This is a mixed review. As a grocery store alone, Price Chopper is only a 3 and probably ranks near the bottom of my choices of places to buy groceries in Plattsburgh. The prices are high on many items. Corporate plays games with pricing specials. If you watch an item price, lets say, 16 – 20 frozen shrimp. The price one week will be 7.99 as a regular price. The next week it will be 11.99. The following week it will be 9.99 with a 2 dollar coupon. The next will be regular priced at 9.99. The next might be 9.99 as a special. No grocery chain I have ever shopped at plays games like this. While there may be seasonal changes in the price of shrimp, I’m sure they don’t go up and down in price like that. Taking advantage of these pricing games, and shopping just the sales, can save you a little money, if you don’t have to go out of your way to do it. Just doing your weekly shopping and buying everything here, whether on sale or not, will probably cost you more. Having gotten the negative part of my review out of the way, lets get to the positive. The people that work in all of the departments are great. If the review was based on them, it would be a 5. They are friendly and helpful. Most are very knowledgeable about their department. In particular, the seafood and foodfare(prepared foods) sections are the best. If you are looking for a great value in lunch place and not atmosphere, this is it. If you like fish, go to the seafood department and order a meal of your favorite seafood. It will be about ½ pound of seafood, taken right from the display case, fried, grilled or steamed to order with fries or onion rings, coleslaw and sauce. They often have seasonal specials. Currently they have a Tuesday special which you can find under ‘Weekly Meal Deals’ on their website. It changes weekly. Last week was cod, fries and coleslaw for $ 5. This week is catfish nuggets for $ 3. After getting your freshly cooked meal, take it to the foodfare area where they sell pizza and chicken to pay and get a soda cup for an additional $ 1.50. Sit down and enjoy, You can’t get a better value unless you are cooking it yourself. If you are an avid coupon shopper, you can also save with their double coupons up to $ 1. The Advantage card will potentially save you a little more on gas at some local stations, depending on how much you spend in groceries. I shop some sales when it is convenient and often get lunch there when I am in town.
