Manita Burrito(formerly Freekah Burrito) is nothing short of fantastic. At present, they take over the kitchen at Mugshots Coffeehouse from Thursday to Sunday nights for select hours and it is genius. Manita’s mission is focused around the use of local, fresh stuff. They’re also dirt cheap. My three carnitas tacos cost $ 6 and were outstanding. They braise the shredded pork with beer, pineapples and citrus, and that makes for quite the tasty tacos. Portions aren’t lacking, either. I shared a taco and still couldn’t finish the remaining two. The sodas aren’t to be missed either. I hope they can launch their own space soon!

Wonderfully flavorful Fairmount-proud BYOB burrito joint specializing in creative and fresh burritos using locally-sourced ingredients. Prices that rival Qdoba and Chipotle while boasting flavors and sourcing practices that beat the living crap out of them. Manita Burrito is bound for glory. Manita is a delicious, fresh Mexican-inspired venture from Chef Michael O’ Halloran(Bistro 7) and long-time Fairmount resident and entrepreneur Noam Kugelmass. The Manita crew focuses upon using local, ethically-sourced meats and cheeses, and prides itself on serving their range of robust and delicious burritos in handmade tortillas(with outrageous homemade guac). Manita is unique in a number of ways. You’d be hard pressed to find a tastier burrito in our area, let alone one made with fresh and local ingredients. You’d be harder pressed still to find a burrito in the country — or the world — where an ancient MIddle Eastern grain called freekeh is offered as a straight substitute for rice. This hearty grain, almost like a heartier quinoa, is packed with nutrients, and complements the smoky Manita salsas extremely well. So get you a filling, nutritious bean burrito with freekeh, and be liberal with the spicy salsa. Or for a treat, order the Ropa Viejo(again choosing freekeh over rice), a slow-cooked, delicately smoky beef burrito that is one for the ages. Currently, you can find Manita operating out of the kitchen of Mugshots’ Coffeehouse on Fairmount Avenue, Thursday through Sunday evenings for the foreseeable future.
