This restaurant is across the street from the Delta in the newly developed area of Pittsburg. They offer good complimentary chips, bean dip and salsa. The beans that accompanied the meals were too thick and pasty. The bean dip taste much better. Our waitress was very nice. She was friendly, patient and always smiling when she was serving us. We ordered three orders of the combination meals with three items, rice and beans for $ 13.75 each. The waitress let us substitute items with their set combination meals. That was a plus. The stuffed pepper(chile relleno), shredded beef tacos, chicken enchiladas and rice were good. The pork(carnitas) tamale was a little too hard. When the food arrived, it was not hot(temperature hot) enough. Wished they baked the food in the oven a little longer. The red sauce was good but a little salty. They have can sodas $ 1.75 such as Pepsi and the server brings you a small plastic cup with a little ice. Bummer for no horchata and for having can sodas. I would come back mainly for their rice.

Food is good. Customer service sucks 50% of the time. Ordered $ 50+ worth of food and had to ask for salsa… got two. Thx.

Went here after about 10 years. Food was ok. I’m Mexican American so I know authentic raised with a 100% Mexican mom who cooked everyday. The chicken salad was good. The iced tea is a bargain and delicious. I would go back but probably would have the salad again. FYI… the burger looked good. Someone in another table had it and it looked good! Service was a little slow but I think we were in between shifts or something.

I came in with my family. I ordered a chimichanga and the server said it came with onions sour cream and guacamole and bell peppers but I told her that I didn’t want bell peppers. So when my order came out I was ready to eat. When I took a bite I immediately grabbed my water my mouth was burning hot something in it was spicy and when I saw the server I told her about it and she claims that its not suppose to be spicy. I told her that well it is and she said it’s not suppose to be. She basically told me to my face I was a liar! Are you serious?! Why would I lie about something being hot on my order?! She’s telling me a customer that I’m a liar? How is an employee telling a customer that they are a liar aren’t customers suppose to be right? After that I didn’t want to eat anything there. Horrible! Never again!

After reading the reviews that the newness of new Mecca wasn’t good I was upset because this place was highly recommended. Anyways, did a order to go, it was correct, the food was good the service was really good. They didn’t give plastic utensils for the huge burrito or napkins so it was a little messy. I was a little confused about the veggies burrito, I assumed it would have grilled veggies, but it was more like a rice and bean burrito with lettuce and cheese. Still good, but wish it had some peppers and onions. The mild salsa was really good too.

Once again I am astonished at how a decades old reputation for good food can keep a resturant alive, even when their quality of food has declined SOMUCH! I started eating here in the mid 80’s…when it WAS the best mexican food around. It continued to be among the best for many years, gaining a bay area wide reputation. Around the same time they had a huge remodel & expanded into a beautifal new space the father turned the ship over to his sons. The ship sank!!! Due to past experience(& Unilocal) I dont eat here anymore… EXCEPT. tonight a very good friend invited me dinner(offering to pay). I ordered the Chili Verde w/beans, rice & veg. soup…$ 12.00 The«„chiili verde“» was regular shredded pork with diced(generic) ortega chilis on top… had to pick the chewy pepper skins out. the soup was veg. stock w/overcooked-mushy potatos, celery, zuccni… no cheese on the referied beans.HEY.the rice was OK MY friends fajitas were bland & unseasoned! AMAZING…HOWISTHISPLACEALWAYSBUSY??? Everyone I grew up with going here agrees that they have gone WAAAY down hill & go to the many other options available in Pittsburg & Antioch Dont go here because you HEARD it was good… it WAS good 15 yrs ago

Good food, local, reasonable pricing and open late. What else could you ask for! This place has been a local gem for the longest time and I have to agree with the rest, still love this place 5 years later

Mecca is one of the best spots for authentic Mexican food! Everytime I go there I order chilaquiles cuz it’s the best I’ve every had. The last time I was there, service was horrible. Our waiter never checked up on us, only brought us our food very late. We asked for more chips and salsa, but never got them since she was waiting tables on the other side and neglected us. I understand the place is busy, but it doesnt make sense to be our waiter if all your tables are on the other side. Im sorry if I’m being too harsh, but i was very hungry while I was waiting for my food and saw that other people who came after us were being served their food :(

im not a new visitor to The Mecca, ive even had them cater for a few of my events. This was my 3rd visit since the remodeling, this time a Valentine’s Day dinner since both my wife and I love good mexican food. The new side was crowded and loud, so we asked to be seated on the old side. A nice cleanup, and it was nice to see the old booths still there. Unfortunately we were seated next to a group of ethnic girls who chose to share their evening conversations and street talk with everyone in the room. Not wanting confrontation we said nothing, even our waitress raised an eye while taking our drink order. I ordered the Special steak dinner with a relleno on the side. My wife ordered her soft tacos dinner. The chips and bean dip were tasty as usual. We cleared through our small bowl of chips waiting for our food. I even finished my soda, and had to request a 2nd to have with my dinner(no refill on can drinks) Oddly, the family who arrived 10 minutes after us in another booth were served their food before us. After about 10 minutes our food arrived. Our waitress presented our food and apologized in that the relleno was the last one, and not perfect, so she would not charge us for it. My steak was delicious, similar to homemade. i loved it. Tortillas were warm, but the edges were hard like they cooled off. The relleno was a failure, with an odd refrigerator like flavor, one bite and that was all it took for me to leave it alone. My wife commented that her tacos were warm, and the wraps were soggy. They fell apart when she picked them up. She resorted to eat the insides with a fork along with her rice and beans. Sorry, Mecca, we loved your food, and supported you over the years. Our drive from Danville, for good mexican food and a special dinner out — turned out to be so disappointing. We are not the kind to demand attention or to complain about our meals. Our waitress was nice and had served us many times in the past. Perhaps that was why we had not said anything. The remodeling was nice, but if something changed in the kitchen, it needs to be changed back or re-examined.

Me and my girls wanted some good tacos so we heard this place has good Mexican food. We walked in and were a bit confused on how to get seated. There was a sign that say please take a seat and wait to be seated. Two of us sat there like for 7 minutes never did someone go up to us, while the other 2 made line in the cashier line. Once they reach the front, the guy said go ahead and sit anywhere. He yelled for a waitress. So we sat down and the nice waistress brought us some tasty bean dip and salsa and chips. They were scrumptious. I order some coffee and a beef burger with cheese. My girls order some flautas, burrito, burger. My coffee was Luke warm and my burger was actually good. My girls falutas were little, just came with 2. Look like fried skinny tacos. She like it but was still hungry. The burrito(carnitas) was enormous and had a good taste. She couldnt finish it. Never did the waistress refill our drinks or offer us water. Good food but needs better service… I will be back.

Bean dip. Damn, I could live off their bean dip. Everything else is okay, but I purely go here for the bean dip. If you’re down to spice up your life, you can add chorizo to it and order flour chips. But honestly, just get the dip… You won’t regret it.

I love the Mecca! I’m truly surprised they don’t have a higher rating as I’ve had nothing but positive experiences here. We’ve catered, done take-out, and dined in the restaurant and everyone’s always been really friendly and prompt. And I love that they are always throwing in freebies and extras. Order of comped chilaquiles at Christmas for the heck of it? Yes, please. Upgraded(and massive) order of bean dip for take-out? Sign me up. I also(obviously) really like the food, which is why we keep coming back. Some of my favorites are the tacos, tamales and carnitas burritos. Yum! I like that they are on the simpler side and you can add whatever you want to them. The burritos for example — I add in some bean dip and salsa and hot sauce if I’m feeling sassy. Anyway, two thumbs up for Mecca!

3.5 based on wife’s love of the famous bean dip. New Mecca seems to have a devout following and has been an institution in the community so I do not want to review harshly. Food is OK. Very reasonably priced and very large portions. Service was friendly. So I will leave it at that.

I tend to favor this place because I’m a pittsburg native but it really is good. A few years ago they expanded from a narrow hole in the wall and now there’s outdoor seating too. All dine in orders come with not only corn tortilla chips but flour chips too, which is my favorite Best crunchy tacos around Chicken Chilaquiles Guisada Bean dip is a classic. Try it with ground beef Police special is a must. It The only thing this place is missing is a full bar. Beer and box wine only is a bunmer

I have never been to a worse«Mexican» place in my life. The service was great, which is why I have it two stars, but do NOT come here if you’re looking to eat Mexican food. I ordered the half order of chilaquiles, and what I got was a plate of chips with cheese, soaking in, what appeared to be sauce. I honestly didn’t even eat it after I took the first bite. It was so horrible!!!

We enjoyed lunch at this Mexican restaurant in Old Town Pittsburg. While other restaurants serve complimentary bread baskets, this place serves up Bean Dip, Salsa and Chips. We didn’t even have to ask; our server just brought them out. They were accompanied by corn and flour tortilla chips for scooping. The ratio of cheese to beans in the dip was about 1:3. The combination of melty cheese, rich mole sauce, creamy beans and crunchy chips was divine! Definitely five stars! I have no idea what the salsa tasted like because I forgot it was even there once I tasted the bean dip. If I’d just had the beany goodness this would probably be a five star review. However, I ordered a Chicken Burrito that was just ok. The chicken was finely shredded and very tender but it needed an herbal injection – some cilantro or something to boost the flavor. It was forgettable and, frankly, not even photo-worthy. Our server was sweet and another guy who I think was the manager was very intent on making sure our first experience there was a good one. Even though the restaurant was busy with the lunch crowd, he came by our table several times to make sure everything was ok. Usually, I can take or leave Mexican cuisine but their Bean Dip and enthusiastic service made New Mecca a solid pick.

~4.5 stars! If this isn’t the heart and soul of Pittsburg, then Pittsburg has no heart or soul. Seriously, this is the treat you’re given growing up in Pittsburg. When there were random parties in school, it was always MECCA food and everybody got excited. The highlight was ALWAYS the chips and bean dip! The first time I went here was before its renovation and I remember thinking how I’d never eat inside there ever again. I’m happy to see that even after their expansions and renovations, they kept the long, narrow bar area with its murals and history. It’s very clean inside and very spacious — I’m surprised Pittsburg has anything this nice in the area! I usually get my food to go, and people who work there are always very kind and friendly, giving the atmosphere as if you’re part of their family. The tall bald manager guy is also the nicest, friendliest and most accommodating guy there — he literally puts a smile on my face even though I’m just picking up my food. Their food is SUPERYUMMY and serve very generous portions. We didn’t realize what we were getting ourselves into when we ordered two large bean dips to go. One alone could easily feed 4 – 5 people. We ordered the chimichanga dinner and ordered Marcela’s Special. Both came with beans and rice(YUM~). I loved how the chimichangas were fluffy and crispy but my favorite is definitely their enchiladas. If by any bizarre means you end up in Pittsburg, the place to go for some good Mexican food is here at the New Mecca Café!

Apart from New Mecca’s attentive and kind service, I found the food to be too salty for my tastebuds. I ordered Marcela’s Special — pork burrito and beef enchilada with rice and beans. You could substitute the meat for anything else, but I figured to go with the pre-selected choice on the menu. The price of this meal was well-worth it for only $ 9.95 because I was stuffed(couldn’t even finish it). The complimentary chips, salsa, and bean dip was an added bonus. I enjoyed that for starters. & The location in downtown Pittsburg is perfect. Right by the water, and you can walk to just about anywhere.
