We host a Kentucky Derby party but because of lawn care concerns we took a year off. Some friends and I discussed going to Suffolk Downs, but there was no live racing on Derby Day(huh??), so he suggested Plainridge, which it turned out also didn’t have live races(seriously??), but we wanted to see what it was like so we hit it anyhow. Long story short, it makes Suffolk Downs look like the frigging Bellagio. But if you want to place a bet, it’s there, plus the beer is pretty cheap. The layout is rotten – they really couldn’t handle the Derby Day traffic, with lines for the bathroom, the bar, and the betting all running up against one another. Plus the flat screen tvs they have seem like the first generation of flat screen tvs. All that said, I’d definitely consider going back on a summer night to sit outside and catch some live races… esp. because it looks like they’re in the midst of an overhaul(I heat they’re likely going to get a slots license so I guess they’re giving the place a facelift).
