Meh. Two of my girlfriends and I went here and ordered 4 of their $ 1.50 tacos and one order of French fries and it took nearly 40 minutes with only one other patron dining. I barely had time to eat because I went here on my one hour lunch break and I did not get my food until 10 minutes before my lunch was over. As far as the tacos — they were very small and barely had any fillings. They tasted okay but it was basically pure tortilla. Even though they were cheap, I still expected a little more. The fries were okay –they were actually potato wedges, and that made me sad — they were a little too soggy for my liking and their ranch is pretty watery. We sat outside and their tables and chairs were the cheapest plastic possible and it was really uncomfortable and very unsteady. The inside looked pretty dirty and rundown and it grossed me out a bit. It’s an old building but it definitely needs to be cleaned. Their menu is pretty basic and nothing really sounded appetizing. I will not be going back.

My husband and I decided to try their new breakfast menu(weekends only for now) and it was delicious! They have some nice, different menu items such as Chili Relleno Casserole, Vegetable Fritatta, and Baked Blueberry French Toast. I had their«Super Healthy Greek Yogurt Bowl», which was delicious, and a Mimosa!!! Yum! Hubby had their Sausage and Bacon Fritatta with potatoes and biscuit. Neither of us were able to finish our breakfast and left full and satisfied. We look forward to trying some of the other breakfast items! Service was fast and friendly.

I am writing in response to the unfavorable comments by Karen and Cal. First off we are a humble and gracious family. We do not want anyone to leave the Hoosegow feeling ripped off or that they received poor service. If you don’t let us know we have done something wrong or you are not happy with your meal, how can we fix it? How can you with a clean conscience write something so bad if you did not let us make it right. I assure you no one would have gotten angry. To Karen, the Friday you came in was one of our busiest Fridays on record. I am truly sorry your service was so bad. I believe you! It was one of our craziest days. We would gladly have taken care of your ticket and given you a gift certificate for another free meal. That is what we do. I can’t really speak for your food as I wasn’t there. I do know that all half BLT’s get 2 pieces of bacon and I know this because that is how we portion them. You’re right our chili does have a seasoning packet in it. It is one that we purchase from the old owner. Many of his peeps love his chili. I’m not a big fan that is why we offer Grandpa’s Chili. There are 3 different kinds of chili on our menu. You could have told us you did not like it and we would have gladly changed it out. We also give free samples. We would love to attempt to make you happy again. Please come in and tell us who you are and we will buy you lunch and make it right. If you come in on a Saturday, I will be working. My name is Brenda I am Aaron’s wife. Since that Friday, we have re-grouped. Thank you, Cal, to you, I agree that chili is different and I myself do not really care for it. However, the previous owner has quite a large following for that chili. So, I brought in my dad’s chili. Many people prefer that. It is really good on the burgers. You absolutely could have requested to try all 3 chilis or asked for something else. Again, if you do not give us the opportunity to make things right, how can you post such a negative review? We will bend over backwards to make our Hoosegow family happy. We would love to make things right with you as well. Please come in and let us know that you were not happy with your chili burger and we will buy you lunch.

My husband and I had chili and half sandwich, chicken. The sandwich was average. Chili had a season package in it and tasted a little less than average. I had ½ BLT. They said the sandwich had 4 slices of bacon so I assumed I would get two, not so. There was so much head lettuce I had to pull it out. My ½ salad had olives, tomatoes, cucumber, some carrots. I think what really turned me off was the dressing, just old Kraft also nothing but head lettuce. We waited at least 25 minutes, I asked for a refill on coffee didn’t come until we were ready to leave. There was no utensils on the table, had to ask. Maybe the hamburgers and hot dogs are better — won’t go back. This review is February 2013 and I think the new owner’s better regroup.

We’ve been to the Hoosegow several times and have always been satisfied. We usually stop in for chili dogs on our way to or from apple hill. Today was an exception. After waiting for an hour we decided to leave with empty stomachs. It’s perplexing, how long can chili dogs take to prepare?! Hot dogs need nothing more than warming, chili is pre-made so it also only needs warming. They come with chips, which also don’t entail any cooking. The staff explained that it got really busy so the kitchen got backed up. While we were there we saw around 10 people. At a place that serves mostly sandwiches and food that requires nothing more than assembly, waiting an hour is unacceptable.

Just remember what it is, a mom and pop coffee shop. Very rustic décor. Basic menu. Odd service. Food is pretty high quality. Bit tricky to find, could have used an extra sign in the shopping center.

Tucked in the back of the Raley’s parking lot… this place does not have the best location. That said, the food is great and the atmosphere is down home and friendly. We were served by the owners… it’s a true mom and pop establishment. I had the special of the day — an applewood smoked brisket sandwich with macaroni salad. The wife had one of their special sandwiches and a cup of the award winning chili — I got to taste both and two thumbs up! It’s a little on the spendy side, but you get big portions. It’s a nice place, parking is easy and the food is 1st rate.

My husband and I have eaten lunch at The Hoosegow twice now and both times it was excellent. The service is great and the owners are warm and friendly. They know how to take good care of their customers and make you feel right at home. Their Reuben sandwich is the best i’ve ever had and their salads are decent sized and very fresh. The Hoosegow Pale Ale on tap is also good! We highly recommend, you will not be disappointed!

We saw the Hoosegow featured on a Huell Howser California Gold show about Placerville. I didn’t have the address down and thought it might be located on main street. Thankfully someone at the visitor bureau directed us to the right location, on Placerville Drive about 2 exits west of town. The ambiance is very homey with appropriate bars between booths. The proprietor has won many chili cooking contests demonstrated by the numerous awards decorating the place. For those who think chili should have beans, you’re covered. For those who think chili has nothing to do with beans, you’re covered. As a nice sampler, you can get half a sandwich with either a cup($ 7) or bowl($ 8) of chili. The chili is tasty and the beans are just done. The heat is fairly mild. I’m no expert on chili but it’s a tasty bowl. It’s a good option for a lunch place in the Placerville area.
