Hardcore, no frills, get-shit-done gym with friendly staff. I always train here when I’m in town. Highly recommended.

Face it. We’ve all had gym memberships at places where you’ve had to wait in line for a squat rack while someone is doing quarter squats and posting selfies between sets. These are the same places that play Katy Perry over the loudspeakers and deadlifting is frowned upon. This is not one of those places. The owners of Metroflex Gym of Plano, Ryan and Chris, are both experienced, knowledgeable, and most importantly, nice guys. They can help you with programming, nutrition and technique. Equipment-wise, they have multiple squat racks, deadlift platforms, log press, various barbells including specialty bars, dumbbells, farmer carry handles, prowlers, sleds, free weight based machines and cable machines, dip stations, climbing ropes, various tires. The only piece of equipment missing that I think is essential is a GHD but they do have an elitefts 45 degree back extension and reverse hyper. The first reviewer mentioned«minimal bathroom» and«beat up cardio machines». First of all, the only«cardio machines» are two treadmills that are meant to be used to warm up or cool down. They are not for cardio. Cardio is not done at this gym. Conditioning is and the conditioning machines are called prowlers, sleds, tires, sledgehammers, battle ropes, and high reps in the squat rack. As far as the bathroom goes, they have a men’s and women’s with toilets and sinks. What else do you need? A hair dryer? Sure, if you like the pampered life you could go to a luxury gym and pay up to $ 100 a month to have a spa and a locker room with naked dad bods walking around but if your serious about getting strong, Metroflex Gym of Plano has everything you need. I’ve been a member since March of 2015 and I can honestly say that the other members are not your typical gym goers. No one has been condescending. No one walks around with their nose up in the air like they are better than you. Everyone is there for the same reason(to get stronger) and for that, there is a mutual respect. I’ve seen some really strong guys offering help to newcomers on several occasions. Overall, I can’t recommended this place enough. Metroflex Gym of Plano is the best powerlifting gym north of Dallas!

Impressive hard core gym. Good to see a gym that specializes in weight lifting and real training.

I’ll preface this by saying that this gym isn’t for everyone, but it’s the one place I’ve actually gotten results. Why? Unlike a lot of commercial gyms, there’s a certain intensity in the air that makes it imperative to get your training in and get out. Generally rock or hip hop is played and the gym itself has garage doors that are opened through most of the year(and closed during the winter with the heater turned on). It’s a dramatic shift from what most are used to in most gyms, and it can take some getting used to. There is chalk for deadlifts. You are allowed to yell as loud as you want on lifts. I see all these things as positives. There’s a good mix of competitive bodybuilders, high school athletes, and«normal people» that train here, and it’s rare to see anyone screwing around. The few areas I have to complain about are the beat up cardio machines and minimal bathroom. These are in-line with the gym’s philosophy that a training ground should not be that comfortable. However, if there’s an area to nitpick, it’s these two areas. Whatever your training goals are, this is a good gym to go to if you don’t care about luxury items like a pool, juiced up locker room, or additional amenities, and your focus is solely on getting results.
