It’s Mr. Beefy’s now. Why can’t Unilocal get rid of some of these duplications? It’s so sloppy.

Lately no trip to Kirkwood ski resort would be complete without a stop at the Sequoia Drive-In in Pioneer, California. This is a burger joint on the side of highway 88, just about 15 minutes east of Jackson. There are many places you could stop to eat on the drive from the Bay Area to Kirkwood, but not many where you can get served a hand-dipped shake in your choice of like 12 flavors. Yummmmmm! This place also has some unusual items on the menu like barrel roasted chicken. Yesterday, ours was served to us by the owner himself. Juicy and tender and, thank God, not fried. So… at least you can feel like you’re eating something halfway healthy. For the garlic fries lovers out there, definitely make a stop here, but better to do so on the way home from Kwood than on the way there b/c you will smell like garlic the rest of the day. Also on the menu is yummy chili with chunks of beef. We have Sequoia programmed on our cell phone now so that when we get just past Cooks Station on the way down the hill, we can call in our shake orders and have ‘em ready for us when we get to Pioneer.

Great little burger stop at the corner of State Highway 88 and Red Coral Road. Up here, it’s a little like the battle of the burger stands. In one corner you have 88 Burger To Go and in the other corner you have Sequoia Drive In. A little like Geno’s v. Pat’s. You have those that swear by 88 and those that swear by Sequoia.(My mind is not completely made up yet.) I do know that on my visit, Sequoia was serving up some big juicy burgers, crispy fries and dependable onion rings. It’s gotten busier since taking over this location nearly two years ago. That’s a good sign — it means I can look forward to them on my regular treks to Jackson.
