It still boggles my mind that people haven’t heard of Steak Queen. For one thing, it is arguably the most visible truck on 38th Street, right next to the 38th Street bridge and right at the foot of the footpath that people often taken from Locust Walk to Yue Kee or Bui’s. Steak Queen is my most frequented food truck, and for good reason. The main reason are the specials, the Egg Sub and Lamb Sub. Both are structurally about the same sandwich, with daikon, cilantro, jalapeño, and Queen’s Sauce(the answer to Bui’s sauce?), and your choice of protein. I have only once opted for something other than one of these two, that’s how good they are. It’s a slightly Americanized banh mi sandwich, and I love banh mi. My only complaint is that the heat level in the subs differs from sandwich to sandwich, probably depending on the quantity or spiciness of the jalapenos that day. As for convenience, you can also call in to Steak Queen with your order. The man who runs the truck isn’t as friendly as Mrs. Bui or even the Kim’s lady(but definitely friendlier than Yue Kee hehe). He’s also only open until the mid-afternoon, so it’s just breakfast and lunch here. Plus, the truck is closed for the summer apparently, so while the truck may be there these few months, no luck.

I think there’s about 4 better sandwich carts within walking distance of steak queen. I eat food carts, but even I question what is in my steak queen sandwich. Never get the steak queen sauce! It’s an off-putting creamy and thicky yellowy. If you’re going to come here… get the steak. It’s the only meat I can eat without stopping halfway through to question my existence. The cheese was gross and any veggies I tried here were not the move. Go to Bui’s or Hemo’s– much better sandwich carts in my opinion within walking distance of this cart.

The steak itself was quite good, but the cheese wiz was hard to notice. I would be nice if they included a bit more. There was also a slightly over-salted aspect to it and I’m not sure whether it was from the steak or the cheese wiz. The bread was nice, but after a few minutes of walking somewhere before eating the sandwich, the bread had become soggy. It’s probably best to eat it immediately after being served.

Kim’s and Yue Kee’s were crowded during lunchtime so I strode over to Steak Queen. I don’t particularly enjoy steaks so I was very happy to see that gyros were on the menu. Ordered a lamb gyro, got it in 3 minutes. Lots of lettuce, 4 pieces of lamb ham, a tomato, some red onion, a few fries, and some tzatziki sauce wrapped in a warm pita. Not bad. Added a dash of ketchup for taste. Overall, light and tasty enough for my liking.

My review is for a cheesesteak only. It was ok, nothing special. I prefer Hemo’s. Aparently the breafast sandwiches here are popular, maybe next time I will try one.

If you’re too hungover to walk to Bui’s, and want a ton more eggs in your roll, Steak Queen’s your best bet. But the Bui’s sauce is what makes the perfect greasy breakfast, and you can’t get that at Steak Queen.

Back when I was on campus, I split my time fairly evenly between Steak Queen and Bui’s, with Bui’s winning out slightly more because it was closer to my dorm(Harrison), and I was too lazy to take the extra minute to walk over to Steak Queen. That being said, their breakfast sandwiches are very comparable. If I’m in the mood for a load of saltiness, Bui’s was the way to go. But Steak Queen has slightly heartier(i.e. cheesier) sandwiches, so I’d pick that up if I was in the mood. I’d also rate the cheesesteaks from here slightly higher than those from Bui’s as well — they didn’t skip on the cheese/Whiz. It wasn’t the quality of a Pat’s, but it was still solid. A good, cheap stop for a hangover sandwich or a bite to grab on the go. Of the various things I miss about my college days, having a varied selection of food trucks around is definitely towards the top of the list.

My Steak Queen experience was outstanding! After a highly disappointing experience at Pat’s King of Steaks the day before, the friendly Korean owner of Steak Queen made me a steak sandwich with provolone, lettuce and tomato worthy of – in my case – a King! The ingredients were fresh and plentiful, and the bread was perfect – crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Were I to attend school at the University of Pennsylvania, I’m sure I would visit this wonderful truck more than once a week.

I LOVESTEAKQUEENBREAKFASTSANDWICHES!!! I think they have actually perfected the sausage-egg-cheese breakfast sandwich on a torpedo roll. Make sure you get it with salt-pepper-ketcha! Seriously, my roommates and I in college got breakfast sandwiches from here almost every weekend and we still talk about it when we have reunions or any of us are back in Philly. It’s that good. And dirt cheap to boot.

Bui’s does it better, but Steak Queen will do in a pinch. They offer similar fare as Bui’s but with the addition of some sandwiches like chicken parm and such. Their breakfast sandwich pales in comparison to Bui’s, as the bread is soggy and they use probably 5 lbs of eggs, but if that’s your thing, Steak Queen’s for you.

A nice little food truck on 38th and Locust, just a bit North of the Locust Walk bridge. It’s one of the 4 or 5 food trucks available on the 3800 block between Walnut and Spruce. Serving your typical Philly food truck fare of steaks, breakfast sandwiches, and hoagies, Steak Queen is a convenient and easy place to get a quick lunch bite. Typically less crowded than Bui’s(38th and Spruce), this food truck offers a great chicken parmigiana sandwich. Yes, if you’ve read my other reviews, you’ll notice a trend – I love chicken sandwiches… and string beans. The chicken parm is a delicious grilled chicken breast(not fried or battered) with provolone and covered in tomato sauce and sandwiched in a crusty, yet soft roll. The chicken is juicy and perfectly salt & peppered. It’s served with pretzels on the side, which I like putting into my sandwich to add some crunchiness. Breakfast sandwiches are also good, cheap, and quick… sausage egg & cheese or bacon egg & cheese are the standards for me. Also, call in your order, if you can. Wait time’s ~10 min if you call in or order at the window.
