher, Noël Straight, as my Spanish 2 teacher. Seriously can’t say that enough. She was energetic, prepared, informative, encouraging, supportive, the list goes on. Easily one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. The class was small and the people in it were enjoyable to learn with. Couldn’t recommend this more

I am three classes away from finishing French 3 with Maria. I really like the class and the format of instruction (no English spoken!). With only two students we have plenty of opportunities to speak and Maria encourages us to talk about abstract concepts, not just the standard phrases/​questions everybody learns. She is also excellent at explaining why things are said as they are and also giving us helpful tips on how French is really spoken, not just textbook style learning. It’s challenging and there is a lot of homework, so don’t think you can just breeze through the class. However, I feel that I’ve learned a lot in the seven weeks. The books are helpful as well. My only criticism is that I wish the class started earlier than 6:30. Overall I would definitely recommend Fluent City.

I have a feeling that your outcome will depend solely on which teacher you have, but I have to say that my teacher, Anthony, did a great job with Italian I (I think he teaches the level 2 course too, but not sure). The class size was small enough so that people get lots of chances to participate and despite my lack of Italian skills, he never makes me feel embarrassed.
I’d definitely recommend this class as a great start to learning Italian!

every monday, my mom and i take a private italian lesson with anthony. he is patient, flexible, and fun. he spends time reviewing the previous lesson, gives a realistic amount of homework, and has confidence in us. i am sooooo glad i decided to take lessons! my schedule is too hectic for evening classes, but lessons can be scheduled to suit me! perfecto!

I’m currently about three-​quarters of the way through my French 1 class with Fluent City, and I couldn’t be happier! My teacher, Monica, is fantastic– she is such a lover of the language and is so passionate about it… it’s a pleasure to learn from someone who enjoys teaching and explaining the nuances of French. Seven classes in, and I feel like I have a real handle on the language.
Great value for the money, excellent, positive vibe– Fluent City is really great. Onto French 2… and Italian 1…

Fluent City Rip Off!
What an enormous waste of time and money. It’s more entertainment than real education. Lindsay is a warm, bubbly instructor who complained that her feet hurt, taught barefoot, and relied completely on her iPhone Apps to teach the class. She was approachable to the point of being unfocused. She couldn’t stay on subject to save her life. But rather was full of meaningless anecdotes and could barely conjugate a verb! Most of her stories centered on how hard it was to learn Spanish and then she’d turn on her phone to look up words like pyramid, sailboat, etc. The majority of class time was spent walking about saying «Hola» to other classmates. Oh, yeah and you get a 20 page handout but no useful language skills! When I expressed disappointment with the progress of the class and complained about the subpar level of instruction, I was asked to transfer to another class and pay another $ 100 on top of the $ 300 I had already wasted on this travesty of a class. Lindsay was an adorable scatter-​brain who couldn’t transfer knowledge to a Noble Prize winner. Fluent City is a hipster doofus business that doesn’t care if you learn a language as long as you’re entertained while they keep swiping your credit card. If you want to really learn a language, you are better off going to a REAL language institute or a community college. This place is a RIP OFF and a JOKE!!! Keep your credit card in your wallet and learn Spanish somewhere else!!! Totally not worth the investment unless you are looking for a real laugh!!!

I have been wanting to learn Spanish for years. As a teacher, this has been extremely helpful. I take Spanish every Tuesday with Lindsay. She is great! She is helpful and very knowledgeable about the language.
In just 3 classes I have been able to better communicate with my students and their parents, which is my goal. I would definitely recommend anyone interested in taking Spanish, or any other language, sign up at Fluent City.
The Groupon was an added bonus!

Learning Spanish has been on my to-​do list for years. Thanks to a grouponish deal and a night apparently surfing the web on Ambien, I woke up one morning with an email confirming my enrollment in Spanish 1 on Tuesday nights in Philly.
Best Ambien decision ever.
Our instructor, Lindsay, is just a natural teacher. She’s so approachable, friendly, and funny that she brings the whole class together. And I’m recognizing more Spanish after just one class. There’s so little pressure that learning in this setting is just fun. I really can’t wait until the whole group starts going out after Tuesday evening classes. I have a feeling that it’s bound to be a blast.
