Man the Philly food truck scene is exploding. There’s almost a new truck here every other week. M.A.T.T.‘s is one of the newst on the block, and its a solid place for some sliders. Just passing by the truck, the paint job, menu, and the word«Gourmet» in its name gives it a sense of being on the higher end of things in price and, hopefully, quality. I’m typically not a fan of expensive food trucks cause I think it defeats the purpose, and I had no intention of trying this place out, until one day when I was really craving a burger. Having the option of just getting one of the original sliders($ 3.50), and being next to Dos Hermanos, I was able to combine it with a couple delicious and cheap tacos next door. The slider itself was good, not anything particularly special, but good. As far as beef burgers go, it doesn’t compare to Spot Burger. However, the next week, I saw on their Twitter feed they had a chicken sliders special(2 chicken burger sliders + fries for $ 7), which sounded moderately healthy and cheap enough to convince me to try it. I don’t think I’ve ever had a chicken burger before, but these were amazing. The ground chicken(which sounds weird, but wasn’t) was perfectly seasoned with spices and fresh herb(cliantro?) and topped with garlic aioli sauce, lettuce, and tomato. It was seared nicely and really juicy on the inside. Two sliders sounded like it wouldn’t have been enough, but it was served with a generous portion of fries with sea salt and were fried really well. It probably sounds silly to say the fries are fried well, but its actually hard to find well-seasoned, not overfried fries around here. This is where Matt’s has a leg up on Spot Burger. In summary, I was really pleasantly surprised by the chicken sliders and hope they have them as a special more often. For the original sliders, you can get 3 for $ 10, but you also get fries with it, so its actually not a bad deal at all.

Matt’s is a relatively new food truck that opened on Drexel’s campus and it’s specialty is sliders. Everyone from gourmet foodies to comfort food seekers will be right at home here. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients are used to create such memorably named sliders such as «Quackers»(slow-cooked, seared duck confit tossed in a homemade hoisin BBQ sauce and stuffed inside a steamed bun with napa slaw), «Porkies»(fried pork belly paired with fresh apple chutney and a spiced honey mustard spread), and the«Illadelphia»(filet mignon with your choice of cheese… need I say more?). You can buy one slider(hint: one is not enough) for anywhere from $ 3.50(the price of a slider burger) to $ 4.50, or three gourmet sliders for $ 12, which includes fries(hint: get the three for $ 12 deal so you can try all three of these delicious creations). The Illiadelphia looks like a little cheesesteak and it is loaded with juicy, tasty goodness in every bite. I got mine with Gruyère cheese, but there are three other cheese choices if Gruyère isn’t your thing. The Porkie looks like a little pork sandwich with thinly sliced pork belly that chews more like bacon than the thicker slices of pork belly I like. Big ups for the sauce. The Quacker was a bit of a disappointment for me. There was very little duck meat in it, unlike the pictures they show on their web site. It was good, but more meat was needed. Service from ordering to pickup was relatively quick, so I’ll give 3.5 stars for this first visit. Definitely 4 stars for the Illadelphia, 3 for the other sandwiches, and a little bonus for basically free fries in the meal.
