I like this place most for the novelty of focusing on something as simple and comforting as pie. I’ve tried the savory and would most definitely come back for the sweet. That being said, the pies themselves are quite simple and are not packing a ton of unique flavor. I left torn between feeling satisfied with the simplicity of it and feeling let down by the plainness. Either way, you’re in for an experience.

Wanted to like it. The shop itself is really quaint. The waitress is very friendly. The pie was ok. Seems like I could make it at home. Not enough selection.

Pie is probably one of my favorite desserts, so you can only imagine my excitement when I found out about Magpie in Philadelphia. I wish I had gone more often, to be honest, because the pies are just that good. The shop is small, cute + quaint — just as you would imagine a pie shop to look like. The décor inside is lovely. The menu is simple. My favorite part is definitely the fact that there are SWEET and SAVORY menu options. Delicious! I always opted for the sweet, but I’ve heard great things about the savory as well. Piece sizes are pretty large — my 2 friends I comfortably split one — and the price is what you would expect for a gourmet pie shop. Definitely a great place to hang out, grab a piece of dessert, and chat with friends. It is one of a kind, and so are the pies!

Oh mama I do loves me some pie ! This is a fantastic establishment serving up some of the best pies in the city. Magpie you won me over with your decadent, and savory creations. M~ is for Marvelous. You’d be astonished with this shop serving an incredible product. A~ is for Amazing. You’ll be saying this, wondering where has this been all this time. G~ is for Glorious. Something so delightful that will have moaning with every bite. P~ is for Perfection.(or Pie) Every bite from the savory to the sweet is perfection. I~ is for Intense. You’ll get an intense rush to your taste buds with every bite. E~ is for Exquisite. Something this rich and decadent is served to everyone who comes in. Who would have thought that a slice of pie could be so damn unbelievable. I mean it is a softer version of cake, and we all love cake. Magpie you guys are a solid 5 star type of establishment everyday, all day. Simply awesome with the savory, sweet, down to the coffee that is served. Keep up with the phenomenal work guys.

I’m not usually a sweets person. So you’d think I wouldn’t do well in a pie shop, right? Magpie may have just proved this wrong. Repeat after me: light flakey crust, sweet potatoes, black bean chili, blue corn tortilla chips, crema. What a delightful pot pie! It came out piping hot but my overzealous eyes took over and caused me to try it a lot too soon. Burn! But seriously, once it cooled down it was fantastic. It came with a side salad and was definitely meal sized. So fresh! So tasty! I had a bite of the butterscotch bourbon and a bite of the thoroughbred. It was the same flakey, wonderful crust and sweet fillings that had this savory fan enjoying herself with the pot pie. Sugar, butter, flour… I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and give Magpie nothing high praise.

For now I guess I don have a super strong opinion on Magpie as I went against what I would normally order at a dessert place. Started off with the savory pies which I thought were decent but were a bit expensive considering they were not all out amazing. As for the sweet pies — the sweet potato pie was too sweet and I just wasn’t a fan of their oreo looking pie. Next time I’ll definitely go for one of the fruit pies since that’s usually more of my thing. I have no doubt that they will be fabulous!

Recently took the pie making class and enjoyed it immensely. I’ve made many pies over the years and was a concerned I wouldn’t get much from this class but boy was I wrong. The owner is so passionate and enthusiastic about pie making and gave a ton of important tips and techniques that I think any home baker would find helpful. The class is well worth the $ 75 fee. Included is a cup of coffee or tea and a slice of pie of your choice. We split the sour cherry and Bourbon. Both were exceptional. You also go home with the pie you made and a whole new perspective of pie making. Highly recommend!

Dessert pies are amazing(and expensive) !!! The savory dinner pies are really not that good(and very expensive) The staff is okay — not too rude, but not noticeably friendly either — kinda nonchalant — which can be a good thing or a bad ! The space is realllllllllyyyyy tight ! You’ll be fighting for elbow room with the person sitting next to you. It is worth a try!

Good pie but a bit pricey. I’ve been meaning to stop by for a while so I was happy when I got a chance this past Friday. I ordered the butterscotch bourbon at the urging of many, and while it wasn’t my first choice I ended up being really happy with it. The pie was sweet but not too sweet with a thick albeit flakey crust. They also have the option to do any of their pies a la mode(with vanilla from bassets or their homemade butterscotch ice cream)! I am a firm believer in the pie + ice cream combo so was really happy about that. The pie was 5.75 and the ice cream was 2 so all in all it definitely wasn’t cheap, but you pay for the atmosphere and the service as well, both of which are great.

This is a pie bar. What an amazing concept. Food and service was 5 star. Shout-out to Madison, our«pie-tender,» who was super nice and attentive and went above and beyond to make our experience great. We came here for dessert and sat at the bar. The caramel sauce that goes on the apple pie is SOGOOD. I could drink it from the bottle. They also take the leftover pie crust and make it into little yummy cookie-like strips that are fantastic. Cookies and cream pie was on point. It had this amazing crispy vanilla crumbs on top, Oreo crust, and perfect filling. What I loved was that the pie was definitely sweet, but it wasn’t the kind of too sweet where you can only eat a bite or two before all your teeth fall out. This place definitely satisfies sweet tooth cravings of all kinds, and kills with the friendly service.

My favorite pie place in this city! Every year I make it a point to go for Pi day when they have select pies for $ 3.14! I love that they celebrate it. Their butterscotch bourbon pie is soft and rich and the crust is perfect. Their chicken pot pie is also savory perfection. The chicken is tender and flavorful and paired with the salad and cranberry sauce, it is a very comforting dish. The place itself is a charming and small establishment and one can always have a cup of coffee and pie at the counter or have a more hearty meal at the tables.

It’s pi day, so I did a quick google search to find the best pie in Philly, number one on the list was Magpie’s Butterscotch Bourbon pie, so I made a trip out there and got two slices of butterscotch bourbon and one of pecan at the waitresses’ suggestion. The checkout process was really fast and the girl was super helpful when I asked about her favorite pies. I was in and out with my togo pies in just two minutes. After driving my precious cargo home, I decided to take a bite of each, intending to save my favorite of the two flavors for last. Both are delicious, but the butterscotch bourbon is absolutely amazing. I’m so glad I got two pieces so I can share one with my friend so she knows just how delicious it is. I can’t believe I’d never visited this place before. And now that I know about it, I will definitely be back on Wednesdays or Fridays for their specials. I also read on someone’s review about a pie making class? And you’d better believe if I ever figure out when that is, I will definitely be going to that. I love pie, and this place definitely hits it straight out of the park. One day I will try all of the pies they offer. And I’m sure none of them will ever disappoint.

I had really high hopes for my experience here. It was good but not quite as good as I anticipated. The selection looked great. I was in for a savory option since it was lunchtime. The pie of the day was a lemon black raspberry and it looked great but not something I was down for. I got the sweet potato chili pie — essentially chili in a ramekin-size pie crust bowl. It was good but not something I couldn’t(or wouldn’t) be able to make at home. In fact I just picked up sweet potatoes to make a vegan version. While I love inspiration to make something at home, when I eat out I dont want to feel like I could have done it at home myself. I noticed also that the waitress only suggested the specials when asked. Maybe you’re not just pushing stuff that is on its way out but it sure looks like that. So, this place was good but didn’t meet my expectations. Perhaps I’ll give it a try for dessert and see what happens.

I may be one of the few who think that this place is a little overrated. Don’t get me wrong — I do love the ambiance of this place tucked in on South Street and the pies are good, but for me it was a little too hyped up. A few friends and I came after eating at Entrée BYO(just a few stores down, conveniently), and came here for dessert. It took quite a while to get our orders in, since there was only one person manning the tables. We ordered a sweet pie and a savory one — I liked the savory one a lot; the pie crust was very buttery and the filling was extremely hearty. In comparison, the sweet pie(a Mexican chocolate pie) faded into the background.

This is a nice little shop that has variety of rotating savory and sweet pies. We ordered the meatball and chicken pot pie. I thought it was a little pricey for the meal($ 9.5) for the pies, but you get a side salad with your meal if you dine in. The meatball pie was good — came stuffed with 6 – 7 meatballs at least. The sauce was a little sour, fresh melted mozzarella on top and the crust was very crisp. Definitely full after the meal. Chicken pot pie was okay — standard pot pie, nice parm puff pastry on top. Would’ve liked to try the sweets, but we were pretty full. I think this is also BYOB(?). Not a bad spot

Magpie is an underappreciated gem of Philadelphia, garnering lots of deserved local and national press. In fact, while watching a WHYY program about local restaurants, I suddenly realized 10 minutes into the show that Magpie was just a 10 minute walk away, turned off the TV and went there, and have never been disappointed since. This is a bit of a second career for the owner, who used to work in public relations and then quit to go to culinary school. Good for her. They’ve been dishing out all manner of pies, sweet and savory, ever since. They sometimes make their own ice cream. I haven’t had the milkshakes, but they look great. I have, however, had the steamers, and they are great. You might also be interested in the pie classes. I wondered in and left a few hours later with an entire strawberry rhubarb pie, plus got a slice served to me while we waited for the pies to cook. Give the savory pies a shot. There are pot pies, shepherds pie, but I’ve also had a pie of sweet potatoes, black beans and chili. They also had a pie with butternut squash, which I would gladly eat once a week for the next year if they had it. Sweet pies are great and traditional. I’ve yet to see a Shoo Fly Pie(because you people don’t order them), but they do sometimes have Sweet Potato Pie(the queen of pies) among many others.

I rushed into this place while wondering the town when it began snowing. When I came in, the place was somewhat empty and I grabbed a seat at the bar. As soon as I spotted the pies on display I wished I hadn’t just come from a huge brunch because my goodness those pies looked to die for. They had several warm and cold pies– all sweet and a pie milkshake, where they’d put ice cream and a piece of pie in a blender. Since I was full but I’d heard nothing but great things I decided to try a mocha — I’d heard the hot chocolate was to die for but I needed some caffeine and I wasn’t disappointed; it was delicious. This place would be adorable for a date– alone or with a significant other. Great atmosphere and product, plus top notch service.

I was searching for some fun things for my fiancé and I to try. Magpie offers a pie making class but that was completely booked. I searched their website and good news: Magpie has a pie and beer flight special. Bad News: It was not occuring when I visited. I called earlier in the day and asked if you had to book a reswrvation for the pie and beer flight event tonight or are they just walk-in, I was told«oh just walk in». I checked the date on the website and was more than certain it said they would be participating on the night I visited. While I’ll admit we were a little annoyed by this, it was, partially my fault. While we didn’t recieve what we initially came for, these pies are out of this world amazing. Now I understand why they advertise on their website when they will start taking pre-orders around the holiday. On to the good stuff: Chocolate pear– the sliced and perfectly arranged pear sliced paired perfectly with a small amount of chocolate on the bottom. Not too sweet. Tiramisu– I love tiramisu make it a pie and it’s over the top in the best way possible. The coffee and chocolate flavor was nicely balanced into a pie that did not fall part when you cut into it. Mexican Hot Chocolate– SUPRISINGLY!!! My favorite. Chocolate, cinnamon goodness with a fun kick of cayenne at the end Oatmeal Cookie– nice combination of cinnamonand oats. Not my favorite but if you love the cookie version you will love this Dutch Apple Crumble– Classic. Nice sliced slivers of apple stacked and cooked perfectly so that the pie doesn’t fall apart. It’s so important for the pie to not fall apart. Butterscotch Bourbon– No, this is my favorite. Ok I can’t decided. Very sweet but sometimes you need that and a very pronounced bourbon taste that was lovely. You must try this. While the confusion left a bad taste in my mouth, the pies excelled in all other aspects. The ladies that took care of us during our visit were very attentive and nice to us. I will absolutely visit again. I have my eye on the coconut crème and lime basil!

A must visit not only for dessert lovers, but really anyone who loves good savory food. Oh my god. Why haven’t I been hearing more about this place? A delightful quaint hole in a wall with a diner-meets-your-grandmother’s-kitchen feel to it, Magpie specializes in, you guessed it, different types of pies. Sweet delicious pies and savory pies, like chicken pot pies and mac & cheese pies. My group of friends and I were fortunate enough to come during their Pie & Beer Flight nights, which for $ 21 includes one Savory Pie, three slices of sweet pie, and beers to match. I was able to sample the Chicken Pot Pie(with Apple fennel stuffing and cranberry sauce) and the Mac & Cheese Pot Pie(with Old Bay Cheese-it). Oh my god were these delicious — the crust was flaky and golden brown, essential to both dishes. The Pot Pie was hearty, with lots of vegetables stewed in a thick gravy. The Mac & Cheese… just perfection. The melted cheese was the perfect consistency of liquid and thickness, a gooey perfect dish. Next out were the sweet pies — caramel apple, lemon gingersnap, and butterscotch. I mean, it’s tough to choose just one, but I’d give the edge to caramel apple — packed with slices of apple with a perfect pie crust. We were also given samples of beer to match each pie, which was Sam Adams brand Boston Lager, Angry Orchard Ginger Cider, DogFish Head, and Sierra Nevada Stout. I was skeptical at first, but I must admit the beers and cider really went with the pies, and even if they didn’t, the beer reps game us more than enough beer to make it worthwhile. In sum, even if you don’t make it to the the Pie & Beer Flight, make an effort to come to Magpie and taste some of the most delicious pies you’ll ever taste. The secret is the crust, which is perfect in every way possible, along with the high quality ingredients. I plan on revisiting this place often.

I’ve been to Magpie twice now; once to eat and once to learn(and eat again). The first time Dining Partner and stopped in we ordered a flight of three slices of pie. We had the blueberry, smore’s, bourbon peach. All were good, the blueberry had an unexpected citrus flavor that I could have done without. It was during this visit that I saw Magpie did pie baking classes, so a friend and I signed up. We took our Magpie pie class about two weeks ago and it was great fun. It wasn’t cheap, about $ 65 but worth it if you consider pie baking a life skill like I do. The class began at 5:30pm on a Thursday and ended around 8pm. First, Holly demonstrated how to make the pie crust and then for time purposes we were given pre-made pie crust. We learned how to properly roll out, line the pie tin, prepare the filling and techniques for other types of pie. I also ended up buying the Magpie cook book, because the great thing about this class is that you take it just once and you have a foundation for endless pie recipes. While we waited for our pies to bake we enjoyed a slice of pie for ourselves. My friend and I split the pumpkin pie and pear ginger. If you go, get the pear ginger pie. it’s really great. This would be a great mother-daughter experience or a girls night out event. Highly reccommended.
