All in all I think this buffet is one of the better ones around. My fiancé and I came for lunch and for dinner and the food was fresh regardless of time of day. Taste was good. Sushi was good, but the rolls need to be wrapped tighter as they tended to fall apart. Grill station was very good, the cook was polite, and food was done to perfection. Good dessert offerings including actual ice cream and a chocolate fountain. Décor is nice and everything was clean. Staff is nice, but it takes a little longer than I would like to get the check. At least they don’t rush you. Price is comparable or better, especially if you just order water to drink. We’ll definitely continue to frequent Hokkaido and hope that their quality holds up over time. I have always been a bit apprehensive about buffets so it’s nice to find one that doesn’t suck, since the fiancé LOVES Chinese food.

The smell of the restaurant is just awful and unappetizing. I am surprised they have decided to stay open and potentially get reviews like these and unhappy customers who won’t bother coming back. I hardly had five bites before calling it quits because of the smell. After talking to the manager we only had to pay for one of the two of us and you could tell we weren’t the first to say something. If they want to stay open during this issue they should at least apologize and be upfront with the customer and seat them away from the smell and assure them the food is prepared properly. It’s the unknown factor that makes it all far worse to have dinner there and I won’t be back.

Stopped by with a friend for dinner, average place good variety of offerings but food on the bland side, prime rib on the dry side, nothing outstanding about this place, prices are reasonable. Buffett was well attended.

Price is cheap. That was one of very few good things about this place. We got there close to noon, I thought they would have freshly cooked/made everything. There was a certain scent that I smelled from the restrooms to the walkway to the kitchen, so I’m sure it’s something that they clean the floors with, and it did not smell good. It smelled like a bathroom stall from a really dirty gas station that has not been cleaned for a while, so imagine that when you go to get food from the buffet and come back to your tables to smell that before you sit down. The floors were sticky and oily at the same time. The sushi rolls were okay, it falls apart when you pick it up from the buffet, plus a few of what I got, the avocado was already getting discolored. The two times I was at the sushi station no one was there, so you can tell that there were no fresh ones coming soon. No one was at the the noodle station either. There were not a lot of seafood choices unlike other buffets. The taste of food is just okay. Only dish that stood out was the prime rib, the taste was just right and it was very tender. The kids enjoyed the mac and cheese which was very cheesy and the chocolate fountain. It is a great idea to put the plastic«cage» around it, to prevent from things falling in. Also, they were discouraging us from using the online coupon using our phone in the future, they said we need to print it out. Really? Restrooms NEED to be cleaned badly. It looks so new, it’s shame. There were tissues everywhere and it stinks in there like someone had diarrhea and sprayed everywhere and visual evidence was cleaned but did not take care of the smell.

Went here tonight(2 adults 2 kids) for dinner because of curiosity and had a coupon. The chocolate fountain was a big selling point for the kids and fresh sushi for the adults. The place appeared clean upon entry. It was about 6pm and only about 20 – 25 people dining. We were sat close the food. There was a buffet for salad, three dessert buffets, four hot food buffets, assorted sushi in the back along with a Mongolian bbq setup. The sushi tasted old and some were very poorly rolled. The hot food was mediocre. Best options were crab Rangoon, dumplings, sesame chicken, and the beef roast(although they try to sell it as «tenderloin» — it is not). Desserts were typical china buffet fare and most were fresher than I’ve sampled other places. The chocolate fountain was a hit with the kids. Overall, the food appeared and tasted as though it had been sitting around for awhile. Not impressed. The worst part of the experience, and forgive my frankness, was the overwhelming smell of sewage towards the end of our meal. At first I thought somebody had passed gas near me, but the smell was strong and lingered until we left. Perhaps a plumbing problem in the restroom? I doubt I’ll return to find out.

Nice new Chinese buffet in Plainfield. Nice selection and food was fresh even for a late lunch. The Sushi selection was great. Many seafood selections including crawfish. Hand dipped ice creams instead of the normal soft serve. Would have liked to see more vegetable dishes and some dim sum dumplings but best selection in the area. Hope the quality does not drop. I’ll definitely be back.

This was seriously disappointing. Even in a city of ‘just-ok’ Asian buffets, this was consistently mediocre. The sushi seemed fresh, but ordinary, and the hot foods and desserts were down right bad. Won’t return.

Food was good but the whole place smelled like a dirty mop. If it smells like that when I try it again I’ll walk out and never go back.

We visited Hokkaido on the first week it was open, so maybe if we randomly decide to visit again the future, this review might improve? At the start, I’m not impressed. Aesthetically, Hokkaido is a beautiful Chinese buffet restaurant. If they can keep up with maintenance of the lighting(keeping it clean), and the water features, I will be impressed. Aesthetically, the food on the buffet looked great. The hot food offerings were similar to other Chinese buffet restaurants, & everything seemed clean(& new). Unfortunately, everything we tried was just«meh» even compared to other Chinese buffet restaurants around. It looks great, but seasoning/spice was just off, or it was lacking flavor in general. It was a bit of a disappointment. We didn’t try the sushi, because we don’t do buffet sushi, but it didn’t look like anything spectacular(& was a bit off in color). The price was decent, the food just wasn’t that good. The dessert bar has a chocolate fountain, and I personally think those are disgusting in a buffet setting(& in general). Yes, I want molten chocolate that I just watched a guy stick his finger in(Fact, that temperature of chocolate is not hot enough to kill bacteria most of the time. Ponder what could be growing in those fountains… incubating at perfect growing temperatures…). No Thank You. Overall, we’ll probably only be back if someone wants to meet there for dinner, or unless we decide to see how they’re doing 1-year in.

It is hard to find fresh vegetables at lunch, so I go to Chinese buffets a lot. This is one of the best I have ever found. The food is crazy fresh, the selection is impressive and the Sushi is a serious step above what you would normally find at a buffet. They even have a chocolate fountain! It is as if someone looked at all the other buffet places out there and said, «How can I make this better?» This place is the result!

It is a nice place, and much larger than I thought it would be when we walked in. It has new, inviting décor and comfy booths. Cost was $ 7.89 for lunch per person. Very good sushi(rolls, no sashimi) with lots of choices. I had eel/egg, tuna, spicy tuna(?), crab(imitation), and California rolls and a salmon hand roll. Also got some grilled veggies(quick!) and some other stuff(prime rib, pepper shrimp, grilled swai) off of the buffet. The prime rib was basically like pot roast but it went down just fine. Had a lot more stuff that we skipped(trying to cut a lot of sugar and all gluten out of my diet right now) that included most standard Chinese/international buffet fare and it all looked to be done well. Cannot speak to supper/weekend items(yet!) as being more expansive. I did notice a chocolate fountain with fresh fruit, and a freezer full of ice cream. Too bad for me and my diet. All-in-all, a closer option to the all-you-can-eat Sushi Club at 10th and Girl School, though with fewer choices, and favorable to the Chinese buffet already in Plainfield. We will be back, and soon! As for why only 4 stars out of 5, well 4 means«Yay! I’m a fan,» and I am. I save 5 stars to leave room for something truly mind-blowing. I reckon if there was a 4.5 star option I would give it. Go there and try it for yourself and you’ll be glad you did!

Brand new sushi /Japanese /American buffet place. 20 types of sushi, prime rib, salad bar, steak and… name it ! The prices here are so reasonable($ 8.00 for lunch buffet, dinner buffet $ 12.00) This place has no competition on the west side. Similar to Journey on the north side. I’m sure there will be some growing pains, and coupons are available. A gotta try!
