Its been quite long while since I saw a new art gallery descend upon Old City, which is especially sad given the fact that I’ve seen more either closing for good or moving onto a different location. So when my Friend Ingrid clued me in on Hooloon Gallery opening, I saw it as a beacon of hope. And overall Its a fine reminder of the kind of galleries that I loved to inhabit during my First Friday adventures of the past. Hooloon does a great job of featuring an original showcase of 2 original artists within every couple of months. But they’ve also even had a couple of works by the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat and local graphic novelist Charles Burns on display for some very rare showings that I wish I caught. This First Friday I was enamored by the eclectic pieces of Staver Klitgaard and Devon Reiffer. And in the past I was enamored by the small cityscapes with animated characters by Guillaume Cornet that channeled memories of Where’s Waldo. And the constant in the back of their display area always seems to be artworks that channel memories of graphic novel pages. While it is still somewhat new and finding its footing, Hooloon Gallery is definitely a welcome new destination among my First Friday tour of usual suspects. And its one of those galleries that I could easily see getting better with age.
